It would surpass the BSOD fiasco at the Windows 98 launch.
I'd say the BSOD fiasco was on par with Steve's failure to load a webpage on the iPhone and subsequently asking everyone to turn off WiFi. Back in the days of Win95/98/ME, the BSOD was so commonplace it was more of a chuckle moment than a proper fiasco.

But this time Apple is breaking new ground... the antenna issue wasn't an "oops" moment, they actually decided to leave the phone like this.

They've done stuff in the past that triggered my form-over-function alarm... the shape of the Magic Mouse comes to mind... the ridiculously scratch-prone chrome backs on old iPods too... but to actually willfully design a broken phone because they wanted it to look a certain way? Well, let's just say I no longer have a form-over-function alarm. It exploded.

BTW - and yes, I'm being snarky here. And NOT that I really care - because I don't. But I find it interesting that people took potshots at me for posting and cried BS and never bothered to apologize or anything remote. This "community" is lacking is some aspects of community.

Although I didn't comment on this before 10 minutes ago, I'm sorry there are so many fanboys around that don't believe you. Your 68020 status should've bought some credibility among others.

I think what may have put doubt in some minds is the sheer cockiness and rudeness of his response. This does not sound like the response from the CEO of a company with high customer satisfaction, who is trying to put his best face forward on launch day.

give it time people..

one week from now..this will be a non issue.

remember the whole IPad is an awful name thingy....give it time and people move on.

The iPad name didn't effect the operation of an expensive device. This does. There will be MANY people (myself included) who return their phones and switch to Droid if there is no fix.

How can people still throw money in Steve's direction after this? I already regret buying this phone.

No Flash for my sheeps! Ok Steve
Only apps from the appstore! Ok Steve
This is how you hold your phone! Ok Steve
Jump in a circle for me and send me all your money! Ok Steve

You are actually talking on the phone and are right handed You definitely don't cup the bottom left. So phone calls are fine. It's texting and such where I see a problem.

The reverse is true for left handed people. So essentially its a problem for everyone.

Then stop complaining and return it. You're well within your 30 day window.

Just another heads up on the press coverage of this possible design flaw:

The BBC are running an article about this signal fault. There's no mention of Apple's official response yet, but it's the number 1 shared article and the number 2 most read on the BBC news website at the moment. It was the number 1 most read article for several hours today. That's a lot of people!

I don't think Steves 'non-issue' comment will be sufficient and I'm predicting a better response from Apple over the coming days.

I mentioned earlier that the news media are going to be all over this like a bunch of horny prisoners on a 19-year-old girl. :p

It IS simple. I've been dropping 1/5 calls on my 4. I find when I hold it pinched between my thumb and index finger, by the glass only - it works flawlessly.

Again, it IS simple. I'm going to see about returning it tomorrow. In doing so, I'm going to pursue canceling my contract with AT&T and getting something else.... I've had the iphone since the beginning, so don't call me a hater when I say that I'm going Andriod...I don't even like them - the iphone is so much nicer, if it worked...but it doesn't.

... Basically I think it's too much of a coincidence that Apple is now offering 1st party iPhone cases, okay well bumpers at a time when they have a product that suffers from such a signal degradation issue. Basically asked him if there were any plans to provide them for free or reimburse those that have already purchased them. I spent $60 on two of them today simply because of the signal issue.

Exactly.

What I find funny is that the exact same thing occurs with some (if not all) iPhone 3g and 3gs models. Yet, I've never heard any complaints about it. Happens with my mate's iPhone, bottom left corner too!

I think now that Apple has revealed the antenna as the stainless steel frame, only now do people speculate that it could have an effect on the reception.
And look at what it has lead too!

For all we know, it's been right under our noses all these years, but only now are people beginning to realize, and only now are we bothered by it now it has come to out realization, what does that tell you?

If you watch the videos on youtube, Jon4lakers and SoldierKnowsBest. Both show that if you hold the phone over the low-left corner, you lose only 1 or 2 bars max!. But it's only when you clench the phone REALLY HARD!!! you lose 3 to 4 bars and lose all reception. I don't know about you, but my iPhone isn't one of those squeezing stress relief devices, it's a bloody phone!!! :)

I don't know, I'm worried now. I have my iPhone4 since yesterday afternoon, and so much I love about it. BUT there are problems. Not only does the reception drop dramatically when you touch these areas, and who doesn't when they hold the phone? But I am finding that if I put the phone in my pocket, I get about 90% signal loss. Meaning, as what is happening already, I'm missing calls! Why, because 90% signal loss, if you're not getting 100% signal strength means you have NO SIGNAL at all. I've missed several calls already.

Next is vibe, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm finding it doesn't vibrate as well as the 3G does. But also doesn't always vibe when the phone rings or you get an email when it is on silence! I was in a meeting all day today, the phone was on a hardwood desk in front of me, normally if a phone vibes it is loud because the wood makes it echo. Well, I got a phone call, and nothing, no vibe, nothing! I happened to pick up the phone 2 minutes after the call came in and noticed a missed call. NOT GOOD.

Finally is call failure. So far I have had 100% first time call failure. 100%! This afternoon I was trying to call my wife, I had to try almost 10 times for it to even DIAL OUT! My 3G had major call failures as well, but nothing like this.

I'm hoping today was a fluke and things will get better when the systems get back to normal after all the activations. Or if it continues I'll take it back in and see if I can get it swapped out and try another one. But it might be going back before 30 days.... but I ***REALLY*** don't want to do it, everything else is great (fortunately I don't use the phone part too much).

that is racist and you should be banned for that!
Umm... you do realize the difference between comedy and speaking seriously on one's on behalf, right? You see, when Eric Cartman makes extremely racist remarks about jews, it doesn't represent the actual opinions of the creators of South Park. It's just a character, just like Steve is a character in the fake email posted here.

just buy an ichain and stand like this when you make a call

Probably the moscone center had perfect AT&T signal with a base station right on top of the building.

That's irrelevant - what's of relavance is that the CEO himself is holding the iphone exactly the way he claims it sholudn't be held.. and I bet that's the way most people hold their iphones.

Looks to me like that's a 3GS that he's holding the "wrong" way.
