Apple will discontinue the first-generation iPhone X when the second-generation model launches later this year, rather than bump the device down its smartphone lineup for lower than $999, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who clarified his earlier prediction with a follow-up research note today.

Kuo said that Apple keeping the current iPhone X in its smartphone lineup for a reduced price, such as $899, would likely cannibalize sales of the mid-range 6.1-inch iPhone with Face ID and a LCD display that he expects to launch in the second half of 2018 for between $650 and $750 in the United States.

An excerpt from Kuo's research note obtained by MacRumors on Monday:If accurate, Apple's smartphone lineup later in 2018 would consist of the second-generation 5.8-inch iPhone X, which will likely remain $999, a larger 6.5-inch version dubbed iPhone X Plus, and the mid-range 6.1-inch iPhone. Below that would likely be iPhone 8, iPhone 7, and iPhone SE models.

Here's how Apple's new iPhone lineup could look:

o iPhone SE: $349
o iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: $449 and $569
o iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus: $549 and $669
o 6.1-inch iPhone with Face ID: $649 or $749
o 5.8-inch second-generation iPhone X: $999
o 6.5-inch second-generation iPhone X Plus: $1,099

That lineup is a ****ing mess.

Is there any phone on the market where the earhole/phone speaker is on the side of the phone and not the front? I’ve never heard of that.

I’m guessing the future of sub-screen earhole/speakers would be some sort of vibration-based, Jawbone-like inductive hearing tech, not an earhole on the side. I can’t see how that would work without broadcasting your call to nearby people and making it harder for the user to hear their own call.

I know, I didn't think about it until right after posting, but i assumed you would point it out anyway...

I only was thinking about the media speaker and the mic. Though i guess it would be manageable somehow, although not in a satisfying way. Maybe with muffled sound ^^

But at least it's just one thing to think about then. Maybe just a tiny mic-like hole on the very top...

Bottom line of my Post: I don't need as many frontfacing tech on my smartphone as there is atm, not one bit :/

And if Apple would box what comes out of that nose, they would line up to pay any price for it.

And spin how it's the best _________ ever

And proactively whine about how long it will be until Samesung starts boxing _________

All ;)

They really thought poo emoji was enough to make people buy an ultra expensive phone with an ugly notch.

Not at all... but a talking poo emoji, now that's an entirely different proposition ;)

I never made an analogy, I was informing... Looks like you need some reading skills yourself. lol
You can’t be serious. Your original post was an attempt to make an analogy between the car industry and Apple’s iPhone rollouts.

It’s fine if you don’t understand what an analogy is—there are always certain random words that even highly educated, highly intelligent people don’t know. But standard procedure would be to look up a word you’re unsure of in the dictionary, before rushing back onto a public forum and trying to lecture someone else about something you don’t understand.

I already mentioned that because of the iPhone X’s larger footprint, it includes dual cameras. So of course it will continue to have dual cameras even when the iPhone X Plus comes out.

You wrote “better cameras” but the only relevant distinction is that Plus models all have bigger cameras. It’s not like Apple simply upgraded the quality of the cameras in the larger phones, in order to punish users of smaller phones. They put in bigger cameras that, based on the laws of physics, have characteristics and specs that smaller cameras don’t have. Samsung is doing the same thing, with dual cameras only available on their big versions of their new models.

The paranoia that Apple is somehow sabotaging smaller iPhones to get people to buy larger phones is getting out of hand. Other than size-related components, the larger phones have always the exact same quality hardware as their smaller counterparts.

I'm sorry. Didn't realize that the immutable LAWS OF PHYSICS dictated aesthetic design choices. I thought that Apple could have made a slightly larger camera bump to accommodate the slightly larger optically stabilized camera module in the 6/6s plus vs the 6/6s. Or made similar compromises in the 7/8 series, since, as you point out, a smaller form factor can support a dual camera module. Now I know that figuring out how to make a minor change to a phone's casing would be on par with inventing teleportation.

I thought that Apple was trying to confer value-based pricing along with its product differentiation, but it turns out that it was the only decision they could make without DESTROYING THE FABRIC OF OUR REALITY.

It's not sabotaging, sure, but it's disappointing to say the least, to see competition proudly advertising that they don't discriminate features between sizes (Pixel2) and pull off better photos with just one camera for that matter...then yeah, I get why people get upset and call it that.

Let's recap: "You're just jealous." "The X is not a Beta Device." "Apple would never do that." "You always say crap like this."

The article speaks for itself. I applaud all who had the ability to not drink the Kool Aid and wait for Gen 2. :apple:

I don't believe it. Would they engineer, design, tool up and only build the phone for one year?

I was seriously thinking about getting an iPhone X this year, but I'm rethinking the purchase and might just for a iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black instead.

Wait and see what the XI brings unless your phone can’t survive much longer.

Completely makes sense to not have too many premium SKUs.

Yes. Being A Beta Product should increase it's value over 30 years. :apple:

They really thought poo emoji was enough to make people buy an ultra expensive phone with an ugly notch. SJ must be spinning

The spinning stopped quite a while ago. Not too long after the rolling ended. He is laying face down currently. :apple:

It's not a beta.

It works as great as any other current flagship and the next gen will work great as well. Nothing about this feels like a beta product. Easily the best iphone I have ever used for good reason.

Just don't make me have to get a bigger phone to have the best features.

That’s right, correct priced, if too expensive for some people- Apple have cheaper models also. I hope 2018 iPhone… will be in similar price with maybe some new futures

what true test? once they have bought the devices thats it. Hell apple sold 78 million iphones the quarter before the new released iphones last year.

Iphones will continue to sell throughout the year. Thats hardly new

The topic now is when the new iphone X 2018 is out this one will go and they are doing that so it remains the premium iphone you can buy.

The true test to how many units will sell to the common folks (the non-diehard fans) after the initial wave. Will it level off slowly like the other releases or will it cliff dive.

It's getting to that "size" stage where there is now little difference than few years ago with phones... you gotta make a choice what to do

And, looks like Apple just made theirs.
