It's going to be very costly when people start returning them due to poor signals. Do you really think a Genius is going to say this to someone's face: "Well, sir, you're not holding your phone right. You should really be holding it this way...". Good luck with that spin.

Yes, if SJ is willing to send a personal e-mail with that explanation if it gets to a point they'll say that.

The thing is this hasn't boiled over yet. The odds are that the average iPhone user isn't on a tech blog reading about it & posting about it on a forum. People have to start returning them and the press has to be consistently bad. If it reaches the same level of outcry we saw with the iPhone 2G price drop then the odds of a concession go sky high.

I think gethyphyyo has the right idea. If we see anything it'll be free bumpers. Either because Apple will issue a mea culpa or there will be some class action lawsuit. I just simply don't see a redesign coming from Apple.

This is a company that in the past has been known for always trying to wriggle out of warranty repairs for obscure or bizarre reasons.

I can't remember any off hand or find any immediately with a search (so I very well can be wrong), but when has Apple ever redesigned a flagship product at any point in the middle of a cycle? Even with the macbook problems back at the intel switch, I don't recall any in-cycle redesigns to alleviate known issues.

I know mine has an issue I can replicate it easily and I DROP MY **** CALLS left and right! I know not everybody is having the same issues but I know mine is far worse than my 1G that I had before this that rarely dropped calls here.

Steve's right this is a non issue being made into a big deal by haters and trolls. If you really aren't happy with the most amazing phone in the world then take it back and buy a POS Android phone. If This was a real problem then ther's no doubt in my mind that Steve would take care of it. He's never let us down before. Don't let the haters win, ignore them they're just jealous they can't afford a real phone because they're on welfare.

Lol you are joking right? :D

Uh, anyone from a non-us country experiencing that issue?

I'm still inclined to think that it only get's an issue together with AT&T. E.g here in Switzerland i'm not aware of any dropped calls (from iphone or other mobiles).

I'm in the UK on O2 and have the same problem, it's not network specific.

YES. I am in Japan and it is happening to me. The signal bars to down to zero, then "Searching...", then "No service". Moving one's left hand or setting the phone down, the signal instantly comes back.

I think this takes a little bit of pressure off of AT&T. Clearly the wireless phone is the biggest factor in determining call reception.

Steve, how can I fix cell reception issues with my iPhone? When will this issue be fixed?

Non issue. Just build a cell-tower.

The phone is designed to be held in the left hand in such a way.

Every advertisement from Apple has the phone being held in such a way.

Steve Jobs holds the phone in such a way.

What kind of answer is that. And YES my iPhone does get signal drops holding it in my hand. I've only had about 10 calls and one of them was a dropped call.

I RARELY if ever had dropped calls with my old EDGE or 3G. WTF?

Didn't they redesign the wifi antennas on several products?

I am right handed, but hold the phone in my left hand to use apps, browse etc. I am losing a 4 bar signal completely every time I do this. This is bull.

I am on hold with apple tech support. My suggestion is everyone with this problem call apple and get a case number; and if they do not fix, return the product. It's not useable with this issue.

I'm also calling ATT and asking for a prorated refund until the issue is solved. Even if I don't get it, they need to tell apple to fix the problem. if everyone with the problem also called ATT that would be one pwerful complaint.

Some of these responses remind me of another thread where someone was complaining about making calls with the iPhone, and he stated first and foremost it should be a phone. Of course, he was told to get a non-iPhone if having a phone was important to him. I guess it’s the iSurfer or iCamera to these guys. NVM that Apple used Phone in the name.

I haven't been able to get my iPhone 4 to lose any signal buy holding it in any certain way. It could be my girly hands. :)

Am going to ring Apple UK Support first thing tomorrow to complain, they can bloody well send me a free bumper grrrrrrr

Just another heads up on the press coverage of this possible design flaw:

The BBC are running an article about this signal fault. There's no mention of Apple's official response yet, but it's the number 1 shared article and the number 2 most read on the BBC news website at the moment. It was the number 1 most read article for several hours today. That's a lot of people!

I don't think Steves 'non-issue' comment will be sufficient and I'm predicting a better response from Apple over the coming days.

This is a VERY serious issue, and a SERIOUS flaw in the design.. there is no ****ing way that Apple can release a statement that says "hold it differently" we didnt have to hold the first 3 iphones differently, why would we upgrade to something that when you hold it if your pinky slips you lose the call??

This is very unfortunate, and truly a massive mistake by apple.

Reality

Apple has only been in the cell phone business for 3 years now. Clearly, they still have a lot to learn.

I bet RIM, Moto, Sony, etc....all design their cell phones with antennas placed in the proper position based on the user's expected hand position.

I wonder if all of the "AT&T Problems" have really been iPhone issues.

give it time people..

one week from now..this will be a non issue.

remember the whole IPad is an awful name thingy....give it time and people move on.

When

You are actually talking on the phone and are right handed You definitely don't cup the bottom left. So phone calls are fine. It's texting and such where I see a problem.

Am I the only one that finds this funny in a way?

Yes I'm pissed about a serious flaw, and even more pissed by SJ's unbelievable arrogance.

SJ may be a great creative and corporate mind, but he has no clue about customer service and taking care of customers. I saw many people mentioning their love for Chick-Fil-A earlier in a separate thread after it was served to people in lines at some Apple stores this morning. I can assure you that if the spicy chicken sandwich that CFA just released had a problem (incorrect batter or some other problem; I know comparing a sandwich to a device is a stretch, but go with me...), S. Truett Cathy himself would A)Not have waited until complaints grew to a deafening roar to address the public, and B)Would have made pleasing the customer his number one goal; not defending himself with pathetic, sophomoric spin.

But anyway, for years Steve has positioned himself as superior to Microsoft. Yes, their products and OS are better, but these Messiah-like presentations get old. To first have a major problem during the i4 unveiling and now this should humble the man. It will be good for him. If I treated one of my clients this way, they'd leave me, simple as that.

Apple has more and more competition now, and they better believe that I'll be taking a closer look at the other phones on the market.
