I also interpret flat as in moving away from skeuomorphisms. Ive seems to be simple and clean, where as skeuomorphisms are overly detailed and trying to be something they aren't

I see that they already started moving away from it with the lastest Podcast app update.

I can't understand why so much praise is lavished upon Ive ... Apple deigns have stayed the same across all brands for many years with the main changes being a reduction in thickness only (which for the iMac has resulted in lost optical drives and the SD slot on the back (WTF!) ... Not to mention the 'chin' is still there! More recently, iPod designs look like children have designed them and iPhone's ... well, they scratch, they're boring and yes, the OS is old old old.

I have strongly pushed the idea for placing the SD card slot and one USB port on the side of the iMac for easy access and ergonomic sense. But Apple have gone the complete opposite of any practical design sense and place them at the rear where users need to twist the whole iMac to reach. I have been a strong defender of Apple aesthetics but this latest round of update with thinner-and-thinner design principle has gone to a new height of irrationality. The previous two generations of iMac is thin enough to be space saving, and it is not necessary to boldly go where thin design has not gone before. And certain things like headphones port, USB port and SD card slot should be placed on the side of the device not the rear.

Not this...please, Apple

Per my analyst, this is what "flat" means

Yuck!!

inb4 microsoft sues.

I sure hope not. Every time I am sitting beside one of my co-workers when they have their Android phones out, I notice two things immediately. The over-saturated cartoon like colors and the just plain "ugliness" of the whole thing. Nearly every screen is just horrid. Yea I know this image is of a Windows Phone fooled around with an iPhone look but the same applies. Fugly!

I smell the fear of no longer supporting some of the previous iOS versions.
"Let's force a hardware upgrade by not supporting any iOS that is not current." - JI

Based on what? Craig Federighi owns iOS, not Jony Ive.

For older eyes

A simple request for a revised OS: increase contrast for text. No more gray on black or gray on white, please. Black on white or white on black for normal text; a bold (not pastelled or blending) color for links, etc. Older eyes have less acuity than you 20-or 30-something coders and designers. And there are, of course, lots of Apple users who simply have impaired eyesight.

Truer Words..

Quite frankly, I dont think there's anything wrong with current iOS. It's fast, intuitive an pretty. What is there to improve there?

This is the best response yet. I agree completely (not that anyone cares, I know). This fascination everyone has with changing things that are already great just baffles the f$%^ out of me. As I had posted earlier, and I'm going to repeat here, Android and Windows Phone are UGLY!! Not to say iOS7 (or 8) will be that ugly, but why change it just to change it? If there is something that doesn't work well that is a different matter but to change it because it is "old" or "not fresh" or whatever else the change whores always want is just moronic.

I have never understood the idea that something is bad just because it is 'old'. There are many old things that we continue to use. For example claw hammers have been used since Roman times and have only had minor changes in all these centuries. If something suits the purpose for which it was designed why should it be changed?

you haven't but there are many many million switchers to android that got it, honestly I don't see the value of the iPhone that much unless I jailbreak it

UI changes? I'm up for it...the rest don't have to change but they do have to add more features

Not that it is as flexible as Windows, but there are some controls for this in System Preferences --> Accessibility-->Display to increase contrast, invert video, and remove color. What's missing are scalable system fonts. Changing the display resolution is not the same thing.

The latest Podcast app update has somewhat of a flat design, maybe it's something like it. Which is good, cleaner looking.

I wonder how long BMW would last if they just put a new engine in their car every year because they had a perfect design 10 years ago.

I'd venture to say most of the people on this forum, at one time or another, have said iOS needs an update because it's stale.

I'm a big proponent of a Themes store. That would shut everyone up about the outdated OS. Don't like it? Change it! Love the old classic look? Choose the 'classic' theme. Everyone's happy!

Wonder why Apple won't grasp this simple concept? Everyone wins.

If this rumor is true and Ive is working hard on refreshing iOS, I am all for it. I don't want to troll but I think the iOS interface as it stands now is so 2007, and what I have seen from the Windows Phone 8 UI is that you can certainly strike a modern interface without compromising usability without the need of being Apple. Honestly, if iOS goes with the minimalistic design of the Metro interface with the usual Jony Ive flair, it will be a win scenario for all iOS users.

This news also makes me wonder if we will see a UI change in OS X as well, given that OS X 10.9 has yet to make a public appearance (I do know that there have been server hints about 10.9 since last year) since Apple switched to a yearly schedule of releases for OS X. Knowing that Ive is in the Human Interface Design Team at Apple I would not be surprised that his drive to refine the OS X interface is part of the reason for this delay, or it could very well be that Apple has decided to return OS X to a normal 2 year upgrade schedule, which would benefit Mountain Lion users greatly.

Let's see what the following months and WWDC 2013 bring to the table...

At least in Android, you find app settings in the app itself. In iOS, you don't know where app settings are. Sometimes they are in the Settings app, sometimes not. At the very least, Apple should decide once and for all what to do with app settings. It's a huge inconsistency.

Oh for specific application? Yes in that case Android has the advantage.

No, compared to how it could best be implemented.

Oh totally, iOS is not perfection, just the best all round compromise available IMO :D

Why? Because Apple doesn't want you to change what they think is the best. I don't see that as a problem. It's just the way this company works. It has it's pros and cons.
If you look at Android, it's usualy fugly, despite the fact, that it's owner can change it, you know why? BC people don't have taste.( in general).

I like the idea of a flatter and simpler design. Doesen't need to be too radical (though I wouldn't mind if it is). I like something like what the mailbox app has done.
http://www.mailboxapp.com

It's very simple, elegant and yet functional. I also find it very pretty, which proves IMO that simple and minimalistic UI design can still be like-able and good on the eyes. It doesn't feel... impersonal. It even feels more natural in a digital environment.

Skeumorphic isn't completely terrible though. Some parts of it are welcomed, specially when it explains how things work, makes it easier to use instinctively, or enriches the experience. Many people hate this, (and could be considered unnecessary) but I do like the way you turn pages on the iBooks app. I hate reading on lcd screens, but that effect makes it feel more natural for me. I hate stupid things like the shredder passbook has though. I REALLY hate it. Just because of it I don't even open the app.

Excellent!

That is actually a VERY good idea!! Therefore there is no way it will ever happen.

Er, no. Just no.

It's 2013, not 2003.

I don't care if it's flat. I just want them to get rid of the terrible skeuomorphic elements.

Flat doesn't mean tiles

You have to admit that was funny. I laughed audibly.

Agreed. Apple will only allow minor colour tweaks if anything. They won't go down the whole total facelift themes Android style. It just looks tacky.

But what if I am tacky and I want my phone to reflect my tackiness? How does it hurt Apple in any way? No one sees my screen but me.

While I do think we will see some "changes" in iOS7, they won't be nearly what half the people here think they will.

I' say that we will see maybe some slight UI changes in iOS7 with them doing a bit more in iOS8 and later. I don't think Ive has had the time to do a complete UI Change plus eve if he had time I don't see Ive or Apple making radical UI changes all in one update. That's not smart for any company to do.
