Not to be that guy but I'm going to be that guy.

Why is it that rich people get the watch early for free and yet customers have to purchase it and then wait? It reminds me of the tax system of the USA.

I'm just saying I want the watch now too. :)

Because watches are accessories, accessories are fashion, and fashion runs off of celebrity endorsements.

So is Macrumors going to make a post every time a celebrity is seen wearing an iWatch?

i was wondering the same thing. maybe they will start showing pictures of everyone ever seen wearing an apple watch. "joe nobody was seen wearing an apple watch during his shift as a bank teller at the local wells fargo branch in scranton, PA. he received his apple watch as a gift from apple in the mail 6 weeks after it was available on April 24 in exchange for $399 - it is unknown if he paid cash or credit"..

Why do you care what other people see on your watch? Do you actually think it says something important about you?
He didn't say he cared what other people saw on his watch. He cares what he sees on other people's watches.

He's right about it being a matter of opinion. No one who thinks the blank face detracts from the clean lines, or beautiful band is objectively wrong (or objectively right, either).

People got accustomed to seeing blank-faced watches in the 1970s when LED digital watches were fashionable, and some who were put off by them at first grew to like them (while others never did).

People who find the blank face of an Apple Watch (or other smart watch) at rest disturbing will in some cases come around.

Looks like a blue sports band to me.

I'm pretty sure it's actually a black band. The blue background is just playing games with the camera.

I'm getting real sick of seeing these celebs with their free and early Apple Watches. It's a real douchebag move on Apple's part. The watch is clearly selling fine without giving away free and early watches.

You know what, I was just thinking exactly the same.

Am my feeling have ZERO to do with the fact they are probably getting a free watch, that's irrelevant, it's that it's just a really weak tactic to try and artificially promote a product.

And, personally, SHOUTS of a utter lack of confidence in your own product.

It's a kind of desperate tactic someone would try and use if they have a weak product that they know can't stand on it's own without gimmicky efforts like this to try and make something weak, seem the thing to have.

Personally I think Apple are better than this, and don't need to resort to this type of tactic to sell their products.

I feel they are strong enough to stand on their own.

In fact, I would feel insulted.

Hey, we don't have any watches ready yet to give to our long standing loyal Apple customers. But look at all the so called celebs with them we've handed out.
You know what, this actually pisses me off at Apple for treating loyal PAYING customers like this.

:(

It's called marketing and advertising. I think when you're practically creating a new category out of thin air (the only person I know who has a smartwatch has a free review unit for his publication), seeing cool people wear it is a good thing. It's not only exposure, but legitimizes it and even makes it aspirational. It's hardly desperate. They need to build awareness of it, and this is an awesome way of doing it.

Just approve the Star Wars watch face already! Lucas Arts is practically Apple's cousin by marriage!

No, Apple bought Beats who excelled at high visibility product placement for "informal" advertising and they have new people from the fashion industry in charge of things now who use this as well.

I would expect to see the next visibly different iThing launch also include this type of "advertising" as well from here on out...bit sad.

Except for the sad part, I agree with this assessment. I just see it as Apple recognizing the target group they're trying to reach and using tried and true effective marketing that has worked on the target group.

It's something different for Apple - previously the price for things while expensive were always within reach of most middle class income levels (if prioritized enough) and everyone (no matter how rich) got the same shot at the first deliveries...now we have toys in that same price range but also versions only for the ultra rich - and only the ultra rich / famous get them before anyone else who has to wait for a delayed online delivery...seems rather un Jobs'ian...but its the way Apple is turning.

Everyone seems to focus on the higher end of the product line. I guess because that's where the product placement seems to be. Advertising the halo is what drives the sales of the lesser products. Pretty much all companies with a diversified product line do the same thing. I guess it's strange at Apple because their product line has traditionally been pretty linear.

The iPhone is their cash cow. Apple would never let that thing into people's hands before the launch date.

I'm betting this changes for the next refresh of the iPhone. Now that they've (Cook and especially Ive) tasted how good it feels to be "in", they'll keep it going as long as they can.

It costs Apple almost nothing to give even an Edition to someone in "high fashion" or "celeb status" given that less than 5-10 retail Apple Watch Sport sales easily cover the cost. So if a celeb has 100,000 followers and a 0.01% buy in of those followers covers your costs of giving them an Edition... Give them just a Watch and it probably just takes 2-3 retail sales to cover that cost...

I feel much the same - before, everyone, no matter how famous or rich, had the same chance to get the first deliveries of Apple products, but that is not the way things are now (and probably going forward) - that other world for the ultra rich and famous lands in our faces.

As to why - Product placement advertising like this was SOP for Beats (whom they just bought), they did this alot, and the people from the fashion industry subsumed into the executive suite also use is constantly. Definitely not the Apple of old - but I'd expect this to SOP from here on out.

...Now that they've (Cook and especially Ive) tasted how good it feels to be "in", they'll keep it going as long as they can.

I'd bet your right...however the fly in the ointment is that the iPhone 6s will (if history is any guide) look identical to the 6 and placement will be almost worthless beyond being an iPhone. The iPhone 7 though...

When you boil it down that simplistically, then what is the point of the pattern in the shirt you wear? The style of the frame of the glasses you wear? The color of your shoes?

See where this is going?

The blank watch face is fine from a tech and functionality perspective. But it's obvious Apple is branding the watch as a fashion piece as well. A fashion accessory is meant to be seen and noticed.

But a blank face on a watch doesn't lessen its value as a piece of jewelry, it just looks like a cuff or bracelet with a stone in the center. Many men wear bracelets (or the more "manly" cuffs). That's why it's so nice that the AppleWatch has a clean, classic design. It is understated and not douchy "trying too hard to impress" like so many traditional men's watches. It's a thinking person's watch. A watch for people who value function over overtly trying to impress people.

Why does Apple keep giving multi million celebs expensive watches while the common folk struggle to pay for their low end sport edition.

It's good advertising. People see celebrities wearing the watch so they want one too. It gives Apple good exposure.

You could be right, but I don't think it will happen with iPhones. The iPhone 6S will look so much like the iPhone 6 that no one will notice. And Apple didn't need any help like this with the iPhone 6 sales.

If Apple makes a car in five or ten years, I think you'll see celebrities (both popular and automotive) invited to become early adopters.

I read an article (not sure if it was on here) that said Apple was using a tremendous amount of resources into researching our basic everyday movements. This was so that it could correctly count our steps when using the watch for that, and also to differentiate when we want to look at our wrist or are simply moving our arm for something else. I don't think that can ever work perfectly, but at least in this pic it looks like it's working as designed.

so are u saying ur basic teenage boy wont be credited for a marathon during bathroom hours?
