"Stealing" and "criminal" are just irrelevant labels meant to instill feelings of guilt and make people feel morally superior. I do it and you can call it or me whatever you want if it makes you happy. Has no affect on me (though depending on how unreasonably passionate or hostile you are in your judgement, it may cause me to perceive you as silly) I will continue to sleep well at night. Oh, and I occasionally exceed the speed limit and once took a pen home from work. My moral compass is my own and strangely I have no need to to explain it to anyone and certainly don't expect them to follow it.

lol BRAVO!!! Some rules are meant to be broken. Jesus did it. Einstein did it. Che did it. Even apple advises you to think differently from time to time. Learn from this man he speaks the truth.

By the way love mywi and the ipad when on the road. Match made in heaven.

Penguissimo, that was one of the funniest pieces I have read in a long time! I read the entire piece and the reread the entire piece out loud to my wife. Jesus that was good! Thanks for posting! :)

All of the ********s need to GTFO! I pay for 'unlimited' bandwidth and I'm going to use it limitlessly. I sleep fine at night knowing I 'steal' from AT&T. I'm a full time college student that works as well, I don't need to spend ten bucks on an app I know I can get for free, every dollar helps. The developer who built the app knew specifically that he was selling to the jail breaking community, he knew he was "illegally" selling his app. So when i download a craked Jailbroken app its like stealing weed from a drug dealer, is that illegal?

The first time I read it, I thought "OK, this is kind of interesting"...

...until I got to "And yes, in case you’re not following me, in that analogy, you, my friend, are the ****ing boat anchor", at which point I responded pretty much the same way you did ;)

When you purchased your iPhone you signed a CONTRACT. Part of that CONTRACT was that you would FOLLOW the terms of service included in that CONTRACT. You BROKE the CONTRACT.

Now, lets say you have the neighborhood kid cut your grass. You enter into a written contract and agree to pay the kid $500 a month to keep your yard in tip top shape for the summer as long as it didn't rain more than 5 days a week. It rains for 8 weeks every day. He shows up at the end of the month to collect his $500. You refuse to pay. He takes you to Small Claims Court. Who is going to win? He will. You tried to rob him. There was no agreement on the number of times he would mow the grass. Only that he would keep the yard in tip top shape as long as it didn't rain more than 5 days a week.

This is not a criminal violation it is a civil action but you are in violation of the CONTRACT and you are liable under the civil laws. When you violate these agreements will AT&T have you arrested? No, but they could cancel your service and I suspect avoid a requirement to port your phone number. You violated the CONTRACT which would absolve AT&T of their obligations.

You may justify your actions anyway you like but that is the fact. Ask a local lawyer if you don't believe me.

Now, what in reality what action will AT&T take? I expect nothing until bandwith becomes more costly, or customers like me who carry a data card @ $60 a month an addition to an iPhone begin to complain about the lack of bandwith. Then all bets are off. I suspect AT&T can tell the users who are abusing the iPhone data access. Butt the cash is most important to them right now.

Don't kid yourself you don't pay for unlimited bandwith. You pay for unlimited bandwith only for usage on an iPhone. The contract specifies this bandwith is specifically precluded from being used by tethering your phone to another device.

One last thing, is this theft? That is a bit more difficult. Theft is a criminal act and I don't believe there are statues which identify tethering and iPhone to a computer as a criminal act. But you are in violation of your CONTRACT and that is unethical and wrong. And, it leaves you vulnerable to civil action from AT&T.

I do not get a new power utility account when I add a toaster oven in my house..... So; I do not understand the logic of needing a new account for every device I'm using for the net.

It's stealing

Just like all criminals, they laugh at you and call you stupid.

"Ha, ha, Ha, your stupid for paying them for what I get free!"

Different terms of service. apples and oranges.

Does tethering the iPad even use more bandwidth than an iPhone? Its basically the same damn device, just has a bigger screen. I'm sure the ipads browser is coded exactly the same as the one on the iPhone. So, it doesn't really matter if I agreed to use only my iPhone to get data, I am only using my iPhone to fetch data, just displaying the data on a bigger screen.

Exactly what needs to be changed..... Loan Shark comes to mind:)

You entered the contract. You read and signed the contract which means you agreed with the contract. Welcome to the real world.

Now if you are unethical that is your issue. But I give you fair warning that is a very slippery slope. Once you begin to rationalize violating agreements you limit your ability to grow professionally. Employers and coworkers will figure it out.

The big problem today is everyone wants something for free. In my experience, you get what you pay for.

If you find a workaround then so be it, **** these teetotalers. AT&T is an ass raping monopoly who is subpar with I-devices. Theft requires removing something that is an original, not a clonable intangible quantity. Copying the Mona Lisa isn't theft. You haven't taken the original. I'm not saying it's legal, but certainly theft, no.

Only in this forum are people. Law experts. Ethic experts & responsible citizens that follow the system to a T.

NEWSFLASH!! That system was designed to benefit corporations NOT YOU!!!
If you can tether for what yo ualready pay for DO IT!! Is your pocket against theirs.

Last time i checked my pockets were not clocking in 4.3 billion in profit.
I already pay for internet so i AM TETHERING THAT **** until I cant.

Damn right it matters. You are violating the contract you signed which is unethical. Like it or not we live in a society where providers sell services and users pay for the services. There are rules you cut the corner here cut the corner there it is unethical. You don't like the terms of service, you shouldn't have signed the contract agreeing to them. End of story.

I was hungry so I went into the farmers field and took 5 ears of corn.
I was hungry so I knocked on the farmers door and ask if I could work to earn 5 ears of corn.

Understand the difference, be ethical take pride in your ethics. It will lead to success. No one can take away ethics and knowledge.

Who said I want something for free? I have been paying AT&T $200.- + a month for my family plan for the last 3 years.... plus $ 42.- a month for DSL (I need a static IP)

So, what do you think one should pay to get their email and browse around?
It's not like I browse on all my computers at the same time.....

So your one of the reasons why companies get away with raping its customers. STAND UP MAN! Ethics go both ways buddy.

They charge us 20 bucks extra for a few KBS of data they call text messages. And your fine with it? Maybe im just a ****ing rebel but if i find away to circumvent restrictions. I am making full use of that to my advantage. Specially when im dealing with an entity that is out to get as much as they can from me.

I pay 4 lines of service each with their own 3g connection. I pay for uverse & dsl. Thats like 400 bucks a month. But to some of you im stealing because i am tethering a connection I am paying for monthly? Are you serious lol

The definition of stealing is warped. Is like apple saying to us ALL!! we are terrorist for jailbreaking hahaha.

First, YOU DID NOT PAY FOR IT.

Why are you so special? Why don't the rules apply for you? Are you an anarchist who believes in no rules. Or does cheat, lie, and steal just work for you?

Is no one as good as their word anymore?

What do you mean I did not pay for it? I pay 30 bucks monthly for UNLIMITED access. All im doing is sharing that connection with my other device. I am still within unlimited.

So how did I NOT PAY FOR IT?

That's a good point.

But, I read my contract. I knew what I was agreeing to. I hold up my end of the agreement. If I didn't like it I could have tried to negotiate or gone with Sprint or Verizon. Now, I had a problem with AT&T about a week ago. they did me wrong on a service issue with a data card. They know I am pissed. They know my business is at risk. But they know I pay my bills on time and don't cheat them. They are working to repair the situation. Already I have a direct line to the senior tech as a result of this.

You feel they are being unfair. That is your right. But because you feel they are being unfair it does not justify being unethical and violating the contract You signed. They didn't hold a gun to your head. You wanted the hot iPhone when you bought it you agreed. They charge. That is how business works.

Did any of you read the terms of service? It is NOT UNLIMITED ACCESS. It specifically does not allow tethering of other devices.

You paid for unlimited access via the iPhone only.

Oh boo freaking hoo at the "your using more bandwidth that's stealing." Bandwidth comes from machines, thoughtless and emotionless boxes that do nothing but process and distribute data. The fact your taking your "unlimited" access and re-routing it to another device is not stealing it's called resourceful-ness. That's just like me using my palm per plus from Verizon and using mobile hotspot app on the device. I pay $15 bucks a month for my agent data plan and they don't seem to have problem with me routing my bandwidth to 5 devices.

I gotta go to bed.

It is a free country. If you don't like the AT&T terms of service. Take your business to another provider. But act ethically for your own soul.

If you have kids, do you teach your kids to cheat at school? Did your parents teach you to cheat at school?

Think about this. I am not here trying to argue. One problem we have today is a lack of ethics in business and our personal life. That needs to change for all of us.
