If you read the article, it's obviously because they have a special differentiating feature in mind that isn't ready yet. Apple isn't sarisfoed with how current inductive chargers work.

Yes, I read it. I still find it a little comical that they can't get this ready. I have no need for wireless charging so I am cool with it, just find it kind of ridiculous.

Why do we call these things wireless charging? When you still have to put the phone on a something ATTACHED to a wire? What is the difference to that and a regular dock other than cuteness?

Call me when we developed Tesla’s invention of true wireless charging.
How about instead of people complaining they invent it themselves?

wireless charging is a "nice t have" feature. it isn't a deal breaker. I have it on my S7 edge but don't use it as it conflicts with my car mount magnet. Im sure you will all have something else to moan about in a few hours time ;)

Wireless charging is a cool feature. if Apple adopts the standard Qi technology, than th lack of an Apple version on day 1 isn't going to be that big of an issue.

is wireless charging some tentpole feature that's a "must have". no. But it's convenient and a "nice to have". not everyones going to use it or care, but for the few people, it's nice.

not currently using it, but have in the past. it's nice at the end of the day, instead of fumbling for a wire, I just put the phone down on my nightstand and it starts charging. does anything really change with how I use the device? no. But it's just a quality of life improvement not having to fumble for a wire.

It gets worse too... HomePod in low quantities in December? Amazon Echo and Google have been doing this for years! The HomePod won't even have the full set of Siri capabilities from the iPhone at launch Apple has stated... its mind boggling.

Very surprising why they won't even mention it at the very least. It's hardly new tech that shouldn't be hard to maker

Behind the scenes, launches are always chaos. I do think Apple is reaching technically lately to try and keep up with competition.

And not doing a very good job at all. I think they focus on one thing and forget everything else. Since WWDC we know that one thing is AR. Don't need AR in an inductive charger, so it gets left behind.

I have two for my S7 and I can say that it's nice when I am at my desk, but terrible when in bed. It's a good solution when you are getting up and down multiple times and you need to step away from the charger, but you can't lay in bed and use your phone and let it charge. Also, I have a cat who steps on everything and she seems to have no remorse about interfearing with my alarmclocks charge.

My colorful old Nokia Lumia 920 Qi standard charger is waiting.. (we'll see if Apple lets it work with it or not)

Its a total nice to have. As others have pointed out this will let public charging start to standardize on wireless chargers instead of the different flavors of wires and chargers - which would be nice.

I’m just shocked that 3rd party wireless chargers will work honestly. I figured it had to be Apple branded or at least have the MFi symbol

As they say, this isn't Apple's first rodeo. I'm not a fan of TC but I'm 100% he understands the stakes here.

I wish i could agree with you. I think Cook is obviously smart and knows a lot about finance and supply chain, but I don't think he has a clue about the consequences of his poorly chosen innovations or what it takes to run a technology company.

it's a "mileage may vary" feature. I don't usually use my phone once I put it down for the night. so I'm ok with the way I use it.

I know peoplewho have their wireless chargers at the office so when they're working it sits on the charger, and they just grab their phone and go when they need it. I myself only tend to charge at night

i'd be surprised if it didn't. alot of cars, furniture, hotels already support the standard.

but i wouldn't be surprised if the one from apple will be allowed to charge a bit faster than the others.

Phil Schiller on wireless charging 5 years ago
"
As for wireless charging, Schiller notes that the wireless charging systems still have to be plugged into the wall, so it’s not clear how much convenience they add. The widely-adopted USB cord, meanwhile, can charge in wall outlets, computers and even on airplanes, he said.

“Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated,” Schiller said."

My take on the delay is its because folks would say "should be included in new iPhone box for £1000"

It would be nice to be able to slip my iPhone X into my Volt's Qi charging pocket for a little boost but somehow I doubt this will be possible because of Apple's "higher RF standards."

Furthermore if Apple has higher RF standards that they can't even meet themselves then how the eff will 3rd parties manufacture compatible chargers?

Time for a new CEO. Boot Cook back into operations to make the trains run on time again.

I'm keeping the faith. This story doesn't help BUT Apple execs have been more brash than usual this week. Either they are in denial or they have cards in their hands we don't realize they have.
I think you are on the money with this. They are gonna pull something out and it will make us ALL eat our words
