Bad parallel. Jokes are only funny when the’re based on truth. Name a single car company that has ever continued to manufacture the previous year’s model while their current year’s model was being made and sold?

Can’t? That’s because they don’t.

If true, it indeed would be news and a break from precedent if Apple stopped making their previous year’s model and selling it at a lower price.

Are you serious? Every car manufacturer makes the same car for a generation with only slight changes; that generation could be a 4 or 5 year period. And every car manufacturer sells the new model year right along with the older model year until sold out.

Notifications and control center in the upper corners of a very tall (for one handed use) display were awkward. (I think Apple could have given users a toggle to move those to the lower corners of the display?)
This could be better, for sure. Too tall for one hand. Apple would get points from me if they gave users more options for configuring things their own way.

I hate my iPhone X, damn I got one. I have been so careful not falling into any Apple scam product and I felt into this one.
Apple provided the specs and costs before-hand. There were also reviews to glean over, as well as the 14 day purchase trial. You proceeded with the purchase.

You need to look up the word scam, as it appears you don't know the correct definition and usage.

Again, not sure sure you’re grasping what assumption means in colloquial use. What assumption did I make? You literally chaffed at my responses, which were neither personal nor derogatory, and then demanded I never reply to another one of your posts! I didn’t make an “assumption” that you were touchy because you were clearly, observably touchy.

You aren’t really using the word “ironic” prudently, either. How it is “ironic” if the person you (wrongly) claim to be making egregious assumptions makes a another statement that you think is an assumption? That would actually be “following suit”. It would be ironic if you were to make an assumption.

After all that that you failed to respond to my questions, preferring to comment on our discussion rather than actually having it.

I sum up your post: gibberish.

ApplePay was horrible in comparison to TouchID (in my opinion). Instead of grabbing my phone and holding the phone with my thumb on the home button (which "just works" for me), I had to double-click the side button, then make sure I was looking at my phone at the right distance and angle, then confirm that it had ID'd me, then finally move the phone to the reader. It felt like a lot of steps with some opportunities for error that TouchID didn't present.
I also liked TouchID for Apple Pay in retail locations. Felt easy and “right”. For me one of the things that feels most awkward about FaceID at retail is the fact that I hold my phone with my left hand, and it’s awkward trying to hit the right side button without also pressing the left side volume up/down buttons. The process gets better for me each time I use it, though, the more I realize that I don’t need to hold my phone that close to the payment reader.

I do hope they adjust the side button placement for next year’s models. I’m tired of taking screen shots for no reason :)

Ford. When the new body style hit in 2004, they sold the new body style and the old body style for the same model year at the same time. The old body style was named the F-150 Heritage. It was only one year of course. But still, it is an example. And no, they have't done it since. Nor can I think of anyone else.

Do you not know how this works by now? In about May, rumors will fly of some kind of iPhone X Magical Mega with a rumored price of (about) $1499... followed by another rumor also suggesting $1499... and then maybe one or two more in the weeks leading up to the big reveal. The rumors get us through the "I will never pay that much" outrage without actually costing Apple any sales, shifting us into nearly acceptance, except maybe still clinging to the idea that we won't pay that much for a phone. Nevertheless, one of our kidneys is probably listed on CL just in case we can't bare to NOT pay whatever the mothership asks for a new phone.

Then Apple takes the stage, reveals the new "it" with a few new features not available on prior phones, some software gee-whiz, maybe some kind of gimmicky feature only the kiddies will love too. Everyone will expect the $1499 price because the rumors have us pretty much there. Then Apple reveals "only $1200" to a big sigh of relief and applause.

Immediately afterwards, cue the gushing at getting all of that for "only $1200" mixed with some, "I was thinking it might even go to $1999 but was fully expecting $1500. I can't believe I can get it for 'only $1200.' What a bargain!" and "Shut up and take my money."

Any remaining price shocked-naysayers should be met with the monthly payment argument: "only $8.33 more per month" (over 24 months) and just the usual beat down if that doesn't shut them down.

Next year: about May rumors imply the next, next "it" at $1999. Repeat sequence of events, concluding with us gushing we're getting that iPhone Xss for "only $1499"... "Shut up and take my money."

In both cases, we're all (self) hyped up such that we drag ourselves out of bed trying to give Apple "only $1200" and then "only $1499" at 3am in the morning. We may be missing a kidney and/or sending BarclayCard Executives to Hawaii again (or maybe they get to finally BUY one of the Hawaiian Islands this time) but WE MUST HAVE THAT NEW IPHONE. MUST, MUST, MUST!

Price-shocked naysayers at $1499 vs. $1200 are met with "only $12.45 more" per month (over 24 months) or "even better!!! only $8.31 more per month on the new (improved?) 36-month plan."

And subsequent to both, Apple reports "best quarter ever" and we write in countless threads "...but who makes the most profitable smart phone" and "$XXX Billion in the bank can't be wrong" as we march towards the time when we find ourselves paying $2499 ("only $8.33 more per month on the new 120-month payment plan") and then $2999 ("only $8.33 more on the new 180-month payment plan") for a smart phone, mostly because Apple wants to beat all prior records, and we'll pretty much pay anything if they apply the same formula to the marketing campaign.

There's lots of ;) in the above, but we know there's also underlying truths in there too.
Apple definitely had a conversation years ago about how to counter the longer average upgrade cycle (2 years - 3 years ): $1000 phone was their answer. And it's "totally worth it, because I plan on keeping it 3-4 years" or "I don't upgrade very often, so it makes sense".

Apple knows how to sell ;)

Unlocking was a two-hand drill for me. I realize that Rise to Wake could have solved that but I've always turned that off (battery insecurity). Grab phone with left hand, tap with right hand, swipe up with right hand.
Can’t back you up on that one. I actually love raise to wake, and feel like opening the iPhone X is actually faster and better.

In general, I too hope that the great new ideas in iPhone X will continue to evolve and get better in the next iteration. As Apple typically does.

[Also, sorry that my responses have all appeared as separate posts! I thought they’d all glom together but, alas.]

Apple became so short-sighted now, they only think they could make a huge pile of cash with the X, but didn't think of the aftermath...

If the premium line is at 1300$, i won't buy Apple anymore and i refuse to buy a second class iPhone where every features is just cut by sofwtare and a few hardware miss... i will buy the top android for 800$..

They are greedy ***king shareholders, they really ruin everything

So if Apple likely releases a "second class iPhone" as you described, what would you consider the top android? Google Pixel, Galaxy Note?

Only Google can match the software update frequency Apple gives customers, so you may have limited choices on the Android side.

i love my iPhone X easily the best iPhone yet, Face ID works really well i don't miss Touch ID and the screen is just brilliant when watching HDR movies. If there is nothing major added to the 2018 lineup, it's just a bigger version then i will stick with my iPhone X.

I do think that with Apple doing a bigger 6.5" iPhone X Plus that they could also do a smaller Apple Pencil and make it a Note competitor.

Never going to happen on an Apple device.
As a lifelong Cubs fan I’m used to embracing irrational hope in the face of overwhelming odds. And if the math plays out, Apple will allow greater customization on their 108th anniversary.

And I would gladly deal with a bigger phone and asymmetrical bezels (just a top bezel) if I could get a 6’4inch screen iphone with no notch at all, and a fingerprint scanner on the back (until under the screen fp scanner is ready)
Different strokes, I suppose.

Good lord, read. I said manufacture, not sell.

And while car companies often only make subtle changes in a given calendar year, so does Apple! They both make slight changes to the name (2018 Mustang, iPhone 6s) with slight upgrades to the current product.

The difference is, car companies do not continue to manufacture and sell the previous year’s model while also making and selling the current year’s model. Car companies never manufacture completely unchanged 2017 Mustangs and 2016 Mustangs alongside brand new 2018 Mustangs.

Your anology was bankrupt.

The iPhone X and it's notch will become a collectors item, like the Ford Pinto and its gas tank.

While I think it's unlikely that the iPhone X will become a collector's item (There are just too many of them out there) the Pinto absolutely is a collector's item at this point, a Pinto in excellent condition sells for much more than it did new.

Unfortunately this is what happens when the market is mature and average selling price needs to go up. Personally, I would absolutely love an X style treatment in the iPhone SE style casing.
Once smartphones start to really supplant desktops and laptops, I foresee premium phone prices taking up those niches. $2,000 and up for a high-end iPhone in a decade is pretty likely IMO.

Are you familiar with the iPhone X? It already has dual cameras and optical image stabilization. What feature, other than a bigger battery, could a plus model even have?

You made it sound like there is nothing Apple can do to differentiate its products other than battery size.

How is the flagship iPhone X a joke? It's been my favorite iPhone to date and I have owned several different models.

It's great that you like it, but plenty of people in this thread are making fun of it. Not to mention Samsung mocking the notch in their Note 8 commercial. I think that the lack of compelling features, the high price, and widespread issues with iOS 11 are driving customers away. Evidently, Apple agrees.

Good research! Clearly an exception to normal auto industry practices, but interesting nonetheless. Do you know if they continued to make the old model, or if they were just selling overstock?

Also, do you know why they did it? Was there a huge change to the new model, or a big price hike, such that they felt the need to offer a transition or bridge for certain, more traditional or conservative customers?

Apple will discontinue the first-generation iPhone X when the second-generation model launches later this year, rather than bump the device down its smartphone lineup for lower than $999, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who clarified his earlier prediction with a follow-up research note today.

iphone-x-silver.jpg

Kuo said that Apple keeping the current iPhone X in its smartphone lineup for a reduced price, such as $899, would likely cannibalize sales of the mid-range 6.1-inch iPhone with Face ID and a LCD display that he expects to launch in the second half of 2018 for between $650 and $750 in the United States.

An excerpt from Kuo's research note obtained by MacRumors on Monday:If accurate, Apple's smartphone lineup later in 2018 would consist of the second-generation 5.8-inch iPhone X, which will likely remain $999, a larger 6.5-inch version dubbed iPhone X Plus, and the mid-range 6.1-inch iPhone. Below that would likely be iPhone 8, iPhone 7, and iPhone SE models.

Here's how Apple's new iPhone lineup could look:

o iPhone SE: $349
o iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: $449 and $569
o iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus: $549 and $669
o 6.1-inch iPhone with Face ID: $649 or $749
o 5.8-inch second-generation iPhone X: $999
o 6.5-inch second-generation iPhone X Plus: $1,099

Until cameras, sensors and speakers can be buried under a usable screen, the notch is a physical necessity. Would you rather lose the screen real estate and have bezel all the way across the top? I wouldn’t.

I often thought about this lately and honestly, I totally could live without front camera, since i never ever take selfies, AND without light sensor, since i prefer to adjust the brightness by myself. (Also, it could be on the back)

Speakers are the least problem, since they are already facing to the side in most phones.

Only the proximity sensor would be a possible issue, but I'm sure there is a way around it or maybe it could be placed on the side or something...

TADAAA: There is your notch- and bezelless phone ^^ :)

And the girl version still could have some kind of unfoldable front-cam on a lid on the back...or maybe coming out like the flash in some digital cameras.

I definitely would buy it. Though a phone unable to make selfies will not happen in generation Instagram :(

Not so much research, but as first hand experience as I bought a new body style 2004 that lasted me 11 years and 211,000 miles until it bit the dust (due to my lack of timely maintenance). The new model was a big step in frame, chassis and such, but not a big jump in price. They did continue to make the old body style for the whole year and it was on their website to build. Why sell both? Idk, but I'm sure they had a reason.
