Do people still claim that Apple doesn't spend any money on product placements?

I doubt you'll have any takers on this.

But a big part of this is new for Apple, this is giving away/pay product for high visibility placement prior to 1st deliveries to the peons who have to order the product and wait for weeks/months...

But a blank face on a watch doesn't lessen its value as a piece of jewelry, it just looks like a cuff or bracelet with a stone in the center.

I think that's being generous. The blank face is the centerpiece of the watch. It's a giant black chunk. I don't think it looks terrible, but I'm sure if Apple had the option they would surely want something displayed on that screen instead of nothing. So that's a limitation, especially in the fashion sense.

It's a thinking person's watch. A watch for people who value function over overtly trying to impress people.

A thinking person's watch?

But a blank face on a watch doesn't lessen its value as a piece of jewelry, it just looks like a cuff or bracelet with a stone in the center. Many men wear bracelets (or the more "manly" cuffs). That's why it's so nice that the AppleWatch has a clean, classic design. It is understated and not douchy "trying too hard to impress" like so many traditional men's watches. You know, not everyone who is wearing a watch that is all design and no function ( wich is 99% of traditional watches, they just give you time and nothing else ) is trying to impress people. I could spend all day looking at this or this or this watch for example, if I had one on my wrist. I just find them incredibly beautiful.

A taste for aesthetics is perfectly compatible with deep thinking.

Ugh, this watch is turning Macrumors into a bad celebrity gossip website. Only missing the commentary about which type of soup they're enjoying while utilizing the accessory.

I'm getting real sick of seeing these celebs with their free and early Apple Watches. It's a real douchebag move on Apple's part. The watch is clearly selling fine without giving away free and early watches.

Now I remember why I quit visiting MacRumors' forums - people without even a basic understanding of Marketing 101 making asinine comments like this...

That, and the fact that 11 like souls voted up this comment...:(

Not to be that guy but I'm going to be that guy.

Why is it that rich people get the watch early for free and yet customers have to purchase it and then wait? It reminds me of the tax system of the USA.

I'm just saying I want the watch now too. :)

REALLY? The tax system? The tax system I know is the more money a person makes they more they have pay!!! Unless the person making more money is using more government support (roads, school, police, fire, etc) I don't see why a higher income should have to pay more.

Also, there is zero - zero - proof the watches are free. Do you really think these people can't afford to buy it??? Show ONE sign of proof the watches are free.

I don't recall anyone saying the blank face lessened the value of the watch as a piece of jewelry. Some people like the blank face. Some are meh about it. Others don't like it. So what? The aWatch is not for everyone. My daughter likes it. She thinks it's cute. I think it's too unisex for my tastes. Am I right? Is she? It's just an opinion.

Bolded from your quote: I literally lol'd when I read this.:D It's right up there with "most personal device we've ever made". Unnecessarily florid don't ya think? It's a thinking person's watch. What does that even mean? Are there actually watches out there for non thinking people?

A watch for people who value function over trying to impress people... can be had at Walmart for less than $10.

so are u saying ur basic teenage boy wont be credited for a marathon during bathroom hours?

+1. This is a Deadspin quality comment. My inner 16 year old giggled.:D

That it is, and it looks just as awful as the first trailer. I have lost all hope of the new films being anywhere near good. JJ doesn't have a clue how to make a good Star Wars film. Never send a fanboy to do a professional job, they'll ruin it every time.

I guess you either haven't seen the new Star Trek films, or are in the tiny minority that don't think they were extremely good.

These are going to be good films. I thought all storm troopers were clones though??

You're missing the point. Nobody wants the look of a smartwatch. By not showing the artificial watch face(as opposed to a real analog watch face), it makes the Apple Watch look less smart watch and more real watch. In fact, I really couldn't tell if he was actually wearing a smartwatch.

Makes you think, "Wow, that Star Wars trailer 2 was awesome! JJ Abrams is cool! Oh look, he has an $1k Apple Watch. I should get one too to be cool."

Giving away Apple Watches to celebrities was part of the multimillion dollar advertising budget.

Plus Apple has good partnership with Disney

Is apple gifting the watches to all the celebs or are they getting to purchase them ahead of everyone.

Regardless, now we know why there is such a shortage.

A shortage because of giving them to celebrities? I hope you're not serious, because given away hundreds or even a few thousand Apple Watches is pretty much an irrelevant drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of thousands or millions they have available for people to buy at launch.

It looks like a piece of technology, not jewelry.
At best, it looks like a black jade bracelet with a knob on the side.

Abrams should do the Right Thing and make a charitable donation to a worthy charity in the amount of the value of the watch he was given Just Because He's a Celebrity.

Do we need an article for every time someone wears an Apple watch?

You need to understand how the world works. Your anger is misplaced.

Wait, what? The blank face makes it look less like a smart watch? I doubt many would share that opinion.

Isn't this a little backwards though? What analog watch doesn't show a face? If you couldn't tell he was wearing a smartwatch, what would you think he was wearing, a bracelet? You couldn't have thought he was wearing a traditional watch since they all have faces.

Who was the last professional they got to direct a Star Wars movie again?

I forgot. Mostly because I've been drinking heavily ever since in an effort to do exactly that.

Yeah these forums fell apart years ago.

I'm gonna say something that most of you don't want to hear. Apple isn't just giving out these watches to celebrities. Most likely, they are paying celebrities to wear it, because otherwise why would they wear it? The watch is not that known or popular outside of the tech world. And lets be frank, its kinda fugly in gold. So Apple is paying for popularity now. Yeah i said it.

The iWatch was widely considered a disaster when the world got its first peek, derided by fashion experts and regular folks alike. Seem like Apple's marketing muscle has convinced the world the Emperor's New Clothes is dandy indeed.

It's a thinking person's watch. A watch for people who value function over overtly trying to impress people.

Only if they go for the Sports version. Even then, one could argue that they're trying impress. A $20 Timex/Casio is for someone who values function (telling accurate time) over trying to impress people. I prefer a Seiko 5--the least expensive, reliably automatic watch. No one has been impressed by its looks, but when I tell them it's over 20 years old and still keeps accurate (for a mechanical watch) time. Day-um. That's impressive.

At $10K for the Apple Edition is deep, deep in the trying to impress people territory.

I think you may be wrong.

Are we sure that's not a black sports band? There's a ton of blue lighting and light-wash coming off that background... the sports bands aren't perfectly matte, which means that they'll pick up a little ambient lighting... Couldn't the "navy" just be black under really blue light?

This apple watch situation is interesting how they are releasing early and custom models.
