BUT YOU NEED TO LOOK AT AN IPHONE 8 AND NOT A PLUS TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE XR SCREEN IS GOING TO BE SOOOO BAD.
IT WILL BE GARBAGE AND LOOK LIKE A TFT DISPLAY FROM 2002.

I'll stop now... :D

Yup, 128GB for me too - and yellooowww! :)

It’s a small flaw that most people won’t care about and it will look great for sure, but it is there. Will it matter? For some, yes, for most it won’t.

I was on the fence myself about buying a XR vs a XS. I was pretty pleased with the screen of the iPhone 8 overall, but I do spend most of my time reading and I could tell the difference between the text on that screen and my S7 so I ended up going for the XS. I will still be recommending the XR as a very good option, but I have to be honest and point out that small difference, along with the lack of 3D Touch and telephoto lens. Those might matter to whoever I’ll be suggesting it to after all.

I thought no it was the LCD screen myself. The iPhone OLED didn’t impress me, not enough for the money.

That’s fair, Apple makes some fantastic LCDs after all! And the price difference is steep too, it can be hard to justify it. I hope you enjoy your XR when it comes, we’re getting closer to release date finally :)

Yeah, hopefully I’ll like the size, the Max is too big. I can use the Plus one handed just about, so hopefully the XR will be the same.

Only downside is I can see is I’ll have to go back to an Apple store to see all the different colours in person lol.

Because it suggests they don't know what the heck they are talking about, quite frankly.

I'm not saying it's garbage either. I'm just saying the Plus screens will still be be better, and noticeably so for some (but not all) people.

20-20 vision is average vision... for a 50-60 year old.

But it's moot anyway, since people who wear glasses will usually have 20-20 vision or even better than 20-20 vision.

In fact, it is very common for young adults and those with corrective lenses to have 20/15 vision, which is significantly better than 20/20 vision. Some may even have 20/13 vision, but that's more uncommon, and 20/10 vision is much less common.

Theoretically, perfect human vision is 20/5.

tl;dr:

20/20 vision is average visual acuity for a middle-aged to older person, with the expectation that someone who wears glasses or who is say 20 years old may have 20/15 vision, which is better than 20/20.

If you're looking for jagged edges, you'll likely not see them. What you'll see is font softness on small fonts. I can see these quite easily.

I can see this consistently with my 7 Plus over the SE or 8.

That's good for you, but not good for everyone. Just because you're fine with it doesn't mean everyone should be, especially when we're talking about a phone that costs $749 minimum.

BTW, I'm actually buying an XR for my wife. I'm just not foolish enough to expect that the text clarity on the XR will be on par with the higher pixel density iPhone screens.
Brilliant responses and summary, as usual.

It seems that those who can’t see a (big) difference will never acknowledge that many of us can.

Also, concerning value for price, 326 PPI for the Xr is unacceptable, IMO.

In contrast, 326 ppi is perfectly acceptable to me. And yes, I can tell the difference between 326 ppi displays & Plus/XS displays. Would I prefer higher pixel density? Sure. But I can live without it.

The XR is all about compromise. In order to hit that (significantly, imo) lower price point, something’s got to give. I’m willing to sacrifice some pixel density. Assuming the display is otherwise of decent quality, I think it’s a fair trade-off that I’ll quickly get used to.

That said, I understand those of you who can’t swallow this particular compromise. If I was used to 401 ppi (or whatever) then I’d probably have trouble with it too.

If I pulled out my credit card to pay for a 256GB Max, my vision would start getting blurry. :(

Well said.

Thank you for acknowledging the existence AND legitimacy of perspectives other than your own.

For me, lack of 3D touch is more of a limitation than the 326 ppi screen. The screen is going to be as good or better than Apple's other 326 ppi devices, that is excellent.

I couldn't wait for the XR, the XS Max wasn't really on my horizon until I saw one up close. For me it suits my requirements greatly - the 6.5" screen is a brilliant, roomy one, better for me than the 6.1 of the XR and I got to increase my internal storage to 256GB, a major upgrade from the 64 on my X which was beginning to be a tight squeeze.

I’ve got a 7, my gf has a 7 plus.

As soon as I look at her plus, I can tell it’s a better display - the icons look crisper and the photos look more detailed etc.

But others may not notice this as much.

The XR is a weird product - it’s been marketed as an upgrade for plus users, yet its screen will be 100 ppi less.

Will this bother plus users who are upgrading? Time will tell.

At any rate, it’s certainly a significant upgrade for any regular 4.7 inch iPhone users - if you have a 6, 6s, SE (or lower) and (maybe) the 7 and 8 you’re getting a big big upgrade.

Good video. Thanks for posting it.

You know, I had the 8 for exactly a year before I sold it. Not once did I notice that it's screen was worse than any of my friends' plus sized models. But its size, 4.7" was beginning to piss me off. Replying to threads on forums or any other type of keyboard input was becoming harder, partially due to my eyesight.

have usd iPhone 6s, 8Plus and XS max... i don't really notice the differences to be honest you'd have to be looking so close to find the nuances which by then is you overcomplicating your own issues... 326ppi is plenty sharp for many alrady, think about it... my monitor's 2560x1440p at 27 inch [105ppi].

that to me is plenty sharp even at an average distance of 60cm-1m viewing distance.

Yeah that’s the thing. I don’t think there is a straight ‘yes/no’ answer to the OP’s question.

Some coming from the Plus model will hate the screen and notice that it’s a downgrade immediately.

For others they won’t notice (or care) and enjoy the fact that they have a bigger screen etc.

We’ll all just have to see what it looks like in person.

I’d not be surprised that if the XR is a hit that we’ll see a new version next year with a 426 ppi screen.

Apple will have done their research - I think the phone will be a hit especially as there is a demarcation line between it and the iPhone XS/XS Max.

No, it’ll look fine. Probably great in fact.

It will be great. No need for the over priced Xs. The XR will more than adequately meet the needs of 80% of users looking for a 6”+ display. You’ll also have superior battery life to even the Xs Max.

Apple will hold off on getting the XR flowing in the supply chain as long as possible. Tim is a greedy SOB. :apple:

My problem is that I'll probably want an XR too when they come out...but I've got to keep that impulse buying mindset I have in check. My iPhone XS Max plus Honor phone is more than enough for me.
