Is Your iPhone 6 Defective In Any Way?

These are the things I have encountered on iPhones ranging from 3G to 6+. I am 99% sure that there is at least one on yours, but it's a good thing if you can't find something wrong or do not consider some of the following as a defect. I wouldn't call everything a defect, as it is a personal preference for some.

- dead pixel
- backlight bleed
- uniformity (one side darker, yellower)
- smudge / smear inside glass
- dust inside screen
- dust or dirt inside glass (outside of screen area)
- recessed / uneven volume button (on one but not another)
- sticky vibration button (normal ones have a nice firm click)
- uneven pressure / sticky / unbalance on sleep wake button (normal ones have a nice click to it)
- uneven home button pressure (perfect ones have a nice click to it, but this is personal preference)
- uneven gap when assembled (run your finger on the edge on each side and compare for your 6/6+)
- dust inside camera lens
- general cosmetic scratches / chips / dings (Apple logo, aluminum, buttons, sim slot)

And this list hasn't even covered technical issues like wifi, Bluetooth, Touch ID, vibration rattle, etc.

But if you can't find anything wrong, be grateful because ignorance is truly a bliss. I envy you!

Omg the light bleeding from my freaking mute button attracted a gnat and it crawled under the screen!

The Week 38 4.7" 6 I received appears to have a perfect home button, vibration switch, on/off switch, and aluminum finish. The display is nearly perfect, with what appears to be some ever so slight yellowing near the very top edge of the display. It's so minor that my friend couldn't see it, and is probably the most uniform IPS LCD display I've closely inspected in a long time. It's uniform enough that I'm quite sure it'd be an A+ rated panel.

I'm somewhat hesitant to switch to a 6 Plus because the likelihood of getting a sample this good again is pretty low.

I started with a "perfect" 6 but ended up with a dead pixel after 4 days, the replacement unit had dirt smudges on it including a black hair between the metal and screen, light bleed out of the mute switch, and a screen with yellow at the top and cool white at the bottom. The second replacement I got has a very slightly yellower left and the home button feels loose if you turn the phone upside down and tap on it, it also has the spotlighting effect at the top of the screen...

Here are my defects:

First had a big red stuck pixel right in the middle, incredibly annoying because it showed up everywhere.
Second phone was ok but had a long scratch on the display right out of the box. (If I were picky I'd also mention that the home button is incredibly mushy but I'm fine with that)
Today I got my third phone and this one is fine except for completely broken backlight that doesn't go below like 40% brightness for one half of the screen while it fully dims the other half. So the image is split in two brightness-wise in most use cases. Also it goes nuts and flickers if you wake it up from sleep.

The second one is what I would consider a fine acceptable phone if it weren't for the scratch. Hope my next replacement is one of those again, at this point I'm in too deep in this exchange lottery to accept a dead pixel phone or similar.

6+, today noticed a white speck, like a plastic fleck inside the back camera. It's not in photos and I can't seem to budge it from tapping or shaking. Annoying as to look at though.

Would it warrant a replacement? I have AC+.

The only thing I have noticed so far after getting my 6 a day after launch is that the inscribed Apple information on the back is wonky.

Be sure that you can't put up with it. If everything else is good the odds on you getting a perfect one again are by no means sure.

I have noticed some weird discoloration and flickering on my iPhone 6. Specifically on the left side the gray color looks off and it flickers in and out when I rotate my phone.

I'm not sure if this is a software issue or a screen defect. I haven't been able to find anyone else with this issue and i've already tried a fresh restore running 8.0.2

I returned my 6+ 64G after 13 days largely due to poor call quality from the earpiece.

I think I will wait a couple of months to see where the chips fall with this phone before trying another.

My iPhone 6 had dust under the screen, and a loose vibrator switch. I sent it back. Not worth the $900 I paid for a minimal upgrade with a laggy os.

Safari is just showing your home screen wallpaper blurred behind the Shared Links sidebar (if that's what you are talking about in your screenshot). I also notice a very slight flicker when rotating from landscape to portrait.

wow you are absolutely correct. I would have never thought they would make that slightly transparent. It was driving me crazy! Thanks!

My 16-year-old son traded in his 4 for a 6 the day after it launched. We have Verizon so this was free. A little bit of background: my husband and I, and both of our teenagers, all have iPhones-- 4 or 4S (prior to son getting the 6), ranging from 1-3 years old. None had ever been damaged.

Less than two weeks after my son got his 6, he was moving to sit down when it slipped out of the pocket of his sweatpants. Hit the sidewalk, and the screen was completely smashed-- from a height of about 2.5 feet. Not only that, but it flipped when it hit and the camera on the opposite side smashed as well. It looked like it had been run over by a tank. I realize some people might say "your kid is lying to you, he dropped it from a window" or something, but take it or leave it, I believe him. His phone is like Gollum's "my precious," and he wouldn't do anything idiotic with it.

Except not put it in a case. When he got the phone I told him that if he elected not to get a case for it, he would be on the hook to pay for it (insurance deductible) if it broke. He sent me six links to articles showing the phone was nearly indestructible, super-strong Sapphire glass, etc. Honestly, I was almost sold on the idea myself. I thought, hey, maybe Apple is sort of building the case into the phone now. Maybe it's almost redundant.

Yeah, not at all. With his previous iPhone 4 he didn't keep it in a case and dropped it numerous times and it never even got a scratch. With the 6, one drop and it caused catastrophic damage. Not all falls are equal, of course, but I was amazed at how destroyed it was. I was posting on Facebook about it, and another friend with a teenager said her kid's 6 had gotten a smashed screen within the first week. When I brought it into the Apple Store I told them it had to be defective when manufactured because that couldn't possibly be the quality Apple designed. The woman working there was nice enough to charge us "only" the $109 they charge right now to replace the screen, even though the whole device had to be replaced. That was decent of her, but I still feel really burned that Apple made all these claims about super-strong new glass etc and the phone is, in fact, incredibly fragile.

I had been holding off on upgrading my 4 until I could get the 6, but now I am pretty sure I am going to get a 5S instead. For one thing, I feel like I need to hang on to my 4 as a backup phone for when the 6 gets broken again, and for another, I can't have a phone that delicate-- judging not just by my kid's experience but based on the research I did on this problem after it happened to us. It's a bummer. I'm disappointed that Apple keeps insisting these problems are rare or user error when it looks suspiciously like the phone glass and casing are cheaply made or subject to poor quality control.

I just received my 128gb space grey iPhone 6 and...

  • Loose mute toggle button when it's muted but stays firm when it's flipped up - Will this be a problem in the future? Or should I just keep it as it is? Never owned an iPhone so I don't know how previous gen held up with loose buttons like this.
  • Touch sensitivity is bad, I can't type any letters on the edge for example the letter Q or P without placing my thumb to the letters beside it. Both the vertical left and right side of the screen, the edge of it doesn't respond to the touch (I even downloaded a free paint app and I can't fill the edges with color) but the top and bottom seems to be fine.
  • Not sure if this is a defect but on the back where the flash is located, the bottom half of the circle is orange instead of the typical yellowish tint? And when I toggle flashlight it is surprisingly weak  Thought this was odd as my galaxy S3 flash was rather bright.
  • Not sure if this is a defect either but coming from an old galaxy s3 phone, the default camera app for the iphone 6 has that sluggish/lagg like feel when trying to take photos where as the s3 didn't have this and was just buttery smooth (when I toggle the camera to video, it goes all buttery smooth just like the camera for the s3). I'm guessing this is normal? I mean it's a smartphone cam so I'm not too worried since it's not a dslr camera.
  • The home button slightly moves around but I have to rest my thumb on it and give it a slight force to move it around in a circular motion. It only has the tactile click when I press it right in the middle, the outer edges of the home button doesn't have a clicky feel to it and rather soft. Also feels like the button is somewhat sunken into the phone as the edges are sharp - again not sure if this will be a problem in the future? I've had people where the button stops working, would this be one of the reasons why?
  • Last one would be that I feel my hair getting stuck as I am using the phone as a phone

Other than the phone seems to be functional at the very least? Off topic but I miss my old led notifications haha, I thought the iPhone had one.

I would have Apple check out the touchscreen issue, that should not happen.

My mute button has a very slight wobble. The LED is a dual-LED "True Tone" flash so that is fine. Your camera might feel laggy when using the flash since it is taking a reading to balance the color of the flash. Without the flash, the camera should be very fast (especially when holding the shutter button). My Home button sounds the same as yours.

Really the only real problem it sounds like is your touchscreen.

Thanks for the help :) oddly enough the print on the back is quite noticeably off lined which doesn't bother me because who looks at the back of their phone anyways.

As for the touchscreen maybe it's because when I'm typing I'm hitting edge of the screen where there are no touch sensors (bezel). I guess for size half of my thumbnail is coming in from the side. If that makes sense... Should I avoid updating so I can exchange or does that not matter? If it's related to software then I could give it a shot. I already tried reset and erase all data.

Just noticed that the glass isn't completely flush above the headphone jack on my 6+. If you look, there's a clear black line where the slight gap is. You can even push it down and it goes away. Not a huge deal - you have to look for it to see it. But should I exchange it anyway? Or just live with it?

This is the 5th iPhone I've had, but the first one with a defect. Not sure what to do!

I kind of have this issue on my 6, when I squeeze the bottom left corner of the screen between my thumb and forefinger, there is very slight movement. The left bottom doesn't have this movement. For now I'm going to live with it until it gets worse. Others have reported this issue as well in this thread.

got a plus. phone is not true. when laid flat on screen side down, the phone teeters. tried multiple surfaces.

Others have reported the off-centered text on the back too. I havent heard of any widespread touch screen issues though, so I'm not sure if you're just typing weird or what. :p There shouldn't be any problem doing an iOS update.

Does it have anything to do with the protruding camera lens? ;-)
