I think Siri was known pretty well in advance. Especially after Siri was acquired by Apple. (It was a standalone app by a company called SRI International beforehand)

Can't we say the same for the fingerprint company they bought?

Considering that this was Apple's big chance to refresh iOS6 into something current and modern, they've already blown it.

One killer feature? I don't think there will be one, but a useful collection of catch-up features:

- Turn-by-Turn
- Passbook
- A metal back (ie no need for a case, genuinely thinner)
- Facebook etc
- Siri improvements

Under Jobs, I'd expect a genuinely killer feature. But this consensual Cook "team" is different.

The killer feature is the Apple logo. Just make that logo bigger, more shiny and more prominent and it will sell like crazy.

I just hope this "new" Apple under Cook's command is going to amaze us with something we have never seen before... It just feels like everything is already known this time but I still have a feeling there must be a feature which is going to amaze us all!

Unless Cook unveils a totally different phone than what has been leaked and assembled so far then I have to say he is failing in his role. The next iPhone has more leaks than the Titanic and the cat is long gone from the bag.

There is still an opportunity to pull a rabbit out of their hat but I just don't see it. He is not the showman Steve was. While the metal back of the new phone looks great it will easily get scratched to hell and since its unibody you can't easily replace it and then there is the NFC interference as in there likely won't be any NFC due to the limited area for NFC antenna's. 13 days to go.

I actually think Samsung are leaking as much of Apple's parts as possible in order to underwhelm us!

The In-cell touchscreen (See Macrumors reference below) is a great set-up for Haptic feedback to be onfuture iPhone.

Apple Granted Patent for 'In-Cell' Touchscreen Display Concepts
Tuesday August 14, 2012 10:22 am PDT by Eric SlivkaA newly-published Apple patent (via AppleInsider) reveals Apple's interest in so-called "in-cell" touchscreen technologies that have been rumored to be appearing in the next-generation iPhone. Adoption of in-cell technology, which integrates the touch sensors directly into the display rather than using a separate layer, is said to be one of the primary advances Apple is using to reduce the thickness of the iPhone to just 7.6 mm from the current 9.3 mm thickness.

The patent, which was originally filed for in June 2007 before the original iPhone even went on sale and is based on a provisional patent application dating all the way back to June 2006, highlights Apple's goals of reducing device size, complexity, and manufacturing costs just as it was attempting to revolutionize the mobile phone industry. The abstract begins:
Disclosed herein are liquid-crystal display (LCD) touch screens that integrate the touch sensing elements with the display circuitry. The integration may take a variety of forms. Touch sensing elements can be completely implemented within the LCD stackup but outside the not between the color filter plate and the array plate. Alternatively, some touch sensing elements can be between the color filter and array plates with other touch sensing elements not between the plates.

One of a number of Apple-proposed concepts for in-cell touchscreens

Apple's extensive patent with 85 claims and 107 different figures covers a host of concepts for how touch sensors could be integrated into LCD panels, including both the overall ideas as well as manufacturing processes that could be used to build the displays.

So much hate for Tim Cook. I wonder how much you guys have actually bothered to read up on him.

He knows what he is doing. Steve Jobs hand picked him. Even if that had not happened, he likely would have gotten the job anyway because he is the most qualified person within the company to be doing it.

Maybe the next iPhone won't have a "one more thing" but the only problem with that is that everyone has grown to expect it. Is it a good phone? Does it do what you need it to do? Oh wait- and it has a great camera? And it has the best app store out there for any mobile device? Wow Apple, you sure did let me down.

I understand LTE is underwhelming because it's not in all markets. I know some people wanted NFC (I could care less on that one) but none of us have even seen the phone yet. Let's see what happens in a couple weeks.

Just to clarify- I am hesitant to upgrade myself, but I'm not on here saying it's Tim Cook's fault. I just don't know if I want to drop the money since I'm out of contract and I may have more fun spending that dough on vacation in October.

Come on!!! Seriously? Any feature will be a killer feature. After all, no one's gonna dare to copy them!

*Cough samsung*

This is what I think:
-Bigger 4" screen.
-LTE (in USA at least).
-Thinner.
-Same battery life (but standby will be more like the iPhone 4).
-A5(out of the new $399 iPad 2, clock speed may be upgraded to match iPad 2).
-Upgraded rear and front cameras (no increase in MP for rear camera, just f/2.2. 1.3MP/720p for front).
-Redesigned (like leaks).
-Some software based feature that hasn't leaked yet. Like iMessage last year leaked literally just before the conference and I think the same thing will happen this year, but with something else!
-NFC after reading Anandtech's article looks unlikely to me now. They are testing the water with the current Passbook implementation shown at WWDC.
-802.11n 5GHz (finally).

To be honest, the ONE thing I would LOVE is the ability to hide the keyboard on the iPhone anywhere you are!! Like you can on the iPad, it currently just gets in the way (for example) after writing an email and then having the smallest space to go scroll back up and review what you've written...

After reading this article and seeing that the iPhone won't have NFC, I think Apple will do contactless, wireless payments over Bluetooth 4.0.

Bluetooth 4.0 is quicker (low latency) and lower power than classic Bluetooth and doesn't have the patent issues like NFC. It's also cooler technology and Apple has put it in all their new gear, it's about time they do something really interesting with it.

Not going to happen. NFC has all the momentum and outside of the US is becoming very common place. I use it every day in Malaysia and when I travel to China and Singapore.

I would love to have a generic NFC account on my phone tied to my iTunes account rather than the specific cards I carry today.

Well, NFC might be used in Asia but not in Europe. Too bad that Japan where they have used NFC actively for the past 10 years or so uses a Felica standard which is not compatible with the standard used in rest of the world.

Bluetooth (classic) has already world wide market penetration which will be handy when rolling out the 4.0 standard.

The fingerprint thing. I hate passwords.

A way to pay only for data used, not to subsidize Phone People.

A way to connect to every network in the entire world so that my Apple stock keeps going up.

Think I Figured It Out

I reckon that Apple will give the new range of iPhones a variety of colour options. Official ones, maybe 5 to start with.

The metal backing lends itself to this, they've done it with the iPods, and it is so "Apple" that it would work perfectly.

Black, white, pink, blue, red, yellow. Imagine that.

another I would like to see is wireless charging... Again, the technology is there (just like NFC) but it is not mainstream ;)
You mean like the wireless charging where you basically have to put your device on some plate? I don't consider that wireless and yes, I do consider it a useless feature. I'd rather see true wireless charging.

Let's face it, no one really saw Siri coming, so I bet there's something unthinkable coming...

Or maybe that's just me...
We knew everything about Siri well before the announcement. The onliest thing we didn't know is how they were going to name it, so all the rumours were talking about "Assistant". There were even mock-ups which turned out to be remarkably close to the 'real deal'.
