Starting to think the jet black looks a bit cheap...

That's my feeling, it looks like plastic. Gives it the feel of a phone from 2010 when they were all shiny plastic. BUT I say that without having seen one in person, I may change my mind and they may look incredible in person. But even in videos they look plasticky. I ordered the matte black one which IMO has a metallic, premium look. Plus the first thing that goes on my iphones is a matteskin full body skin so it will be matte no matter what.

Plastic does not make something look cheap. Plenty of amazing looking products made with plastic (and this isn't even made with plastic). It's the whole package that makes something look/feel cheap. I think this looks awesome in it's press shots. After use is another story.

Just saw the Verge review and this one. Both say the Jet Black scratches super easy. Glad I did not go that route! Especially after Apple notes this on their site. Which means they told you and they will NOT be covering these cosmetic issues.

I'm actually pretty glad I cancelled my 7+ jet black on release day and went with regular black. Not only will it get here quicker, and not scratch as easy....but I was able to get the $650 trade in deal as well. All works for me!

Had a jet black ready to go at 3:02am on friday. Last second change up to regular/matte/black-black. And now after seeing both versions in a bunch of videos I am glad I made the switch. I actually like the matte better...Much better.

I just saw this german review:
at 3:50min he says that he LOVED the jet black and that it survived all his tests, with sand and regular use didnt scratch the thing at all. all good for him...

Completely goes against everything I have seen. Look at this.. video starts at 3:03

Yea just saw this one too. Weiiiiiird.
I don't know man. Every single one of the reviewers highlights how stunning the jet black looks though, even with scratches.

He only dropped the iPhone 7s in the sand and his 7s was Matte Black NOT Jet Black - and he never spent anytime looking over the backs of the phones. I'd say that video tells us nothing about JB finish.

Personally I don't think I'd care much about the scratching. I already have a transparent case I plan on using for my iPhone 7 Plus. At this point, I think the biggest issue with the jet black iPhone (at lease the plus version) is availability. I decided not to place a preorder to get towards the end of this month because I want to get the phone on launch day. If that means I get matte black, I guess that's that. The fact that all the review sites seem to be getting the jet black in the standard iPhone 7 size and the pluses in the matte black also worries me.

Gruber agreed that it will scratch pretty easily, however this is what he concluded:

And the jet black finish is like nothing I’ve ever seen or felt with aluminum before.

If I didn’t have these review units, I think I would have pre-ordered a regular black iPhone 7. Now that I’ve spent time with them, however, I think I want a jet black iPhone 7.

Here's the full review - it's worth reading:

I find it really weird that they released a colour that scratches so easily. Saw the review and dammmn they scratch fast. (Relieved I went with with Matte Black)

Kind of like they released it just because they wanted to release a new (major) colour to give the illusion that the design is "newer".....do you guys think if they would NOT have released this new major colour, people would have complained about the old design????

I just mentioned this on another thread. That's exactly why they did it. When there's nothing super significant to differentiate a new model, you go with the tried an true method of adding new colors.

No surprises after reading review.

Get a clear case if you want to minimize scratches. It will get scratches, with or without the case. Just more without a case.

Matte black for me next year (when I'm eligible for new phone). Figured as much when the keynote was delivered and nothing changed, now.

I'm going to wax mine. seriously
Be careful a chemical reaction will reverse the anodized process/coating. You really only need a mild dish detergent and sponge when it comes to anodized coatings. Anything abrasive will eventually cut through the hard coating and chemicals will help make it easier.

I am so glad I went matte. When announced I was "definitely" going to get jet black but after looking at more pictures and videos I changed my mind. Looked like a 5C kind of plastic.

Can't wait to get my JB 7+... I ordered a Ringke clear case, but honestly I think I'm going to use it naked.
1) Let's be honest, if you're like me and a large percentage of people on this forum, you're going to get an iPhone 8 next year anyway.
2) I have AT&T Next 12,... I really, really doubt they will give people any trouble as far as exchanging it next year due to micro abrasions.
3) I'm getting AppleCare+... this means in 6 months or whenever, if I am really put off by the scratches for some reason, I can pay the fee and swap it for cosmetic reasons.

For all of those reasons, and because I personally liked the look of the 3G/3GS, I am excited to be getting the Jet Black!

I have a black Galaxy S7 Edge and even it has some scratches on the back, and I use a case about half of the time. Mostly microscratches on the bottom corners and one big one across the back from when I dropped it in the kitchen and it went skidding across the floor. The scratches certainly bother me, but the finger prints and oil all over the back bother me a lot more.

I was really leaning toward the Jet Black as it certainly looks amazing, but I think I'm glad I went with silver.

The return line for the first 2 weeks will be full of JB.

good luck getting a replacement in a decent color. I don't think matte black is going to be readily available for people returning..... and they'll be without a phone if they did upgrade vs buy outright if they decide to wait for matte black to become available.....
