Well, it would be similar to the movie studios not wanting iTunes to allow for the ripping of DVDs lest they stop selling movies on iTunes. The two (DVD purchases and ITS content) seem to have nothing to do with each other, but to paranoid content provider they do.

Basically, the labels didn't want Apple to get clever and do something to circumvent the ringtone profit stream. Remember: the ITS deals were hammered before the iPhone was a glimmer in Jobs's eye: I'm sure he didn't care about ringtones back then.

Too true. That also annoys me, that I have to buy a DVD of a movie to play it on my TV then buy the exact same movie again (for a similar price) to play it in iTunes/my iPod/TV (via apple TV). Or it would if I lived in the US, but since I live in the UK I can't buy ANY movies or TV shows on the iTMS. Which renders most of Apple's products (video iPod, Apple TV and iPhone) largely useless.

Like I said, it's no wonder people pirate. Heck, in the UK it's the only way to get content on the Apple TV. Why bother selling it at all?

So people who have purchased ring tones for their previous phones can't use them for the iPhone?

They have to pay again?

ooooh, any predictions about the iMac and Mini? :p

hahaha, if you MUST know... The iMac will become the first convertable desktop/portable. The Mini will die, because Apple hates inexpensive computers. It will be replaced by another slightly more expensive, but slightly more powerful desktop model. It will be Apple's answer to the "Mid-Range Tower" lot but will likely not be a complete solution (not very expandable/upgradable?) because Apple hates giving people what they want.

And while I'm at it, Apple will release a slightly-more-portable MBP with a 13" LED s

I keep seeing people talk about music they "bought" and songs they "own" etc etc.. but the point is, unless you created the music from scratch, you DON'T own it, and you didn't buy the MUSIC. So yes, the owners of the rights to the music CAN say "no" to your (legally) using it as a ringtone. And the argument that if it were illegal, no other companies would make it possible is also baseless. Being able to do something clearly does not reflect its legality... and what is legal in one place is not legal in another. As the iPhone becomes available in more jurisdictions, all these things might change.

and we've got the old look website :)

80 is for one line, but a family plan requires at least 2, so 80 + 30 = 110.

Apple's listing is slightly misleading, but note the fine print mentions this.

OK, OK, I see now, they are quoting for two iPhones.

I assume if one iPhone and one regular phone are used, the price would go down about $20.00 from there.

I got so excited when I saw that, I had forgotten to fully read!!!

Thanks so much for the clarification, as I was thinking it was no longer a palatable deal.:D

not really. i can play the music i buy on cd at home, in my car, or i can use a bit of it as a ringtone. all perfectly legally.

It's still gonna cost me a buck to put the MP3 I recorded of me saying "iPhone ringtones suck ass" on my iPhone. That I most certainly DO own.

This is DRM gone crazy.

And how can it be a copyright issue if other phones can do it? If it's illegal then no phone would do it.
You can rip and burn non-protected commercial CDs and distribute them with your computer, and you can make a video of a movie showing in your local theater using an HD video recorder, but the fact that you can do these things does not make it legal to do so.

Get a grip people. No details have been announced, yet. You don't know whether there is another way to upload your own ringtone.

BTW, coming up with your own ringtone is easy for me, but it still requires more than a few steps on my RAZR. (Change start and stop time, set to mono, reduce bitrate, start Bluetooth interface to RAZR, answer questions etc.) Maybe this is a service for those who would not want to deal with the headache.

actually having thought about it again, i don't think i can copy a bit of one my cds onto my phone as a ringtone legally.

Requirements

I'm dying laughing at the Windows System Requirements on the updated tech specs page at apple.com.

Home, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate, Professional, Service Pack 2....:p

Also there appears to be a new item in the source list with an orange icon?

Anyone know what thats for?

Biggest joke ever

Talk about raping your bank dry. seriously people, with normal smartphones you don't have to pay money for a ringtone. that's only with cheesy $99 phones. I had customizable ringtones on my 6035 smartphone over 6 years ago.

there is no excuse for this. it's my song, my whatever, if I want to convert it to be on my phone, that should even be an argument.

STUPID! Just use songs!

This is STUPID! Just allow us to use any songs (mp4/aac, mp3, whatever) we have on the phone!

Is Apple getting greedy?

iTunes ringtones

Do I have to pay royalties, if somebody hears my ringtone?

Ok...umm...Reality Adjustment time :)

How did you people make the jump from: "It appears that Apple will be selling ringtones"

To: "APPLE IS RIPPING US OFF BY NOT ALLOWING US TO USE OUR OWN STUFF AS RINGTONES!?!?! AAAYYEEEAAAAAAAAAA *boing* *boing* *boing*"

You realize you sound like total paranoid nutjobs, ne?

Let's see...by your (chuckle) "logic" iPods can only play music bought from the iTMS. But we all know that's not the case, huh?

Just wanted to throw that lifeline out there in case someone wanted to catch it and come on back from the precipice of insanity...

Just wait for next week.

I would say just wait probaby by next week somone would dismantal and iPhone, Hook the drive up to the computer mount it, see where ringtones are located and does some tricks so you can do it easier. I expect a lot of cool hacks for the iPhone in the short future.
