Kuo: 2022 iPhones to Feature 48-Megapixel Camera, 8K Video, and 6.1 and 6.7" Sizes With No 5.4" Mini Option

Ok, this is it, this is the year I’ll be buying an iPhone 13 mini and protect it in order to not lose or damage it, because it has to last many, many years (6, 7, maybe 8 years). I can’t, physically, handle a +6” smartphone with my hands. And I don’t have small hands, but it is impossible to operate the control centre with a single hand without dropping the phone.

Two 6.1” and two 6.7” iPhones... my God. That sounds horrible for ergonomics

Apple wouldn't call it Pro unless it has Pro features and a mini simply has no space for an additional camera. And why should they bother to create a device that won't sell?
Oh please, there's nothing pro about the features of most products Apple calls pro. I love my iPad Pro, my AirPods Pro, I loved my iPhone 11 Pro (but not as much as my iPhone 12 Mini) but they're not pro, they're deluxe.

That's what "Pro" means for Apple, they use it as a synonym for "Deluxe".

Don’t need a bloody 48 megapixel camera or 8K video, and I definitely don’t need the file sizes they produce! Nothing we can do about it though. Those numbers are big so they must be better. Can’t have enough pixels or K. While they’re at it, let’s get more hertz and nits. No limits!

If there is no Mini form factor in 2022, then i will just adapt to what is available from Apple when i decide to upgrade my 13/12S Mini. Maybe Apple will reintroduce the 5.8 form factor as it was very successful, and don't forget we have the SE line as well.

Praying that the 2021 iphone mini will have under screen touch ID. I didn't buy the 2020 mini because I hate face ID.

iPhone 13 2021

$1099 iPhone Pro Max
$999 iPhone Pro

$799 iPhone 13
$699. iPhone 13 Mini

$699 iPhone 12 ( -$100 )
$599. iPhone 12 Mini ( -$100 )

$499. iPhone 11 ( Replacing iPhone XR )
$399. iPhone SE

ProMotion, LTPO OLED, X60 Modem, Sensor Shift across Product Line. Smaller Notch, Bigger Sensor. Bigger Battery. I am hoping at least power button Touch ID.

iPhone 14 2022

$1199. iPhone Pro Max
$1099. iPhone Pro

$899. iPhone 14 Max. ( New Price Segment )
$799. iPhone 14 ( The same price as previously 6.1" )

$699. iPhone 13 ( -$100 as usual )
$599. iPhone 13 Mini ( -$100 as usual )

$499. iPhone 12 mini ( -$100 as usual )
$399. iPhone SE 3 ( March 2022 ) with 5G Modem update.

So 2022 bumped the Pro segment by a $100, and insert an extremely popular 6.7" size on their "mainstream" iPhone as per Kuo. 2022 ( I hope ) will get under display Touch ID so no one gives a damn about that extra $100 anyway. 2022 Lineup will also be the first Full 5G Lineup. Carrier can now start to refarm every possible spectrum to 5G and force you to upgrade ( in a good way ).

iPhone 15 2023

$1199. iPhone Pro Max
$1099. iPhone Pro

$899. iPhone 15 Max
$799. iPhone 15

$699. iPhone 14
$599. iPhone 13

$499. iPhone 13 Mini
$399. iPhone SE 3

This year they will get rid of the notch. And add periscope lens. I hope there is a iPhone SE Plus or Entry Level iPhone SE redesign somewhere. Possibly in March 2024. I am guessing this will also be the first year Apple test their own Modem. ( At least that is their goal ).

So to the people worrying, I think you still get to buy an iPhone 13 Mini in 2023 / 2024. By that time, the smaller phone segment, which also represent the lower / entry level segment would have been good enough for nearly all usage. i.e Any update to replace the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone SE would have to be better, and they are likely going to good enough for most of us as we enter the end of Smartphone maturity curve.

Maybe the problem of not selling the mini so well is not because of its size but more that people who like small iPhones preferred an iPhone 12 Pro Mini not a regular Mini.

Kuo is predicting two 6.1" and two 6.7" devices.

Looks like Apple has finally come to terms that people want large displays at the high end and mainstream. The 5.4" mini is clearly getting the boot and getting replaced by a 6.7" model.
Exactly. I HATE that dang Mini as it slots into the entry level price now. It should just be killed off and replaced by a 6.7" model.
So true that people want the largest possible display at the high end and mainstream; they should do this for the 12.9" iPad Pro too. In fact it would be perfect if they made EVERY iPad model 12.9", then differentiate them based on processors and cameras.

These decisions makes sense since iPhone 12 Mini content area is almost close to iPhoneSE and speaker is worse. However 12 and 12 Max are too bulky and heavy - iPhone 4/4s/5/5s design is OK when smartphone is compact. Taking into assumption that most people use silicone rubber case now I prefer old iPhone 6s design.

Good riddance mini!! Apple learned the hard way that commenters on tech sites don’t represent the general public
I'll give you an example as to what may have caused the mini to flop. Let's say a person who once enjoyed his/her gold iPhone 5s got excited about a small iPhone model and went online immediately to buy one only to find out that it only came in aluminum and without the gold color. So they thought "Sigh! Ok the gold iPhone 12 Pro it is! Its not as big as the Max." Maybe people expected a 12 Pro Mini.

Yet, consumers didn't need to see or hold the 6.7" Pro Max before buying it. The Pro Max outsold the mini by 400% right at launch in late 2020. If you objectively look at the sales of the iPhone 12 mini, it's pretty clear it's by far the worst performing device in the series.

That’a fair point 🙂 though I would argue big phones are the norm nowadays and everyone knows how big phones feel and work. Might not be true for a mini phone.

But anyway, I’ll always go toward the smallest iPhone. I’m in the minority as numbers show but that’s no big deal. To each their own 🙂

The iPhone X will be 6 years old in 2023. Do you normally hang onto a phone that long as your daily driver?
If it was the iPhone 1, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s or 5s that was gonna be 6 years old, I would have upgraded already. But since the A10 Fusion and Bionic series with desktop class processors, the iPhone models can go much longer. Look at how long Apple supported the iPad 2. I’m confident Apple will still support iPhone in 2023, might be the last iOS update but it will still be supported.

RIP Mini. But it was quite obvious after all these sales stats. Luckily, the 13 Mini will come out.

I love light devices but enjoy both, Mini and Max devices. So I guess 13 Mini will be here to stay as my main device. And maybe a 14 Max Non Pro, if light enough, 228g is just too much to take esp after owning the cutest of them all, 12 Mini.

My God. Don’t take away our mini! It only just arrived.
Apple is learning what the rest of the companies should be figuring out as well: that it's foolish to listen to the vocal minority on social media, they do not represent the masses.

... because of the battery size. I need to use my phone throughout the day for my business, so the fact that the battery lasts all day is a deal-maker that I couldn't refuse, but would have much preferred a smaller size.
I can't understand this argument. The battery of my iPhone Mini is the best battery I've ever had.

Sometimes I forget to plug it into the charger in the evening and next day I can use it a second day without troubles.

@leeuk321: Perhaps one of your apps has a bug and uses way too much power.
