IPS is a type of TFT-LCD. I doubt Apple would release a TN panel on a new iPhone in 2018 if that's what you are worried about.

No, I know the difference, but you won't find many articles that compare IPS and TFT and don't find IPS (as on the current Plus) to be superior. Nonetheless, if this is the direction Apple goes with the lower-end model, I'll hope it has some "special Apple touches" to improve it, just as the IPS-LCD on the Plus does. And, anyway, that's next October's First World Problem. :)

PPI on OLED is measured differently than LCD.

You need more PPI on OLED to achieve the same sharpness as LCD.

For instance the X has lower real PPI than the Plus. Take the OLED PPI and multiply by 2/3. PenTile OLED pixels is defined as 2 sub pixels. LCD pixels is defined as 3 sub pixels.

That's an oversimplification and not accurate. The iPhone X display has sub-pixel densities of 458 SPPI for green and 324 SPPI for red and blue, meaning its true pixel density is somewhere between 324 and 458 PPI depending on what colors are being shown. For example, if green is the only color being shown, then the pixel density is directly comparable to LCDs, and the iPhone X will look sharper than the current Plus, which is 401 PPI. The matter is further complicated by the fact that Apple is using sub-pixel anti-aliasing on the iPhone X, meaning pixels can share their red and blue sub-pixels with neighboring pixels to improve the appearance of edges, meaning even the red and blue sub-pixel density is going to look sharper than 324 PPI. It's a very complicated thing, but the "real" PPI of the iPhone X is probably near 400 PPI on average (again, depending on what is being displayed) with the help of sub-pixel anti-aliasing, so there's really no discernible difference in sharpness between the X and the current Plus.

I don’t think Apple will offer a “cheaper” option as the iPhone X design language is supposed to represent the “ultimate” iPhone. Offering a cheaper looking X degrades the “premium” look of the X.

The current X eliminated 4.7" models for good but demoted the LCD Plus ones as the budget one.

High tier - OLED XL
Mid tier - OLED X
Low tier - LCD Plus

Since when is $650-$750 budget-friendly?

I personally want silver banding on ALL color options next year. I don't care about fingerprints and scratches. I want PREMIUM like seeing the first iPhone. The space gray X is too similar to the jb 7 and sg 8. Boring. Been there, done that. Blends in easily with other Androids if viewed from that angle...

Since when is the flagship model also the budget model? You need to look a little closer. Apple has iPhones starting at $399.

iPhone X Plus 6.5 inch
iPhone X 5.8 inch
iPhone X mini 5 inch
I’d like to see the love child between a regular iPhone X and iPhone SE!

An LCD with that sort of cutout would be... quite difficult, would it not? Would they artificially create one by simply blocking that part of the screen off? I didn't LCD screens could be made with those types of curves and such.

EDIT: Ah, I see someone answered that above. Carry on!

Apple already milked the premium consumers for 12 months with the X.

After that, Apple needs to standardize design language.

Not sure about this to be honest.

I think the reason the 8 Plus phones are currently out-selling the normal iPhone 8 has everything to do with features, e.g camera, battery life and resolution. The 8 is just a compromised phone, whereas the Plus gets you so much more. I dont think people want bigger phones for the sake of it.

If the same specs (from the Plus) were available in a smaller size, people would be all over it. This is the exact reason why everyone is raving about the X! Finally a full-fledged experience in a reasonably sized package.

So why go back to making Plus sized form factors again? I would like Apple to go the other way. Do more with less!

Truth be told, I actually think the X is still a bit too large to comfortably hold. Even more so with those stretched out corners, which you have to reach for notifications.

It would be much more interesting to see Apple make a 4.8" design out of a 4" form factor (just like the X is pretty much a 5.8" design from a 5" form factor), but maybe that's just me.

AND YES, I get that there are people who want the "Plus" experience with, so let's keep the 6.5. But why a 6.1"? Much better to make a 4.8 as the cheaper model.

I'll be finding out how much I value the larger screen here once my X completes its long journey from Asia (package tracking makes this excruciating... What's taking so long, Incheon?! Get your act together and move that package!).

I find myself gravitating toward the iPad for anything that needs screen, and desiring portability otherwise. I've been clinging to my 5-not-S all these years because I like the size. Trying the bigger phone because all the cool kids have them, but not sure I'll be happy with the change.

All I really need is a small communications brick with a good camera. Is it big enough to type a text message, display a boarding pass and take a quick picture when my real camera is at home? That's probably all I need.

I am in the same boat. I do have a 6s+ right now, too big for me. I use my phone as a phone and camera, I don't need the additional size. If I want to use email or browse the internet, I grab my iPad mini.

The so called iPhone X Plus will have a 6-1/2" SCREEN. It will get that size by eliminating the large top and bottom bezels of the current Plus iPhones. The device itself will be the same size physically as today's Plus sized phones. It'll just have a longer narrower screen like the current X model.

A good example of this is automotive dashboards with LCD gauges.

Audi has one that fits across the gauge cluster and has an even bigger notch than iPhone X.

True of the new IUP folks or those who paid cash. Like many of the IUP folks from last fall who did pre-approval although I got a 17-24 November date for a short time, by the day before Launch I went to November 6-9 and actually got my X on morning of November 6. I like the size for holding and use with almost one hand now. Will have to ponder if I give it up next fall for the "plus sized" X or not.

I'll provide my secret that's worked for me two years running (at the risk of having more people in front of me next year). I buy on preorder night as an all cash transaction but then I walk into the store the day I receive it and "return" it then repurchase the same device (I don't let it out of my hands :p ) as the upgrade to my existing IUP. No worries about the IUP getting in the way of preorders that way.

...and this is why I’m glad I skipped out on the X (while keeping my current 7 Plus another year). I want the plus sized phone, and 6.1” would be perfect. I’m happy with Apples LCD panels and if it has True Tone, even better

In defense of larger phones:
  • Some of us can't take both our phones and tablets with us everywhere we go.
  • Some of us aren't as young or as blessed with perfect vision as some of you lucky dogs.
  • Some of us have hands bigger than those of A Certain Famous Chief Executive :) and don't have a problem handling a larger phone.
However, as one who's married to someone who finds a Plus-sized model too big for her hands, I also fully sympathize with those for whom none of these arguments holds true, and believe Apple should keep an SE-sized model around for as long as possible. Whether it should be a bezel-less one will be determined by the marketplace which, as others have noted, is increasingly going for bigger phones, even for not-so-big hands.

I won't be surprised to a see a Plus sized OLED model. But everything in between I am doubtful. What I would like to see is ProMotion, I feel that my iPhone X has a bit of ghosting which is too noticeable compared to the ghosting on the 7+, which is barely imperceptible.

And one more thing... the notch needs to go. While it's a good compromise for the branding of an Apple device, it's an ugly design aesthetic.
LOL the notch isn't going anywhere.
Want your phone to look like Android slab, get an android or an older iPhone model
