There are tons of people who hate driving. Like my wife. There are also tons of people who like to drive. Like me. As long as I can have a car with a sporty car with a manual transmission and CarPlay, I’ll be happy.

By the way, am I the only one concerned that the same company that designed this icon of a car driving off a bridge is making a self driving car?

When my non-self-driving Tesla was in the shop for more than a month i was given a self-driving Tesla as a loaner.

It was terrible. The entire time you have to be on alert and ready to take control. It’s actually easier to just turn it off - a lot less stressful. The only useful part, to me, were features that exist on non-self-driving cars anyway (e.g. smart cruise control that maintains distance). Having to try and guess what the car might suddenly do (for example, on a certain stretch of california 101 it wanted, every time, to run me into a medium), and be ready to counteract the car at any time, requires so much more energy than just driving it myself.

Funny. My Subaru Legacy that costs 25% less than a Tesla does the same.

You are collecting valuable data and help Tesla train the fleet. It’s like teaching baby how to speak. You just need to be veryyy patient.

Its isn't able to show there are two left turning lanes there, and a long ramp to go north does it on that map? :D
Wait what? It’s showing an overpass and saying to turn left off it lol

if you plan on dying in a couple of years, you have a point. but if you live to at least 70, it’ll be here way before then.
People here have no idea that it'll be another 50 years before fully autonomous cars are ever on the road...

Just look at how slow progress has been over the last 10 years, compared to 20 years ago.

Apple still has time to ramp up production of batteries till enough roads are off limits to drivers due to whatever crisis gets cooked up. They can add batteries to all their computers. Charge them in the middle of the night at low price watt hours and use them to power the computer at peak watt hour times. Their car tech will start off being rested on their devices before being rolled out in a car. A car that will only turn on using Face ID or biometrics.

As much as I like Apple products, I will never put my life into the hands of a self-driving car.
I drive as a significant portion of my profession, have had extensive driving training and consider myself a far above average driver.

But I recognize that a massive chunk of metal is moving so fast the human brain cannot possibly be the safest form of operation.

the tech is not there yet. But, at some point will be dangerous and downright selfish to choose to drive yourself. People are bad drivers.

even tech at its infancy right now, the majority of issues come from human drivers causing the accidents.

There is too much momentum, potential, and lives to be saved in this space for companies not to succeed here.

I’m sorry but I cannot disagree more with your comment. In the US 50k people DIE from car crashes every year. Every year! God only knows the amount of injuries. Self driving cars will take out all human frailties and emotions. It’s an absolute great innovation. Save countless lives and injuries.

People say this, then they get in a vehicle driven by a completely random Lyft, Uber, city bus, airport transporter, commuter aircraft pilot, etc., or family member, with an even more suspect probability of human error. Go figure.
I own a Tesla, and no you don't.
I'm driving with my Model 3 autopilot on, and my SO says "please turn it off". Then a few minutes later, with me manually weaving in and out of traffic on 101 she says "please turn it back on". :)

I cannot agree more. Well said

There's three profit paths in new car sales.
1. Selling the new car. Not a lot of profit but leads to #2.
1a. Taking trades and reselling used cars. This produces much more profit than new car sales.

2. Parts and service. This is where most of the money is made in a dealership. Apple will absolutely kill it here selling "parts/upgrades".

3. Financing. Currently dealerships get about 1 point for financing a customer through a bank. Manufactures have been using this profit path for years now providing in house financing and will take greater risks vs. a standard bank with customers due to the other two profit paths available. Apple will dominate here as well. And in my opinion, is the main driver (pun unintended) for producing a car.

The lineup: AppleCar, AppleCar mini, AppleCar pro and of course AppleCar pro Max. Looking forward to AppleCare+ and two accidental damages covered per 12 months. And will there be an AppleCar upgrade program?
