I said it before and I'll say it again. The 1st gen stutters alot in OS 3. OS 4 would have killed usability.

Then 1st Gen iPhone will always be one of a kind. The only iPhone made of Al, the only one that is fully hackable at any point in time. Sure will miss those good days.

Also 3 years worth of updates are a mighty feat for Apple. I just wish Apple would make OS 4 for the 1st Gen to fix more bugs that to add the features.

The iPhone 3G is the same speed as the original iPhone. 3.0 stutters on the iPhone 3G too. Won't that make 4.0 unusable on the iPhone 3G? If so, then why would Apple allow that?

The 3G being same spec wise as the 1st Gen should also not get OS 4. However, Apple has to give it because of PR face.

Remember, the iPhone 3G was sold as a $99 option for this past year along with the 3GS. The 1st Gen however was never re-released as such option. Hence, if Apple cuts off 3G users, it will look bad because they just stopped supporting a recently sold phone. See where I'm going at?

1st Gens are no longer sold, and haven't been sold in 2 years, so they can get away with eliminating support for it.

Just for fun, I checked out your google search. I see that the comparisons being made are for internet connectivity. Network speed isn't the same as system speed.

What's with the 6/10?

I just put the link there so he could look for himself seeing as I had to give him everything. With a little in depth search we can find such examples. Also, the 6/10 is how of a succesful troll he is being. I rate it by post. That post had a trollig level of 6/10. The scale goes from -10/10 all the way to 10/10.

In fairness to all the original iPhone users out there, if someone could put the parts of my 3G S into the case of an original, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Phones and computers - 2 very different things.

Lets see, my iPhone has:
A CPU
A GPU
RAM
Long term storage (flash memory)
A full-color LCD display
WIFI
Bluetooth
And a somewhat crippled USB interface

In other words, it is more a computer than a telephone.

I am, however, starting to get the feeling that Apple thinks the way you do. That's fine if that is the way they want to run their business, but it precludes me from buying into the iPad, or buying into another round with the iPhone. Call me a whiner if you want, but I refuse to spend what little income I have on products from a company that engages in planned obsolescence that is so completely obvious. I can just see myself dropping $1300+ on a pair of iPads only to be told two years from now "Sorry, but even though the model after yours is basically identical except for GPS, a camera, and a new skin, we just couldn't find the money to repackage the OS for your specific model. But if you like you can buy the new version for $225! No sale? Well thanks anyway for your previous contribution to the tens of billions of dollars in profit we have made in the last few years."

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...

"fool you"? So apple told you they'd give the 2G not one, not two, but 3 major software updates? Oh, no? Well then you mist have assumed that was the case since bb, winmo, and palm devices have worked that way for years. Oh, no to that too?

Look, it's clear apple could put 4.0 on the 2G. And if you're annoyed that they're choosing not to, then fine. It's standard behavior for the smartphone market (has the G1 gotten even one major update? 1.5 was more like bug fixes, but even if you count that, does the G1 have 2.1? Will it get the next one?), but ok - be annoyed, and let apple know it by not buying another iPhone.

But don't tell me "they fooled you" as if they promised or even implied something and then reneged. I bought a first gen too (now have a 3gs too), and of they'd never even given us 2.0 we'd have nothing to complain about. We bought those phones with no promise of any os but what it shipped with, and I for one was happy to pay my $600 regardless. The fact that my original iPhone is now running 3.1 is pure gravy, and I'm damn well not entitled to 4.0. Sure, it'd be nice, and I'm well aware apple could do it if they wanted, but it'd be nice if garmin updated my gps' maps every year for free, too. But it's not what I paid for, and I'm not entitled to it.

as the iphones history dictates you get 2 full years full update support then one year 'limited' update support,if you buy the best version on the market (ie not buying the 3G when the 3GS is out), which in any respect is pretty decent

My Washer, Dryer, TV, Remote, Oven, Microwave, Dishwasher, Water Heater, HVAC Systems, Car and lots of other things all have the same stuff. Does that make them computers or does that mean they have similarity's to computers and that's where it ends? Everything electronic has - you guessed it - electronic components. Hell, even my vacuum has a control board.

Are you going to be all pissed when you find out you can't run the latest linux distro on your microwave? Maybe your washing machine might be able to do it instead?

If you have little money as it is, an iPhone is the LEAST of your worries. Let alone a data plan that goes along with it. Why are you even here? I love how people come here all whiny and then throw out the "I barely have money as it is" excuse.

DON'T BUY CRAP YOU CANT AFFORD. It's what's wrong with the world :)

Jailbreak!!!

Well .. i never jailbroken my iphone 3g and I wont since I am getting a new phone (4g or HD2 or Desire) but apple should let user decide to upgrade or not.

Actually, they are all computers. A computer is something that performs calculations autonomously. Now, the control board deals with binary digits to control certain aspects of the device. This is a calculation. However, each computer is specific or generalised.

Money, money, money, not all people live in America you know. Here in the UK, uni students have the worst situation when it comes to money, especially with tutor fees. For other people, money is inexcusable. Now, as a student, I can tell you what it's like - you are bound to certain perimeters which seem to be ever reducing in size. Some courses offer course material on the iPhone/iPod devices. Don't say get an iPod.

No, but manufactures improve them, and add features, if you want the new features you buy a new device, if you don't want to buy a new device then you have the old device with the set of features that you bought.

Still not sure how your iPhone is "obsolete" it will still work just like it does now.

One year after I bought my car they came out with a new one with more features, should the manufacture update my old car after all it's only a year old and it doesn't have the new features so it now obsolete?

Last I looked Apple is a business not a charity and they are in business to sell electronic devices, their business model isn't to make the lions share of their revenue selling you OS updates for $10 (which you probably think they should give you for nothing too).

Cry me a river, wait till you see how hard real life is when you leave your little sheltered school world. I call BS that the only devices to get your course work on are iPhones and iPods. If for some bizarre reason that is true and things are so tough for you do get a cheap iPod.

Finally some logic in this thread.

Thinking like this was long overdue in this thread.

It's not like we're asking for the impossible here.

Imagine this scenario for a moment. This is not fact. It's just a made up scenario for you to think about.

Let's say Apple releases an Intel Mac Mini Core 2 Duo in 2007 that has a 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

Then, in 2010, they release an Intel Mac Mini Core 2 Duo that has a 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 250GB hard drive.

They basically only upgraded the hard drive in these models (let's pretend).

Then Apple releases Mac OS X 10.6, but they state that you have to have a 2008 or newer Mac Mini for it to work and it absolutely will not install on any 2007 models. Would you feel needlessly left out then? Both machines would be the same speed, with the same processors, with the same RAM and same video cards.

Wouldn't you be upset that they cut off all 2007 computers even the ones with the same exact specs (with only minor differences)? I'd be pissed.

I understand this view point. But now take this into consideration:

1. Apple sold the 3G as a $99 option along with the more expensive 3GS.
2. Apple didn't do that when the 3G launched.
3. By selling the 3G, Apple guaranteed it's upgradeability for OS 4, because the phone was still under production.
4. If Apple cut support immediately for a phone they were just selling it would create a very hard backlash.

The 1st Gen is already 3 years old and has gone well beyond life expectancy in many senses. Also, Apple sells the phone hardware, not software. So by limiting the software to newer devices, they are encouraging users to upgrade.

Its not the impossible.
Maybe the JB community will have a solution for the 2G crowd after 4.0 is officially out.
Same way they enabled MMS on 2G iphones and other features not included on official firmware.
Complaining on the internet wont change a thing.
You like the new OS 4.0 or maybe the new iphone then go out and buy it. If not stay with what you have and be happy with it. When you first got it you never thought it would get any of the 4.0 OS features released 3 years later. Or did you? :D

This might be hard to implement seeing as how there will be no iPhone1,1_4.0.... OS being released. You'll need to make the OS of a newer iPhone model SGold 2 baseband aware because 4.0 would not carry the drivers to help the 1st Gen communicate to it's baseband. That and other 1st gen specific driver issues.

True, that would be a real pain.:D Im Gettin tired and not thinking clear at the moment :)
But maybe newer JB apps could take replace some 4.0 features.

True, but I think the Dev Team is very smart and I'm sure they could come up with a solution. They might even come up with a jailbreak that mixes pieces from 3.1.3 into 4.0 for the original iPhone. Who knows. Only time will tell.

Did anyone notice that this is the first iPhone OS that is not compatible with all devices?

You guys do realize that the 1st gen can generally only keep 1 3rd party app in the background. It's basically useless because of the anemic RAM. I realize that OS 4.0 doesn't keep the entire app running in the background as backgrounder does but I seriously doubt it would have the horsepower to deal with it. I'll be very surprised if the dev team gets it to work at all.

lol my digital watch is a computer.

I love all these convoluted arguments that don't prove anything or convince the logical people that a iPhone from 2007 deserves OS 4.0. Keep on truckin'!!!
