How does under the display finger print scanner work with gloves on? I would never give up Face ID for this reason alone.

Everyone is different. But I really fail to see how someone could have any serious trouble with the 5 or so gestures necessary to use the phone. I am sure there are some other less obvious gestures, but I am not speaking of those. To go home, swipe up. Really not that hard :)

Face ID takes a lot of credit for the new iPhones, and rightfully so, but gesture controls it so intuitive and seamless to use, that to me, is the real key winner for the new UI iPhone experience without the home button. It’s very quick and it’s intuitive, and performs so fluid.

I guess it doesn’t work but I think those phones also have facial recognition.
I can’t see Apple ever implementing both. What I could maybe see them doing is providing an option to turn off the swipe up to get to home screen so when Face ID unlocks it takes you directly to the home screen. Not sure how lock screen notifications would work in that scenario.

I was thinking this the other day. The real feat for the iPhone X imo were the guesture controls not the new design.

Probably the same way FaceID does with a full face balaclava.

I’ve found that as long as ones balaclava is thin and your eyes and mouth are exposed, FaceID can work.

However, I use a balaclava and helmet for when I paraglide in cold weather or for skiing. For this setup I’ve just added a FaceID “Alternative Appearance”. Works perfectly.

With the right balaclava and the right gloves I think perhaps we can all access our iPhones. It’s not a big deal and I was poking a little fun.

Here are some reasons why people go for iphone though its expensive!

‘Better’ is always subjective. Is the Note 9 a good device, I think it is. But one thing Samsung doesn’t have that Apple does and that I value more than even Apples ecosystem, is there security with iOS, that’s a crucial feature of why I retain my loyalty with Apple.

With you on this. It is one of my main reasons to be on iOS.

The screen is a lot better on the note 9
The build quality is better on the note 9
The S -pen
The speakers are superior on the note 9
Always on display
Water resistance
Dex
Compatible with gear VR and daydream
Iris scanner
Better range of accessories
Wireless charging
Mobile payments (google and Samsung Pay)
Support

Definitely worth the extra money imo. Also the note 9 is significantly cheaper than the Xs max where I live.

Had both of these, kept iPhone

The screen is a lot better on the note 9 - Agreed, but no too much. Sam makes the iPhones screen in most cases I believe. It's different calibration, one is eye candy and the other is more true to life.

The build quality is better on the note 9 - Im going with meh on this one - Draw

The S -pen - Great, if you use it. I couldn't find the need. Only once in a while.

The speakers are superior on the note 9 - Same for me, or leaning towards iPhone

Always on display - Great option, love this

Water resistance - Same

Dex - Definitely cool, but again there was never any need other than to check it out to use it.

Compatible with gear VR and daydream - Definitely cool

Iris scanner - I liked it, but it was slow and inconsistent. Even the smart unlock or whatever they call it, face and iris combined. Finger print was my go to

Better range of accessories - Draw

Wireless charging - Same

Mobile payments (google and Samsung Pay) - Samsung pay does kick major A$$! I had a gear s3 linked up as well. I shocked people with this almost daily by paying with the watch at locations that do not support these type of payments

Support - This is just a no go. Apple support is second to none in the smartphone world.

I'll admit, I do switch back and forth often. But I always end up back on iOS. I love what the Android oem's do with hardware, there are some awesome smart phones out there, but even with android pie it cant hang in a few areas with iOS. Efficiency is certainly one that comes to mind first. My iPhone has under a 3000 mah battery, the Note has a 4000 mah. I use the phones exactly the same way everyday, most of the days the iPhone is winning the battery battle. The other issue i had with android is all the notifications about where you were and places you've visited. I know this can be shut off but it sucks! Then random crap all the time. I spent more time swiping away crap then anything else. The last selling point for me is privacy, im sure we are all getting screwed somehow, but it seems we are getting it a little less with Apple. The OS is made here in the states, so isnt Android, but Android is open source and OEM can do basically whatever they want with it (Huawei) cough cough. But in the end I'm glad we have choices, this keeps us moving forward.

In this battery test the Mate 20 Pro lasts 7hrs 44 minutes compared to 6hrs 56 minutes with the XS Max, yet the battery is 1000mAh larger.

So yes when you have a battery that is 33% larger yet offers only 12% improvement in battery life, you need to advertise "supercharging" (branding copied from Tesla), which if you use every day will destroy that battery over time.

The real win is in the standby time! it's not even close. I'm amazed at the battery life on my X.

Sorry I was comparing the note 9 to the pocophone, not the Xs max.

Personally I just love the 'lack of bezels (As much as possible) design. I replaced most of my monitors with one that have ultra small bezels...

If I ever upgrade to something else, it would probably be something like one of those Samsung foldable phones

I don’t know, i think apple is grasping for straws and it’s a lesson for them to take into next year’s release. Make the pricing like the XR and don’t skimp on the features and the demand will be high again. I have a X and didn’t see the worth of upgrading to the XS due to the lack of features that warrant an upgrade, and with it being the same price there’s no way I would’ve. Now if it was $899 I would’ve. If the pricing will keep going up, then my next phone will be the XR.

I’m not sure I think Apple ‘skimped’ on any features for the XS, as it was exactly what it was meant to be, an ‘S’ lateral grade more Than it was a [Up]Grade (And Apple is notorious for rationing features from year to year). I do expect the 2019 XS to be more more camera focused with the ‘Triple lens’ to debut.

Regarding the price points, hopefully they remain at/or below what we have been seeing with this onward trend of price increases, which the XR as you said, will be the More predominant model for most upgrading in the future.

They probably knew they would eventually go too far but how would they ever know until they tried and failed? Hopefully next year there will be lower prices and better value.

It’s a valid theory. Apple tried and succeeded with the iPhone X. This year they tried again and apparently failed. Maybe the amount of people willing to go $1000 bucks for a phone is limited.

For me, the iPhone XR is already an acknowledgement of such discrepancy between price and demand. At $749, I’m certain that it will be sold for $649 next year. It is already a good value but it will be a great value next year.

The top of the line will come down in price. Apple may opt to continue selling the XS next year for $849 or $899. The new iPhone (whatever they name it) will take yet again the $999 price point but with a far better camera system and maybe more memory/storage to justify the price.

I consider the iPhone XR at $799 for 128Gb version a great price vs the 2016 iPhone 7 Plus at $749 for 32Gb.

This whole who has the best at $1,000 and above is craziness. I still buy a previous generation iPhone for a reason. It’s a damn phone. I would go elsewhere except I own a lot of ITunes music, movies and applications. It’s worth sticking around for that reason. IPhone 7 128 is new to me as in a month ago. Matte black and model that’s not as prone to no service issues. It’s great!

I can’t see Apple making huge enough changes to justify increasing the sticker price next year. But I also cannot seeing Apple getting too aggressive with price cuts and dropping prices enough to encourage customers to buy the 2018 iPhones.

I know that I won’t buy an iPhone my next go around because it will probably be too expensive and not enough changes compared to my current device.
