That would be nice, but it seems we can only hope for internal updates on the current SE model. I am still using the iPhone 6 (acquired 3 years ago) and I have never liked the fact that it's a much larger phone than I ever had before. But I did not "upgrade" to the SE when it first came out. Now the SE will be 2 years old in Spring 2018, so I am hoping they will at least update the chip inside of it and then I'll upgrade from the 6 to the SE.

I just did this exact thing due to the screen shattering (again) in my iPhone 6. The upgrade from the 6 to the SE has been incredible. A substantial boost in speed, and I can actually use the thing one-handed again. Between buying the SE used and fixing and selling my 6, I only ended up spending like $75. Highly recommend.

The X Plus will be $1200 most likely. I had an 6S Plus for over 2 years and now I really enjoy the size of the X. Not sure if I'd want to switch back to a bigger device, but time will tell. Apple used to equip the Plus models with better cameras, so it was always a priority on my list, but now the X has all those premium features. It will be interesting to see what the X Plus will offer beside the screen size to justify that price tag.

I understand the shift to larger displays and that transition has been growing for years.

However, you're not correct to say "Only diehard SE users think it makes sense." I did own the SE at one point and in doing so, I realized you don't care about having the latest technology in the SE, you care about the form factor And the comfortability when holding it and carrying it. You don't have to be a "diehard" SE owner to know and appreciate the 4 inch form factor.

Any SE user knows they receive the essentials with Touch ID and a strong battery in a well made iPhone, and that's all that most ask for in the SE, regardless if it's updated in 2018 or not.

I can understand women liking the larger phones because they have purses. I cannot understand guys wanting a huge phone. Where the hell do you put it when you're walking around? The iPhone 6 is bad enough for me. I can't imagine the Plus versions or the large phones mentioned in today's report.

$649-$749 is considered low-end to mid-range? LOL!

It's the smaller 5.8" OLED for me. I think Apple will compromise the smaller one again but will lower the price to maybe $850-$900. The bigger OLED XL gets all the best features and be priced over $1000-$1200.

The current X needs a few hardware improvements...

- Improve camera esp the front
- Brighter display, increase the nits
- Better viewing angles
- Much faster wired or wireless charging
- Lower the weight (174g is too heavy)
- More color options than only two

Not to mention all the software improvements it needs like split-view and PiP that iPads and Androids already have.

Four-year design cycles. Every two years for a minor refresh. Think high school. Chillax, current X beta testers. The iPhone always improves every single year. The beta testers just happen to pay the most for it like early video game console adopters with crappy launch titles because they wanted it early.

I'll be finding out how much I value the larger screen here once my X completes its long journey from Asia (package tracking makes this excruciating... What's taking so long, Incheon?! Get your act together and move that package!).

I find myself gravitating toward the iPad for anything that needs screen, and desiring portability otherwise. I've been clinging to my 5-not-S all these years because I like the size. Trying the bigger phone because all the cool kids have them, but not sure I'll be happy with the change.

All I really need is a small communications brick with a good camera. Is it big enough to type a text message, display a boarding pass and take a quick picture when my real camera is at home? That's probably all I need.

That's fine if Apple wants to make a larger one and charge more for it.

But there needs to be feature-parity across the OLED models. After the X, no one is going to buy the argument that some special camera improvement can only be unique to the 6.5" model.

I only ever bought the Plus models for the camera, and I'm ecstatic that the X has come down to reality with a usable size AND all of the hardware Apple can dish out.

I'm never, ever going to buy a 6.5" iPhone and I will be extremely irritated if I'm missing out on camera or other hardware features because Apple chose to make them unique to the "premium" model.

100% agree. I don't opt for the Plus models because they are just too big, but I really want those dual cameras and have been tempted. The X is even too large for my tastes, but I'm likely going to end up getting one next year if there doesn't end up being a smaller iPhone with the same cameras (which I don't expect to happen).

I like what Google has done with the Pixel line - the smaller one has the same quality camera and the only real difference between the two models is the screen and battery size. I wish Apple would do the same. But I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone X Plus has 3 rear cameras or some other bonus feature(s).

the future is SAMSUNG STYLEEEE

So wrong. They are making features exclusive for the larger phone (dual lens) that force people to buy the larger (ie more expensive) model. I know plenty of people who buy the Plus only for the dual lens wishing they could get it in a smaller package.

I’m sorry but do you really know people that did that? If so they need to put the kool aid down.

I’ve had regular size phones while my wife has has plus size phones. I bought the X and she just got the 8 Plus.

The iPhone X that I have now and the iPhone 7 do not take that drastically different photos. Or my wife’s phones vs mine.

These devices are all so great we are DEFINITELY at the point of diminishing returns. There is just NOT an astronomical difference in what any of them do from one another.

My point is this... stop obsessing over specs on a sheet and all these tech reviews that have to justify their jobs and look a real world differences.

If you adore the regular size get it! Don’t buy a phone you don’t like because of a .03 improvement in camera quality.

So very glad I held off and didn’t buy the X this year.
I don't get that mentality. The X Plus will be essentially the same thing but bigger and a little improved in different areas. It's hardly going to be the type of experience (by comparison to the original X) that is worth waiting a year for. The X in like-new condition will fetch 70% of the retail value easily when selling next September. iPhone's have insane resale value, unlike any other technological device I've ever seen. Use that money towards the X+. For a few hundred dollars you're missing out on using one of the best phones on the market everyday for a year, but that's just me. I bought the X and will 100% buy the X+ in September, but I never once thought about 'waiting' just because I'd prefer a bit of a bigger screen.

Not on the lower chin where the display control board lies.
iPhone X oled U-bends upward to achieve chinlessness.
LCD can’t do that.

That’s a design decision to put the camera in a bezel.

JDI, which is Apple’s main supplier of LCD unveiled a thin bezel display more than a year ago. And yes, LCDs can bend. JDI proved that as well.

Good luck, guinea pig beta tester crash dummies who buy the Plus-sized phone next year. Thanks to my higher intellect, I’ll be waiting until 2019 when all the kinks have been ironed out. That’ll be the REAL iPhone to get! So glad I’m waiting.

Coming from an 8+ to the X was both difficult and underwhelming. I have stuck with it though. Battery life is much worse.

Coming from a non-plus 7, I imagine I would have been blown away.

For all those people saying you don't need the bigger screen as its now mathematically bigger - its only TALLER. Its also much slimmer. So you don't get 'plus' sized features. And I LOVE typing on my plus.

I can't wait for this 6.5" phone - same size as my plus, much bigger screen, much better battery life. Please don't make us wait till September.

If the notch is the best Apple can do, the future looks bleak. I guess Apple is “all in” with the notch.

Plus version fits fine in the pocket of a typical pair of men's slacks. Jeans are tighter, of course, but that's true for any device larger than a set of car keys.

As one who has owns the larger iPhones to date, it's not comfortable, but you get used to it. I see it as that's the sacrifice you make for wanting a larger iPhone like the Plus model, it is cumbersome and takes significant room in your pocket. For me, it's just a way of adapting to the downfall of having a larger iPhone.

Sorry, I'm not wrong. See that big ass bezel on the bottom of the Xiaomi? Yeah, that's because phone LCDs require at least one large bezel on one side for the backlighting components.

That’s a design decision.

See my post about JDI’s full active LCD display.

I would really prefer Apple released a smaller version of the X. I tried to take the leap to a larger phone a couple years back and ended up going back to my 5S/upgraded when the SE came out. If Apple abandons the smaller form factor and there's no further updates to something like the SE, that will make the move to Android that much easier of a decision for me. My wife recently got the Pixel 2 and it's awesome.

If I ultimately have to go with a larger phone, I'll for sure leave Apple. The only thing keeping me at this point is that they offer a smaller sized phone. However, they better do something by the Spring for the SE or a similar sized phone, otherwise it'll be time to go.

I wear golf pants (khaki color) to work and the regular iPhone 6 does not fit very well for me. I tend to not even put it in my pocket unless I'm wearing jeans.

I am still waiting for my iPhone X. If the X+ with the same footprint as the 7/8+ will come out next year, I might consider getting it.
what about mid-end users that don't want a 6+" screen?

I doubt that Apple will forget those that still prefer smaller screen size.
