Here's how Apple's new iPhone lineup could look:

o iPhone SE: $349
o iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: $449 and $569
o iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus: $549 and $669
o 6.1-inch iPhone with Face ID: $649 or $749
o 5.8-inch second-generation iPhone X: $999
o 6.5-inch second-generation iPhone X Plus: $1,099

Article Link: KGI: Apple to Discontinue iPhone X Rather Than Sell at Lower Price When Second-Generation Model Launches

This is sounding more asinine as the months go by.

Apple to make a second Gen 5.8” X iPhone and release a 6.1” and larger 6.5”?!

Apple should stop selling the iPhone 7 barely any incentive a second year others than price. It’ll further eat into asp as they have a lower asp than the iPhone 8 does. And the second tear iphobe 8 has wireless charging and higher incentives or equal incentives at same storage options for carriers as the 7 will: 32GB Free on 2yr contract, 128GB $129 on 2yr contract vs 8 having 64GB free maybe better yet not many will want a 2yr + old phone with much lower resale after the first year is up.

This would make sense. Keep the X line premium, especially when you still have plenty of other models to fill the lower end

So the iPhone X will become a collectors item

The X I believe is only meant to be an anniversary edition model. Premium yes but a second year with same technology no advancement ... sales will drop as users will feel like “really Apple is this the best you can do the second year ina row?!”

Dangerous slope for a premium price gamble that isn’t capturing users minds so heavily as before.

3 models (iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and the X) combined as sharing close to, not equal to, the sales revenue as the iPhone 7!! This with brand new technology, better cameras and screen (the X)! Thus speaks heavily about pricing vs saturation of exitsting customer lineup. Apple is going to need to fight harder to keep existing and win new customers. Remember Android units globally also went up as well as Samsung. We’ll see what happens after MWC 2018 announcement.

Bye bye iPhone 5 mark 2

#RushJob
At least this time around they warned everybody it was a rush job. I believe it was Schiller that said they released it a year early, and only took a year to go from paper to package.

They really thought poo emoji was enough to make people buy an ultra expensive phone with an ugly notch. SJ must be spinning

Well, it has been enough (along with everything else the phone does). No reason for you and others to suffer from constant delusions.

you mean the millions and millions who have bought it and like it?

The design is great. Better than that 5 year old design on the 8 and 8 plus

You always have the first wave of people that just buy anything Apple. Those numbers are a bit deceiving since they are the diehard fans. Once that passes, it's the true test.... which is the topic now.

I often thought about this lately and honestly, I totally could live without front camera, since i never ever take selfies, AND without light sensor, since i prefer to adjust the brightness by myself. (Also, it could be on the back)

Speakers are the least problem, since they are already facing to the side in most phones.

Only the proximity sensor would be a possible issue, but I'm sure there is a way around it or maybe it could be placed on the side or something...

TADAAA: There is your notch- and bezelless phone ^^ :)

And the girl version still could have some kind of unfoldable front-cam on a lid on the back...or maybe coming out like the flash in some digital cameras.

I definitely would buy it. Though a phone unable to make selfies will not happen in generation Instagram :(
Is there any phone on the market where the earhole/phone speaker is on the side of the phone and not the front? I’ve never heard of that.

I’m guessing the future of sub-screen earhole/speakers would be some sort of vibration-based, Jawbone-like inductive hearing tech, not an earhole on the side. I can’t see how that would work without broadcasting your call to nearby people and making it harder for the user to hear their own call.

what true test? once they have bought the devices thats it. Hell apple sold 78 million iphones the quarter before the new released iphones last year.

Iphones will continue to sell throughout the year. Thats hardly new

The topic now is when the new iphone X 2018 is out this one will go and they are doing that so it remains the premium iphone you can buy.

Not so much research, but as first hand experience as I bought a new body style 2004 that lasted me 11 years and 211,000 miles until it bit the dust (due to my lack of timely maintenance). The new model was a big step in frame, chassis and such, but not a big jump in price. They did continue to make the old body style for the whole year and it was on their website to build. Why sell both? Idk, but I'm sure they had a reason.
Sounds like the sudden jump in size/chassis was the reason.

Excited to move on from the X this fall. Simply too much for a phone IMO. I will either get this 6.1" iPhone or a base model iPhone 8.

Hmm well this basically means 1000 set price for the standard iPhone, the model that will have the same features as the a galaxy series which will cost half the price! And then we’ll have the X Plus no doubt starting from 1200 or 1300..

I’ll just get an X on sale when the retailers are clearing out stock. If Apple ditch it.

Apple under Cook and co sure have become incredibly greedy..

Yes, because the iPhone X and the current Galaxy totally have the "same features," and yes, new Galaxy phones totally start at $499 ("half the price").

It's pathetic when people type outright lies just to justify their wild, lazy anti-Apple ramblings.

Amazingly Apple continues to drop the ball like they are Samsung. The awful notch iPhone X has been a disaster since launch. Fragmentation is the next issue they will experience with the power management debacle.

"The awful notch iPhone X has been a disaster since launch."

This is a complete and utter delusion supported by not a single fact.

This seems similar to what happened to the Series 2 Apple Watch....That was phased out after only 1 year.

A better camera. Like all of the plus models released until now.
I already mentioned that because of the iPhone X’s larger footprint, it includes dual cameras. So of course it will continue to have dual cameras even when the iPhone X Plus comes out.

You wrote “better cameras” but the only relevant distinction is that Plus models all have bigger cameras. It’s not like Apple simply upgraded the quality of the cameras in the larger phones, in order to punish users of smaller phones. They put in bigger cameras that, based on the laws of physics, have characteristics and specs that smaller cameras don’t have. Samsung is doing the same thing, with dual cameras only available on their big versions of their new models.

The paranoia that Apple is somehow sabotaging smaller iPhones to get people to buy larger phones is getting out of hand. Other than size-related components, the larger phones have always the exact same quality hardware as their smaller counterparts.

Depends on the market. $699 USD can still get you a phone w/ many of the modern iPhone amenities (processor, TrueTone display, quick charging, wireless charging, IP67 water resistance, etc). If you want the best of the best, $1000 seems to be that sweet spot. Meanwhile Samsung could undercut Apple with its aggressive promos and still struggle with Apple. Some people pay for the software and logo rather than go for the most cost effective solution since the solution may not be the ideal solution.

Samsung offered the S8 at launch at just over half the cost of the X.... retail price! And it has the same features.

I bet the S9 adds dual lens camera and stereo speakers. And still cost the same.

More RAM please. Tired of Apps having to reload when I go back to them. 3GB on a $1K phone is a cheap move.

This happens with:
Safari
Facebook
Instagram
Etc

Regardless of background processing enabled. It’s just the nature of the app wanting to give you the latest ads and feeds to the top when accessed. The only way around this is if you’ve received no updates to feeds on your account and no ads where updated OR you have absolutely no data connectivity.

RAM becomes a secondary factor.

Do you not know how this works by now? In about May, rumors will fly of some kind of iPhone X Magical Mega with a rumored price of (about) $1499... followed by another rumor also suggesting $1499... and then maybe one or two more in the weeks leading up to the big reveal. The rumors get us through the "I will never pay that much" outrage without actually costing Apple any sales, shifting us into nearly acceptance, except maybe still clinging to the idea that we won't pay that much for a phone. Nevertheless, one of our kidneys is probably listed on CL just in case we can't bare to NOT pay whatever the mothership asks for a new phone.

Then Apple takes the stage, reveals the new "it" with a few new features not available on prior phones, some software gee-whiz, maybe some kind of gimmicky feature only the kiddies will love too. Everyone will expect the $1499 price because the rumors have us pretty much there. Then Apple reveals "only $1200" to a big sigh of relief and applause.

Immediately afterwards, cue the gushing at getting all of that for "only $1200" mixed with some, "I was thinking it might even go to $1999 but was fully expecting $1500. I can't believe I can get it for 'only $1200.' What a bargain!" and "Shut up and take my money."

Any remaining price-shocked naysayers should be met with the monthly payment argument: "only $8.33 more per month" (over 24 months) and just the usual beat down if that doesn't shut them down.

Next year: about May rumors imply the next, next "it" at $1999. Repeat sequence of events, concluding with us gushing we're getting that iPhone Xss for "only $1499"... "Shut up and take my money."

In both cases, we're all (self) hyped up such that we drag ourselves out of bed trying to give Apple "only $1200" and then "only $1499" at 3am in the morning. We may be missing a kidney and/or sending BarclayCard Executives to Hawaii again (or maybe they get to finally BUY one of the Hawaiian Islands this time) but WE MUST HAVE THAT NEW IPHONE. MUST, MUST, MUST!

Price-shocked naysayers at $1499 vs. $1200 are met with "only $12.45 more" per month (over 24 months) or "even better!!! only $8.31 more per month on the new (improved?) 36-month plan."

And subsequent to both, Apple reports "best quarter ever" and we write in countless threads "...but who makes the most profitable smart phone" and "$XXX Billion in the bank can't be wrong" as we march towards the time when we find ourselves paying $2499 ("only $8.33 more per month on the new 120-month payment plan") and then $2999 ("only $8.33 more on the new 180-month payment plan") for a smart phone, mostly because Apple wants to beat all prior records, and we'll pretty much pay anything if they apply the same formula to the marketing campaign.

There's lots of ;) in the above, but we know there's also underlying truths in there too.

Can you name any examples of this actually happening?

I have a feeling Apple will use the same camera module for both the regular and Plus models this time (like with the iPhone 6/6 Plus). Apple knows that people paying excessive premium prices for the non-Plus model won’t like it at all if they don’t get a top of the line camera. The larger display should be incentive enough for people interested in the Plus model and hopefully just a $100 markup over the regular model which hopefully will be $100-200 less than current prices. Some minor tweaks for the current camera in the X.

As a lifelong Cubs fan I’m used to embracing irrational hope in the face of overwhelming odds. And if the math plays out, Apple will allow greater customization on their 108th anniversary.

Different strokes, I suppose.

Good lord, read. I said manufacture, not sell.

And while car companies often only make subtle changes in a given calendar year, so does Apple! They both make slight changes to the name (2018 Mustang, iPhone 6s) with slight upgrades to the current product.

The difference is, car companies do not continue to manufacture and sell the previous year’s model while also making and selling the current year’s model. Car companies never manufacture completely unchanged 2017 Mustangs and 2016 Mustangs alongside brand new 2018 Mustangs.

Your anology was bankrupt.

I never made an analogy, I was informing... Looks like you need some reading skills yourself. lol

£500 or €500? Or you meant $500? I remember the S8 cost like $700 or so. They included a free VR headset or 256gb SD card.

It has mostly similar features. I can’t do continuity, iMessage, FaceTime, have faster software updates, better apps, etc.

Samsung has its fair share of issues as well.

It can die messaging and video calling and continuity as well. They aren’t exclusive Apple features, and video calling and messaging certainly weren’t invented by Apple!
If I remember it was around 600 in the UK, the X is 1000.

The X is then the premium platform. If the premium platform keeps introducing new features as big as Face ID, OLED, all screen-- then keep going. It's a way to encourage Apple to keep the R&D going. The first buyers will not mind paying premium, and it's coming to the rest of the line a year or two later.
