They aren't getting them because they are rich. They are getting them because they are celebrities. As it is, most celebrities happen to have money.

What would the advertisement value of giving you a watch now? ZERO.

Actually word of mouth is advertising enough. Apple can't even handle all of the orders. I could see if no one knew about it. Apple doesn't need to give celebrity's watches to get the public to buy them.

Personally, I only care if the display is on when *I* need/want to use it.

Otherwise, I don't care.

Just like I don't care if the light in the fridge is on when the door is closed.

You either have a strong arm or a tiny fridge.;)

Seriously, as the fashion accessory Apple is marketing the watch to be, the blank black face looks pretty bad. It they were marketing it as a smartwatch or tech gadget then I could understand. I mean, after all, it's the most personal device...

Why does Apple keep giving multi million celebs expensive watches while the common folk struggle to pay for their low end sport edition.

Apple is a business, they don't care if the common folk can't pay for the low end edition.

I disagree, I love how the Apple Watch looks when is off.

Yes they do.

Not to be that guy but I'm going to be that guy.

Why is it that rich people get the watch early for free and yet customers have to purchase it and then wait? It reminds me of the tax system of the USA.

I'm just saying I want the watch now too. :)

Because it's amazing marketing for apple

Because people will want the watch because JJ is wearing it

Because people will post about it on forums

Because it also markets for star wars, so they're benefiting each other

etc

etc

etc

That's a statistic that's meant to give false impressions.

The top 20% make 52% of the money. So, they SHOULD pay a higher percentage BECAUSE they make a higher percentage.

If the top 20% only made 20% of the money, then it's a legit statistic, but it's not.

My point is only in regards to the discussion we're having in this forum– there is no correlation between the US tax system and rich celebrities getting free Apple Watches.

I can see not thinking it's a big deal in the looks department, but what exactly do you love about it? It's a giant black chunk on your wrist, like a shrunken monolith from 2001 slapped on a bracelet. I think that's where this completely differs from the traditional watch/bracelet as far as fashion is concerned.

If they can make sports bands in other colors (this being a navy example), and they're going to promote them on celebs, why not make those other colors available to everyone? If this marketing ploy works, might it be because I want a navy sport watch like Abrams, not merely an Apple Watch like Abrams?

But really, I just want better color options for their phones and watches. Actual red (not that salmon nonsense), navy, dark green, even brown.. why must it be dark gray, white/silver, tacky champagne, or pastel neons? Why can't we have good old standard colors as choices?

(yellow 5C owner here, but that's cause it was the least pastel of the color choices - and there was no black 5C).

forgive me if someone else asked this, but why isnt his watch on when he's speaking? i thought it activated when u raise ur wrist...

I'm starting to wonder about the choice to save the $200 on the sport. Stainless with dark blue looks pretty nice. I guess I will keep that in mind for next year.

and he was also using an iphone 6, i guess it was the plus one, and put it inside his pocket.....

people - the reason Apple gives them devices pre-launch is for the publicity it generates. eg, we're talking about it right now.

It's only publicity for Macrumors and other forums' visitors. This is not getting out to CNN, Forbes, or other mainstream outlets. Has TMZ done a segment on Apple Watch sightings?

I love how the screen looks completely black and not some kind of gray, it looks really cool to me.

I think it's just a matter of time before there will be some sort of low-power mode, with a very faint face watch constantly showing up. Right now, I think they are trying to save every bit of battery as they can.

Screw the watch, I want to know what brand undergarments he wears! What are the labels on his socks! WE MUST KNOW THESE THINGS!!

But is getting out to all the people that watched Star Wars VII stream, that's how we found out about it!

It doesn't look pretty bad. It just looks pretty blank.

Early Pulsar LED digital watches were blank until you pushed a button. The first model sold for the equivalent in today's dollars of over $12,000.

Maybe we'll see some Apple Watches in the new Star Wars film...

These are more then likely free gifts to these celebrities. Companies use celebrities all the time to market their products. Seeing a celebrity with something many times causes others to go out and buy it. Abrams is worth around $95 million so after the interview he probably went back to his $100,000 custom watch.

Wouldn't bet on that.

People who care about trends based on what celebrities are doing pay attention to things like this. They think "ooo, what shoes are those? I want a pair." I dare you to go on the Facebook page for Kathie Lee and Hoda on the Today show. Every single day multiple women ask "where can I get KLG's dress?" "what color nail polish is Hoda wearing today?", "what was that skin cream you talked about today and where can I buy it?". People, especially women, do this all the time and that's why companies gift visible people with products they was to create a buzz about.

Now imagine being an employee and seeing people get them for free #

Apple Watch edition: free to those who can afford it. Expensive to those who can't.
