With proper demeanor, there is nothing wrong with pointing out something you find offensive, and someone else subsequently taking issue with the fact that you find said thing offensive. It's good to have discussions like that, because it helps create middle ground in what has become such a polarized world. I'm right and you're the cause of everything bad in the world because you don't think exactly how I think, you know what I mean? :D

I do. And I love discussing these very kinds of things. That's why I'm here.

Really? That is what you have to say from the article?

Dre and Iovine sure are a pair...

I read the article twice thinking I had missed something but no, those really are the comments causing a fuss, and they are a complete and utter non-story.

Jimmy's head is far more interesting than a bunch of armchair feminists sitting around waiting for any chance to jump on a non-issue and turn it into a straw man argument to beat to death for their own self-righteous amusement.

Move along, nothing to see here, plenty to see of actual importance elsewhere in the world.

I'm not watching the whole video, but whether it's sexist or not depends on context. Had someone brought up women/girls in particular, or the issue of sad music particularly suited to the situation he described? If so, and he was just mentioning a use case they might have, then there's no problem. If he brought it up on his own, coming out with, basically, "hey, women are cry babies and we can market to them" then that's a little prejudiced.

It's just another in an endless string of paternalistic condescension that women have endured since forever.

I get that he didn't mean anything wrong by it. But that's part of the issue ... good intentioned people who don't understand the subtext of their own messages.

Perhaps the blowback will help spark a little more self-awareness in the future for Mr. Iovine.
I like this. But I can't be offended by anything Jimmy Iovine has to say. He has no relevance to my life.

I can easily make playlists. But what the hell is a mix tape?

I recorded songs I liked from various tapes off of my dual cassette boom box in the 80's and early 90's. I went directly from that to CD's briefly and then to MP3's. I know not what this man is babbling about...tapes...bah humbug.

I am honestly curious why.

I'm a dude. This guy thinks I'm better at finding music and you're worse at it.

Because of our genders alone.

That honesty doesn't bother you? Do you think it's true?

I don't see where he stated that women are worse at finding music. He started it with saying that he thought of a problem (read: he thought of an example). He said: "So it's hard to find the right music, you know. Not everybody has the right lists, or knows a DJ or something." That statement isn't gender specific. He gave an example and then makes that above statement which is actually gender neutral. Unless, you know, you're grasping for a reason to spin what he said into something it wasn't.

edit: I re-watched the ad and I'm guessing that the reason why he said some women have trouble finding music is because he featured Mary J Blige and her friends in the ad so it was about a group of women discovering an easy way to find music. He kind of restated the premise of the ad. Or maybe he totally hates women. Either way, I find this debate amusing.

I'm literally watching an ad showing an old guy taking a phone call from his financial advisor and being reassured by him. That's like the executive saying something like "some retired people find it very difficult to manage their investments. Our company makes it easy to plan for the future." ... Seems pretty harmless. I think it's the same situation, but people are just way to sensitive when they react to it.

Like I said before, the whole thing is out of context, his comments stem from Apple's ad, which is targeting women. There is no controversy here.

this makes it clear you have to be hyper careful everything you say when in a room of women these days. they will find a flaw in anything and turn you into the sexist woman hater for it.
I am so offended. I'm reporting you to the head of my local chapter of Angry Women Activists. We will sit in a room complaining about you until Mary J Blige curates a playlist for us full of Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift songs. Then we will link arms and sing along until we achieve catharsis.

Or we will just call in for a pizza and watch recordings of our favorite moments from The View. (That actually sounds like my idea of hell, but the pizza sounds promising!)

Controversy? Imagine if he said:

Jimmy Iovine said:
"I just thought of a problem, you know: girls are standing around in the kitchen, you know, making a sandwich for their boys, you know. And they need music for that, right? So it's hard to find the right music, you know. Not everybody can multi-task, has the right lists, or knows a DJ or something."

The cry bullies are out today, social justice warriors with a bullhorn, an attitude, and indignation wasting the world's time.

Jimmy Iovine thinks something someone doesn't like, says something someone doesn't like. Well, most people don't like what the opposition think or say as well. Now what? Loudest voice or biggest gun wins?

I don't see where he stated that women are worse at finding music.

Iovine said that "women find it very difficult at times -- some women -- to find music, …and [Apple Music] helps makes it easier with playlists curated by real people."

Ok, no snark here. Just outright curiously.

You're telling me that when you read that you think "women" means "women and also all people?"

I find that an incredibly odd way of speaking. Is that's what happening, though? That you read that and think this?

To me, when you mention a sub-group it means you're comparing that group to something. Is that not true? Do people sometimes divide things up without any intention of comparing those things?

Our president said we have 57 states. He may or may not be an idiot but taking extemporaneous comments such as Iovines or Obamas gaffe too seriously is ridiculous. People are offended by so little these days. How do they even live.

What a shock. Womyn get butthurt over literally anything you say about them. Everyone wants to be persecuted these days.
