Well, I'm part of that 3%, at least. With T-Mobile choking me off of UMTS, the mini was the only thing I would accept coming from my iPhone 5. And even then, I still strongly wish it were smaller. I actually probably would've preferred the SE, but only if it weren't bigger and with worse battery life. Regardless, I love my green mini, mostly for the size (relative to other, modern iPhones. My heart lies with iOS 6).

Eyeballing the chart, looks like the 2020 SE, 2022 SE, 12 Mini, and 13 Mini combine for around 12%, so there def is a market for a smaller and budget device that is actually modern. But Apple hasn’t really made that yet, so maybe Apple should just consolidate those devices? A full screen device in the body of the SE with Touch ID in the power button selling for $400 would probably do quite well.
Yes, but they would need to put in an older processor to make the pricing strategy make sense for that model. Otherwise, you cannibalize sales of the larger (and more profitable) models. That’s almost certainly the reason for the old display / housing on the current SE since a full screen device at that price point with the current processor would move a lot of people into that slot.

If you remove the “deterrent” of the larger / more modern screen and design, then you need to either increase pricing (which is where current mini models that are struggling sit) or sacrifice something else to maintain lower cost and differentiation (which is where using a 1 to 2 gen old chip could come into play since the only other current differentiating features are the cameras and Touch ID, which many people admittedly prefer over Face ID).

Can the 5g be off to save battery?
Yes, there’s a smart ‘5G Auto’ option in Settings>Cellular Data>Data> to optimize connecting to 5G when needed, otherwise your iPhone will be on LTE/4G to save battery

There’s also the option on that same window in Settings to run 5G On or LTE, so if you are on home WiFi or know that you will be away from a charger for a long time you can disable 5G outright

I'm currently using a 13 mini and it is great. It is almost unnoticeable in my pocket and the screen size is not limiting at all. It's a shame it didn't catch on.

Battery is pretty bad though. Light usage will barely get you through the day.
For the first month or two I thought the battery wasn’t very good on my 13 mini but lately I can get two days out of it. It often would get very warm when browsing but it doesn’t do that any more.

Well, there goes small phones. I like 13 mini but looks like this will be the last small phone for the foreseeable future. I going to have to make it last a few years.

I’m one those folks who begrudgingly bought a Pro before the mini became reality. And the Pro still works and is in fact still on contract. So before I even need another phone the mini will have blinked in and out of existence.

I did wonder whether to get a mini (I was tempted by the idea of a smaller phone I could bring around on runs with me), but in the end, the better specs of the 13 pro max won out.

“continues to be unpopular with customers.”

Not this customer!

I love my 13 mini, and I think it’ll be a sad day when they discontinue the only phone that actually fits in a regular sized pocket.

So people actually wanted cheaper phones, not smaller phones.

The Iphone SE 2022/2020 is the second smallest phone offered new in 2022 in either Android or IOS, the 4.7" screen is actually more suited to one handed usage than the 5.4" Mini. In addition the home button is another feature that some people prefer to have, also some prefer an LCD screen due to eye comfortability. And if you look at the actual dimensions, it is close but the SE is actually closer in size to the Mini than it is to the Iphone 13, hold all three up together and you can see for yourself.

Not necessarily. Other features would differentiate a Mini-based SE from the rest of the iPhone lineup. Sure, it’s an all-screen device, but the 5.4” display size will still be seen as a compromise compared to the 6.1” models. Moreover, release timing is important. A Mini based SE would probably not arrive until March 2024 when the 13 Mini will be sitting at the bottom of the range, ready to be booted out. That allows time for the iPhone 15 to adopt the pill-shaped hole punch setup expected for this year’s iPhone 14 Pro. So by retaining the notch, the Mini-based SE would still have a dated aesthetic compared to the flagship devices in the lineup. It’s true the iPhone 14 and 13 would remain in the lineup with the notch, but they’ll still have the advantage of the larger screen.

3% is less. The upcoming non Pro 6.7" version that is supposed to replace the mini should sell well. Many will be wanting a bigger screen at a lower price point.
3% is a value that holds no barring writhing a total. How is it so many people fail at basic math here?!

The regular iPhone at 6.7” “may sell decently but at What price??! That is the billion dollar question, and even being produced in a India is NOT. going to save you money. Think about it. A regular iPhone at that size … and people think the iPhone 12/13 mini was too expensive lol just wait for a 6.7” regular iPhone.
People don't buy smaller chicken sandwiches that are priced 10% less than the normal ones, either. I like that apple does a good job at reducing the hardware fragmentation gap, but this better seen on the much loved iPhone SE 2 when the price wasn't stupid and the parts were pretty good. Plenty of people hate big phones but value is value.
Lol.

If you’re buying from McDonalds, yeah that chicken burger is not even worth the suffering of your health! Elsewhere it’s a LOT better and much taster! Guess your tastebuds hasn’t tried anything but McDowells ;)
The screen is bigger than the SEs screens. And those sold better. It’s not the size, it’s the price.
The current and latest SE 3 is another selling sell, production is reduced in just 6 WatchOS of launch! Not even the iPhone 5C or 12 mini suffered that demise!

Just bought one for the wife…I guess she’ll hold out until Tim is persuaded by some analyst to release one.

It all comes down to this: people are using their phones more and and more as their primary Internet access device. That's not going to work with a phone the size of the iPhone 12/13 mini.

The reason I bought 12 Mini is that it fits better in my pants or jacket without the heavyweight. I rarely use my phone for visual entertainment outside the home. At work, I just stream music, CarPlay, Text, Phone calls and research up look-up info. No YouTube/No movies none of that.

I have a 4K $5000 projector at home for movies and tv shows, PC Desktop and PCVR Quest 2 for entertainment. Why strain my eyes into a phone lol.

Why carry such a big ass phone for my personal needs. Just saying.

Well said!

This I think states the use case abs the proper target market for the mini that the SE models kinda just sort of fits.

I bought the 12 mini and now thr 13 mini soon for daily use for the following reasons:

Calls, sms/mms/iMessage, Cisco Jabber, MS Teams with family/friends/work (the latter two specifically and isolated).
Browsing while fully mobile,
Maps - directions bike paths.
Music (also on iPad mini) - music is much more discoverable on iPhone or watch using Shazam.
Managing my work and personal calendar - mostly personal.
Timer for work calls & projects.
Quick notes or reading during subway commute to:from work.
ApplePay purchases when out.
Planning and reviewing workouts at the gym - it’s been months yet starting very soon (home workouts suffice for now). I use Watch heavily to track and record workouts and heart rate and sleep data.
Yo soy estudiando es español (I know there is a mistake there but still learning) - home abs on commute. Haven’t tried on iPad.
Document scanning during work.
Create invoices,
Banking,
Light social media and pictures: I’m not a shutter bug and although growing up I’ve been known by all cliq’s I was either just that or not popular maybe more notorious, I never really cared for the popularity game (I know good people and keep my circle of friends real; I thank Whodini for that at age 11).

From feature phones to smartphones (windows, S60/UIQ, Java/J2ME to iPhones since 3G) I’ve always used the smartphone for its ability to help me improve vs just to socialize.

I prefer to live an active in person social life not to be overburdened by the size or weight for the tech I own or use. A smartphone should allow me to be as mobile as possibly else it’s missed it’s mark for me.

Sure there are a few tidbits I’d want from the iPhone 13 Pro currently but cost isn’t an issue, I just dislike the size n extra abilities I’d never use.

The 5c is a different story, entirely. The 12 Mini already sold to the market the 13 Mini was supposed to. I said since launch of the 12 Mini that it was bound to flop, the 13 Mini is what the 12 was supposed to be.
The 13 Mini flopped because the market of high-end top-dollar flagships was small to begin with and somewhat saturated after the 12 Mini. Also the reputation of Mini was slandered which didn’t help.

You realize that wasn’t my point, right?
Your point was that people aren't buying Mini's because the other phones are being incentivized... but you either failed to mention or possibly realize that Mini's are being incentivized as well. The reality of the situation is that there isn't nearly the demand for a full featured small phone that comes with the penalty of being a full featured (price) small phone (reduced battery capacity) as the very vocal promoters made it out to be. Apple made a mistake... now it's course correcting.

I find this hard to believe.

3% is way lower than I ever expected.

Anyway, I’ll hold on to my 13 Mini until, hopefully, they make the Mini the new “SE”. If not, I guess my next phone will be an SE?

Actually, I could use the regular Mini (had an XR previously). My wife though…
