I wonder how much of this demands is due to people like our family that skipped the last few updates. Part of that is because the high price means it takes over 2 years to pay off the phone at the rates AT&T and Verizon charge per month.

Definitely.
I am totally smitten by the 11 Pro Max. 2 reasons:

1) I can capture moments that I've never been able to capture with my iPhone. I *really* want to take a picture in low light much more frequently than I feel, "I really wish I could have used Portrait mode / bokeh".

2) My phone's battery lasts significantly longer than ever before. All of the questionable decisions with personal safety implications I've made while on (solo female) work travel occurred after phone battery died.

Next to it just being a good TELEPHONE, those are the 2 most important things.
Those 2 features make it, for me, the most must-have iPhone upgrade since the 7's improvements over the 6+.

I feel like Apple's emphasis on low monthly payment and good trade in values have helped to sell more iPhone 11's. I also think the naming scheme was much more clever this year (ie. iPhone XR -> iPhone 11), as many people who weren't familiar with Apple had trouble distinguishing the features specific to each model.

You’re describing normal people. Yearly upgraders are a fraction of iPhone users.
Yeah, it constantly baffles me why people continue to proclaim on these forums that an iPhone release is a disappointment because it's not a revolutionary upgrade from the previous year's model they bought.

In fact, depending upon whose info you read, the AVERAGE upgrade cycle for iPhone user is 3 or 4 years. No, that's not the longest cycle, but the average. One of the analysts had given stats on expected percentage of upgrades, and those with the 1-year upgrade cycle represented only 16% of iPhone owners.

In other words (and I've mentioned this about 1000x now), those who bought iPhones last year are not Apple's prime target market for this year's models.

All I want for my next iPhone is a non-oled and non-face id device. I don't care about the size. Just want a regular back lit led display. Looks like an iPhone 8 is my only choice or move to another platform.

Just some anecdotal observations. Here in Tokyo, people are still queuing in lines outside Apple Stores for the phones. I don't know if they schedule appointments to purchase or if they arrive and the employees ask them to queue, but it seems demand is strong. Also seems that instead of having a massive queue on the release day the demand is lasting longer.

99.9% of people talking about 5G are positioning it as a “must have” feature simply so they can criticize the iPhone for not having it, even though it will bring no noticeable benefits to their phone.
I'm really surprised with this continued narrative. Lots of people buy phones to last 4 years. 5g will be something worth having by then, so some people can wait another year to get that feature to take them to 2024. It's something people refer to as 'future proofing'.

Also, for the life of me I don't understand why this upsets so many people. You are not Apple. Lol

Impossible. Everyone says Apple has already peaked and is now on the road of steady decline. Eventually Apple will be lucky to sell 50 million iPhones a year.

First, that's far from true as phones, like all computers, have a limited shelf life. iPhones last long, but not forever. Second, when did 50 million of anything become a number to sneeze at. Apple no longer cares about sales numbers. They care about services. Once you are locked into the iCloud ecosystem, you aren't leaving.

Because it will be another 2+ years before there is any benefit to 5g. Right now to get a 5g Android, you pay a premium on the device and an addition service fee to your provider... for something you can barely get any use out of. It's probably $200 more for the phone and over the course of 2 years, another $300 in service fees. So $500 down the drain and a 3 year old phone that may or may not work on the bands that are implemented. All so you can "future proof".

Local Apple store was packed to the rafters on Saturday. This wasn’t the case the week after the Xs released.

Kuo: Apple is the greatest company in the history of the world.

macRumors posters unanimously agree.
[automerge]1570411013[/automerge]
In it, it "appears" he is describing manufacturing shipments, NOT projected "unit sales".

Apple needs to get as many iPhones as possible into its Sales Channel here in the States BEFORE Dec 15th, to circumvent the 15% iPhone Tariff, which incidentally, Kuo does NOT even mention !
Yeah because it is not relevant. That was a known quantity. They didn’t increase production now because of that.

I’m betting that a true successor to the iPhone SE will never happen and the compact 4” screen size is dead.

All these “SE 2” rumours are click-bait and Apple instead is simply going to refresh the iPhone 8.

Yeah the SE2 is definitely going to come from the 8 lineage and not a throwback to the original SE.

iPhone SE2 = iPhone 8S = iPhone 8 SE = whatever they call it

I expect it to be in the iPhone 7/8 4.7” form factor. Probably the same camera, bump and all. Apple will reuse that exterior design because it saves them money. They could extend the iPhone 5/5S/SE form factor, but I think that ship sailed.

Yes... future-proofing is a valid reason for wanting a certain feature in a phone.

In this case, however, you probably won't be missing much if you're *only* using a 4G phone in 2024.

4G is great. Look at all the stuff you can do with it! We're watching mobile video... streaming live video from our devices... uploading pictures and video to social media and the cloud... etc.

Now try to remember the 3G phone experience. We couldn't do hardly any of those things on 3G like we can today on 4G.

Basically... the shift from 3G to 4G went from unusable to usable. From terrible to great. That was the big leap.

I can't imagine the same kind of gravitational shift going from 4G to 5G.

Also... you probably wouldn't want the first examples of a 5G phone anyway. It always takes a couple generations to work the kinks out. (remember the first 4G phones?)

I wouldn't want to be first in line for that ride... and stay on that ride for 4 years.

And the networks are a mess too. Some use mmWave which is blisteringly fast but severely range-limited. There needs to be a node on a lightpole every 200 feet or so. And you basically have to be standing outside under a node... or at least within visible sight. They can't go through walls and even leaves on a tree can block the signal. WTF?

Other networks use slower but farther-reaching tower-based technology. That's a little better. Even then you might have a "5G" indicator on your phone but you probably won't notice the difference in day-to-day use. Not everyone runs SpeedTest.net all the time. :p

Personally... I'm not concerned about having 5G on an iPhone anytime soon.

I read an article that summed it up like this:

"Five years from now your smartphone will be using 4G almost all the time, even when you've got a 5G phone in a 5G city."

I’m really surprised about the iPhone 11 demand. I guess the camera and battery life improvements are very good.

I was skeptical as well. However, having spent time with it, it really is more than an XR on Protein Bars.

Its more than enough phone for the majority of those on the edge of what to do. I think the general malaise over 5G from non power users (the vast majority) and the drop to $699 has converted a lot of 7/8 users to the 11.

The Pros are probably the best iPhones to date if you have the budget. The extra $400 for the Max 64g is a large some of green for the majority of users.

Apple continues to make great strides pushing users to iCloud with the 64g entry points. I know many who are heavy iCloud users and do just fine with 64g.

So, with the $699 price, Apple’s aggressive Trade In program, and IMO, some wanting to give Apple a “let’s see how the all new design actually turns out the first year” the 11 and 11 Pro are outstanding devices at their final design point. ;)

I don’t understand why people are in love with this new iPhone... a better camera as the main feature does nothing for me. I’m obviously in the minority on this one.

I’d love an iPhone with usb c, and bi lateral wireless charging however.

I feel like the most innovative product Apple has is the watch.

I‘d love USB-C but couldn’t care less for bi lateral charging. Camera alone is worth the upgrade. It’s a HUGE jump Form XS. Battery life improvement is a cherry on the cake.
If only my wife would want to upgrade her 6 to my X this year....

His point is 5G is never a main selling point for the majority of people. I’d buy this 11 Pro in a heartbeat if my wife want to upgrade her 6 and take the X out of my hand. Couldn’t care less with 5G. 4G is already plenty fast.

This is exactly what’s going to happen.

4.7” screen like the 8, Touch-ID, A13, camera from XR/11, etc.

Coming from a XS, the 11 Pro Max battery life is incredible, and the camera system is truly amazing!

I am on the 13.2 beta, and with "Deep Fusion" the photos only get better. Night Mode is truly magic, and the video is amazing as well. The upgraded front facing camera is also very nice.

The iPhone 11 Pro's are worth the upgrade, even if you have a XS/XS Max, in my humble opinion. Especially if you need long battery life, and you like to take photos/videos and would actually use the Triple Lens Camera System.
