i do have the signal loss issue. i live in a small town and i do not have 3g coverage. it is very easy for me to replicate the issue on edge. my question is, will the genius bar actually replace my phone if i state a lot of phones are not having this issue, or will they not? tia!

Just another unprofessional response from Steve Jobs.

If he is not the voice of the company then lets get the email of the person who is!

I hope apple will be providing bumpers or refunds for one previously purchased bumper...Though they might be wise enough to say.."You dont like it, return the phone" which most of you masking tape toting masses will simply not do :)

Unfortunately, I am going to agree with Jobs. With my iPhone 4 I really had to hold the iPhone 4 tightly to make the signal go down while holding it like people have reported. So, if you just hold the iPhone just right then you wouldn't have theses issues. It is an easy fix. Also new video showing it on a Nokia same problems. Seems like all phones have an issue if you block the reception. So stop whining you have an iPhone 4 be happy that you have one. Some are dieing to have one.

Another Apple sympathizer..... how will you feel when your calls drop or data connectivity stops because you didn't hold it a certain way. Having to think about how I hold it is stupid, and Apple knows it.

If you open your mind for a second you may realise that other people are more affected then yourself by this. I can lay my phone on the desk, press my finger lightly on the side, bridge the gap and completly lose my signal. So what is an easy fix for this then o clever one?

As for the Nokia, it's a different problem relating to an ancient phone which didn't cost £599!!!

Wow.

Time to own up guys. If this had been any other company, they'd be burned @ the stake by the apologists.

Apple released a poorly designed product that for many users doesn't even function as advertised.

Honestly, I'm ok with that. Where I have the problem is that they aren't owning up to the problem.

Seems to me that on this one Jobs is in a corner.

In the UK our national radio station (Radio Five Live) has a female presenter called Victoria Derbyshire. She has in five minutes disproved the adage "bad publicity is better than no publicity" - by having four new iPhone owners .. three of which are not happy at all with the actual reception issues. "I was going to get one", she said. "Until I heard these terrible stories - I think I'll wait 'til theyre resolved, now".
The new purchasers waxed typically enthusiastically in hyperventilated tones over the superb-ness that IS the iPhone but all concurred ... this problem has to be sorted ASAP.
One of these said that Apple in the UK are giving out FREE Bumpers as a work around ... but the concensus of thought being ... Apple have made a major cockup and have to come clean.
In that small section of her programme she has probably set back Apple's reputation by about five years ... the problem being that the folks' being interviewed were all experienced past iPhone owners and all of them said that depspite the new iPhone 4 being fan-dab-a-dozy in top features - they could not forgive Apple for rushing this phone out. As one said "The problem is, Apple are notoriously secretive re new products. The prototype iPhone 4s were all case-sheathed so the problem never happened... now they go and release it and this happens!"
Luckily no one mentioned the yellow-blob-screen issue or the scratch-prone casing .... but lets say they did Apple no favours - even tho' they are quite justified in voicing their real concerns.
Personally-I dont think this IS an issue. Most folks use a case - problem solved. And it'd be a right tosseur who didnt protect their £600 phone anyway .... but its still bad hype and could REALLY hit Apples reputation and consequent product sales.
And as another owner said "To date, all Apple products 'Just Work' ... but not in the iPhone 4's case"
I think Steve Job's best case scenario (best case ... geddit?) - is to issue two statements -
1) This issue is not an issue and is too minor a problem to address-if a case is fitted and the right hand is used... no issue
2) BUT if you are left-handed or are a case phobic freak ... we will supply FREE Bumpers with every iPhone

The latter solution will cost em.. but compared to a Nissan Brake recall it's peanuts. Yes they are WAY over priced at £25.00 but considering to make them is only £5.00 this is negligible.

So - Apple.
Do NOT underestimate the upcoming impact of this faux-pas. Acknowledge it and 'solve it' with a free Bumper bundle. Good.
Underestimate how important it is to agree that this is an issue (but NOT a recall job or a Version 2 upgrade kinda thing) and for those who feel it intrudes into their iPhone enjoyment can 'resolve' it by shoving on a free Bumper. Or just buy a case.

Right thats THAT sorted for him ...
Now .. pass me the file on the Yellow Blob Situation ... I think that will take me a LOT longer to sort!!! :D

I haven't seen any proof that there are phones which are not affected by this. We need to see two iPhone 4's side by side, one replicating the problem and one not. Until then we should asume that all phones are affected and it's purely down to the location.

Surely it is nothing to do with holding the phone "tightly" either?

That's like saying the harder you press the light switch the less bright the bulb goes?

Mine actually seems pretty bad and considering the antenna is on the outside, my signal strength is generally lower than i had on my 3G yesterday in the same position.

You have to think how you hold most things in life, an electrical plug, a knife, your p***s, are these also badly designed?

Oh please..... electrical plugs are insulated; knives have handles. If this is your best arugment for the antenna design deficiency its pretty sad.

No, I'm not going to "stop whining". I, and many others just spent over $600 on a telephone that doesn't work properly. Jobs' response is an insult to common sense, something which, if you have any, has been suspended by pure hero worship.

My 3GS works just fine as does just about any other phone you can buy on the market. I'll take this one back and use my old one. No "whining", that's just the way it is. This thing is a total POS and the fact that you choose to bury your head in the sand says much more about you than it does me (or any one else who actually expects the phone to do what it is advertised to do)...

ALL mobile phones are affected by being held, proximity to other objects, orientation, location and who knows how many other variables to some extent. Period. The question is whether this is an issue with a real life impact for most people in normal use. I suspect not, but we will see in due course.

I actually hate Apple..This is the only Apple product I own. I guess my iPhone 4 isn't as bad as others. From the video I Have seen this dude was holding it tight and covering the metal completely to do so. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Sorry for pissing people off.

If I hold my phone in my hand I lose signal, is that not real life impact????

Finally, we get to see the real S Jobs. He or his company does not care about you or the item they have just sold you because they now have your money, and it happens every year on every update of every new shiny thing they bring out.

This is Apple way of working. Im afraid the old Apple you knew and probably loved (when they were the underdog of the personnel computer world) has long gone.

If I wrap my hand around a plug and touch a pin with my finger as it goes into the wall I will be electrocuted. If I hold a knife at the wrong end I will be cut. If I clamp my hand around the lower left hand side of my iPhone in an area with poor or conflicting cell coverage my reception will decrease. There is an arguement in all these cases for holding it correctly!

some iphone 4 users are stating that their phones do not have this problem. they have even posted youtube videos showing that it does not happen

I'm holding off until monday. Right now the Genius bar will know jack.

that might be true, but i will be going to apple knox st store in dallas.. i am sure everyone knows of this issue.. hopefully theyll be able to do something for me.. though i do not want a bumper because it wont fit in the pouch that i am purchasing.

anyone else talk to a genius about this and get theirs replaced?

According to this article....

iPhone 4 antenna problem is yet another geek-fueled non issue

http://bit.ly/bROAGv

There certainly seems to be a wide range of responses, from people who can't see the effect to people who believe the effect is so bad, it renders the phone useless.

I have also seen a demo with the 3GS showing exactly the same behavior.

Not sure what to think.

C.

I thought you had common sense? If you had you would have realised that other variables come in to play here like the phones location.
