I know lots of people here think the mini was just the result of listening to a minority of users with loud voices.
However I’m genuinely curious to see how the 2021 model (with stores opened) will do. I am using a mini ATM and I won’t go back to big phones. I think if people are able to actually see and use it, it might do better.
Phone Stores are open in most countries and you can use the mini biut most people don't like it as the screen is too small to play games and watch videos on. Only a minority of female users would see the appeal

So basically you wanted the new SE that's rumored to be coming out. That wasn't the target demographic for the mini. That's the target demographic for the SE. One of them is for consumers who buy based on price, the other for consumers who buy on features. If the mini would have been as you described, you'd have lost a different segment of users and had two phones with substantial market overlap.

The “new” SE that’s rumored to be coming out next year will be the same as the existing one with updated internals. The one after that, again according to rumor, will be an 11 with updated intervals. Neither will be a small form factor phone with an edge to edge screen. That could change, but that’s what prevailing rumor says right now.

Also, the phone I described in my post wasn’t what I want. Per the post I replied to, it was an example of a phone that would meet my needs if the goal is reducing costs. The point is, I am flexible in features. The priority is size.

I understand the different markets each of Apple’s phones are meant to serve. If, however, a small iPhone needs a smaller feature set so it can obtain a lower price to go with its smaller size, then that’s what they should do. I‘m in.

Obviously the sales of the mini vs. the larger models did not warrant continuing it. I find it a LOT easier to keep hold of my 12 pro max than my earlier non Apple tiny phones. Of course the Poetic spartan case helps a ton too, but I like the size. And I'm charging this thing a least once a day, sometimes 2-3 times. I can't imagine anything with a smaller battery.

Because it’s only a minority of women who don’t use their phone for games and videos?

My guess is that the Mini appeals mostly to people who have a more healthy relationship with their phone— they don’t need a huge screen because they aren’t staring at it all the time. They also don’t need huge batteries because they aren’t staring at it all the time.

Those are also the people that don’t feel the need to compulsively upgrade every cycle.

I think I’d prefer the mini form factor, but I still have plenty of useful life in my X. It’ll be a shame if the mini comes and goes before I have a chance to experience it, but I’m also not motivated to replace my phone before I need to.

Have Apple considered selling iPhones with lesser cameras? I think many people out there couldn't care less for an 8K 28Megapixel camera. I think it will slash a good sum off the price of the unit. I really do not need 3 lenses and I think many others don't either.

Or people with MBPs, gaming consoles, and home theaters with thousands of dollars in equipment would also see the appeal. I don't play games and rarely watch videos on my phone because I have other devices that do those things far better. Why would I do those things on a 6.7" phone when I have a home theater with a TV that does 4K HDR and a 5.2.4 Atmos audio setup? Maybe if someone is a college student living in a dorm room they need a single do-it-all device. Personally 90% of my phone usage is browsing safari and trading stocks. Don't need a phablet to do either of those things.

The buyers of the mini generally prioritize size, then features, then price. SE buyers generally prioritize price first, then size, then features. Making the mini anything but what it is would've created excess overlap with other models. Putting price first gives you the typical SE buyer. Putting features first gives you a typical Pro model buyer. Roughly equal prioritization of the three gives you an 11 or Xr buyer. Maybe a market big enough for Apple to keep the mini around doesn't exist, but changing it just creates overlap with other iPhones and now suddenly a different phone is only making up 5% of sales.

I knew my decision to wait until 2023 to upgrade from my iPhone X was the best one! Then again this could be part of Apples strategy of planting fantastical stories into the supply chain to find leakers. Personally what Apple needs to put a lot of effort into is better zoom. I was on the bus’s and a man was standing across the street that looked like President Biden. I could clearly see the man, when I decided to capture the image using my iPhone X and using the digital zoom it came out awful.

Nah, wait until 2025. It will blow the 2023 out of the water!! In all seriousness, I stopped playing the well I should maybe wait for the next years model game a long time ago. If my phone was having issues, battery life was starting to fade, or had a feature I really wanted I'd just buy it now. Unless the next one was imminent. Besides, this is a rumors site and I don't put much stock into rumors for phones 2 years out. But yeah, it'll be faster, have a better camera, likely a better screen. Not really a stretch there. But I commend you for maxing your value out of your X. I tend to upgrade every 3-4 years myself.

Cheers.

Sure, but again, the question in the post I originally replied to was about what could be done to make a small phone viable in the future. It's not about today's iPhone lineup and how it might have looked.

As I say, rumors (including from Kuo) suggest that 2023 SE will be a 6" LCD model adopting the the XR/11 form factor. These rumors are credible since the SE has used a vintage form factor in its original and second generation iterations. If typical evolution continues, the 11 will leave the lineup in September 2022, opening the door for a 6" LCD SE 2023.

Putting price first gives you the typical SE buyer. Putting features first gives you a typical Pro model buyer. Roughly equal prioritization of the three gives you an 11 or Xr buyer. The viability of a small iPhone in tomorrow's lineup can't be determined with any certainty on the basis of what's available today. We're coming up on generation six of the iPad Mini, a product which was written off by skeptics years ago. Apple made it viable by finding the right price-point. It costs more than the larger standard iPad, and it doesn't get updated nearly as often as that model (or any other iPad). But it remains the in the lineup. An iPhone Mini could fit into the lineup by way of a similar strategy or some other strategy that makes for the most profitable business case.

UGH

What a terrible time to release the mini, stores closed or limited interaction. People that haven't had the chance to hold a mini may not realize how AMAZING it is. I also hold my belief that it should have been a PRO model. Some users will ONLY get phones with the best camera(s).

iPhone 13 Pro mini
iPhone 13 Pro mini
iPhone 13 Pro mini

"Don't stop, believin..."

I wonder how many of those who spoke negatively of the pixel wars will do a u turn.

At this point I dont even know what iPhone I want to hold off for...the 13 Pro Max...14 Pro Max?

For the first time basically since the iPhone came out I didnt buy the new iPhone. The 12 Pro Max seemed to be almost the exact same as the 11 Pro max. Which wasn't a huge difference over the Xs Max. Battery on the 11 Pro max has been killer. Been the only phone that after a year the battery is still great. I may wait another year or two.

Wait until your current iPhone is no longer useful or frustrating to use. Then, upgrade.

Most females I know like big phones. They can actually just stick in a purse to carry around, instead of having to put it in a pants pocket.

Interestingly, at least at my workplace, the men went to big phones more slowly than the women did.

My prior prediction had been that Apple would release a mini-sized phone with LCD and LTE along with Face ID, and would not release the SE2 with Touch ID.

I was wrong on both counts. However, now I wonder how it would have sold if they did release that hypothetical model and priced it in between.

If the only mini was a Pro, that would be the last straw for me. I would have bought a 2020 SE instead of the 12 mini I have. I had a XS for two years and made little or no use of the features at the extra expense of a flagship.

I think many people only buy iPhones because it is the superior platform overall, not for the Pro features and they waste money.
I like the zoom camera and stainless steel body so

Depending on what the iPhone 13 Mini brings to the table, I may pick one up in hopes that it lasts me as long as possible, despite already owning an iPhone 12 Mini.

Sigh.

Man, what a great day for me. I have been interested in a aluminum 6.7 inch Max model for a while now. Take my money Apple! Will likely skip the 2021 iPhone if this is the case.

I suspect there will remain a mini like option in 2022... a new SE that does away with the touch ID button and gains face ID... basically a mini. That said it will not likely be high spec (matching that years iPhone 14 lineup) nor will it be updated every year, maybe ever two.
