I don't have anything against it, per se -- I'll put it in my Netflix queue when it comes out on disc. But it doesn't look that interesting -- the holiday launch movie I really wanted to see was A Single Man (thoroughly brilliant), and I saw that. I also saw Up in the Air, which was not my choice (it was comme ci, comme ça).

Don't waste your time renting it. There's really no point to watching Avatar at home. There's a weak story, characters you don't care about, and a stupid bad guy. The absolute only reason to see it are the effects and those will look best in 3D IMAX.

Oh plenty of people on forums like it, my view seems to be a minority online, but people I actually know seem unimpressed. I'll happily watch/read sci-fi so it's not a genre problem. I just didn't find a single redeeming quality in the film. I knew it was going to be predictable from the trailer, but I was so bored during the film.

My wife says she was bored too, so there ya go. Your standards are different or higher (your choice) than mine. :) When I look at this story, I have a hard time imagining how it could have been made better. You normally don't see the natives with bow and arrows beating the tar out of the 22nd century technically superior group. Of course it helped that every animal on planet rallied to their side. I did not think that was predictable, but I'm easy to please. :D

I think it's a mistake telling people not to see it. Contrary opinions are fine, however it's such a monumental project, each should take a peak and decide, maybe wait for the DVD.

On the contrary, I'm saying it needs to be seen in theaters. The home experience will be lacking.

OK- saw it last night and I must say- I really liked it. It looked great and I really had a lot of fun watching it. I was afraid it was going to be like Independence Day or something. It wasn't. It was much better than that.

I don't really see Avatar as a good movie. It's cool to watch because of 3D. It's just that without 3D I wouldn't even have watched it.

It doesn't bring anything new (I am not meaning 3D).

Saw it last night at the IMAX in London. If you're wondering whether to go or not don't wait for this one on DVD it won't be the same at all. The feeling of vertigo you get in some of the scenes makes the movie so much more real.

I really liked it :)

Never seen it. Don't know what it's about. Probably never see it.

I've never seen Star Wars either. Seriously. [Ducks, covers, and runs away from the screaming mob]

Me and the girlfriend caught it on the Imax in 3D a couple of weeks ago. Whilst it's a lot better than "regular" it's still a big meh story.
Definitely not worth the stonking £12 ticket fee. Good gravy!

I can't believe how many people are bashing the film. I thought it was the best movie I have ever seen. The effects have raised the bar for movies incredibly high. Hollywood will never be the same again. The imaginative idea of an extrasolar planetary ecosystem was excellent too. Low gravity, taller humanoids. And the 3D really worked well.

Easily the best science fiction "experience" I have ever seen.

(Just saw it last night so still basking in the afterglow...)

At the Academy Awards, Avatar did as I suspected it would gathering about 4 Oscars, one for Cinematography and one for Visual Effects, which it really did deserve imo. Even though I liked this movie a lot, I have not yet seen the Hurt Locker and have it on my list to see before I can comparatively judge. I realize that one of the important aspects of "best picture" is a strong original story where Avatar came up on the short side. :)

Indeed I don't think that with 3/4 Oscars they can be too disappointed. I thought Avatar was amazing, but certainly the story wasn't particularly original so I think it had a fair series of wins at the Academy Awards.

So many films are made every year that it would be hardwork to come up with a really truly original story frankly. At least I would have a hard time.

Didn't you already post that?
