Minimal upgrade for anyone that already has a decent phone (ip11 or even ip10). Not impressed... but then again, I haven't been impressed with Apple for a long time.

iPhone 13 or iPhone 2021:

120Hz, Touch ID, Small notch, LTPO display, new dual band 5G modem.

Thanks Apple, I will wait with my 11 Pro in hands one more year.

I have a 2020 SE and an 11 Pro and I wish the SE's battery life was better because I still greatly prefer Touch ID... but the battery life on the 11 Pro is so much better, I normally stick with it as my daily.

Maybe if they got rid of the ridiculous camera bump by making the phone ever so slightly thicker and put in a bigger battery they wouldn’t have to make ridiculous self-imposed compromises like this

First of all, I’m happy they didn’t compromise with 120 Hz, and it will come next year along with LTPO, so it can actually be implemented correctly, and not a half job like the majority of android phones have been doing. For those who don’t know, almost all android phones that go up to 120 Hz have to downscale the resolution to 1080P, and take a huge noticeable performance and battery hit when it’s enabled. Also, if the rumors are to be believed, 120 Hz on the iPhone Prototypes was causing a decrease in color accuracy and brightness. I’m happy that they’re waiting for 2021, so that way 120 Hz can be enabled with absolutely no compromises.
And for those who are saying that this is a boring year for iPhones, get used to it. Every year going forward is going to be relatively small to years that have came in the past. So don’t expect huge iPhone 3GS to 4, or 5S to 6, or 7 to X size upgrades. Every year is going to feel smaller and smaller when it comes to upgrades. Also, keep in mind that when Apple releases a new model, they are not targeting customers of their previous model. The iPhone 12 is not directed at iPhone 11 customers. It’s directed at those who are still on iPhone XS, X, 8, 7 or below customers. Going from an iPhone 11 to an iPhone 12 won’t feel like a big upgrade, but going from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 12 will feel like a big upgrade. Just keep that in mind, the majority of people don’t upgrade every year, and the time between upgrades for the majority of customers is getting longer and longer. People hold onto their phones for years nowadays. I see more iPhone 6, 6S, and 7s out in the wild then I do iPhone 11 ‘s.
Which 120Hz Android phones have you actually owned? BE HONEST.

The Samsung S20 5G looks absolutely beautiful at 2400x1080/120Hz. If your eyesight is so excellent that you think you need 3200x1440, then guess what? That mode also takes a hit on the battery due to pushing all those pixels.

Pick your poison -- I for one, having a Samsung S20 5G (actually I got it for the wife), can say that 2400x1080 looks laser sharp and she mentions how much she prefers the 120Hz over her old 60Hz display.

Also, doesn't the iPad Pro have ProMotion (120Hz) already? Is that somehow inferior to whatever Apple is trying to accomplish on the iPhone 12?

120hz would have been nice. 5G is in its infancy and for most people will not make a big difference.
Just realize that if you buy the iPhone 12 it’s basically an enhanced and updated iPhone 11 according to the leaks
I could care less about 5G since the carriers have pretty much eliminated truly unlimited data and there is no such thing as unlimited hotspot so sharing that 5G pipe is not an option. I hardly care now whether my 4G LTE is 150 down or 30 down. The only time I check is when I'm curious. Otherwise, 4G LTE does literally everything I need to do on a phone, be it media or work. Let's not forget about WIFI which is where I'm at 90% of the time!

I can never understand why people try to downplay ProMotion's significance. It's incredibly apparently and very difficult (for me, at least) to go back to displays that don't use it.

But the whole point of ProMotion isn’t that the screen is always refreshing at its maximum rate, but instead adjusting the refresh rate to provide benefit, whether that’s fast or slow refresh. The other thing to keep in mind is that ProMotion is easier to implement on an LCD panel than it is on OLED, which is why Apple hasn’t offered it on any OLED panels yet, and Samsung just started offering it (their version of adaptive refresh rate) on the latest Note.

If I had to guess, what Apple is actually trying to get to is mini or micro LED, where they get ProMotion without effecting colors / shade variation AND better energy management. They know they’re not going to get it with OLED, at least in its current iteration and cost and supply chain (Samsung).

I don't care. On my Samsung phones - which have had 120Hz for years by the way - I used to turn it off anyway.

The notch is unforgivable. It's crazy that we would still have this ugly thing right there.
Unfortunately Apple is at a point now where the see the notch as an identification mark on the front side.
Lame.

Apple needs to:
1. redesign the notification center. It's ridiculous.
2. add haptic feedback to the keyboard, and make it possible to customize different intensities to your heart's content. It's crazy that you have no feedback whatsoever if you're typing and have the phone on mute. Those who are concerned with battery can just turn it off.
3. make it possible to adjust volume for independent apps and settings and not this general thing they're doing, forcing you to do it while the thing is being played, such as separate volume control for keyboard volume, music volume, ring volume, system volume.
4. add suggestions from the address book when you're dialing a phone number. Common now Apple.
5. make it possible to customize the texting app in every conceivable way. Font size, bubble size shape color.
6. make it possible to schedule a message to be sent at a certain time/date.
7. make it possible to move the icons anywhere you want to.
8. Use an OS-wide clipboard and make it not expire. You should be able to copy text now and paste it tomorrow if you want to.
9. Give us an option to NOT go to the next email but back to inbox after deleting an email.
I think it's ridiculous there is no 3 by now. I'd like to be able to hear the keyboard without it bugging everyone within a mile radius. And should be able to adjust navigation volume without waiting for it to speak.

I haven't seen others, but I agree, 120hz on the S20 line makes a significant difference in the user experience. I don't think it would be as significant on an iPhone, because as much as I like the S20, iOS is generally a smoother and more touch responsive experience anyway. But I agree that the S20 does it right. That's a great phone overall to be honest - it was kind of underplayed IMO with the Ultra being a let down for how expensive it was.

No it isn't

With apdative 120hz its on by default

No it's turned off by default, because it's such a huge battery drain. Even Samsung itself says "Standard Refresh Rate: 60 Hz, get longer battery life"

Screen Shot 2020-09-14 at 20.06.27.png

That's the reason Apple hasn't used it in its iPhones. Nobody will praise its screen, if the battery life is cut by 25%.

So Apple is expected to hold off iPhones at usual september event to show nothing in october. Seems legit.

If you have to get Android to get the 120Hz refresh rate, is it really worth the effort?

Is the 120Hz even visually discernible by the human eye compared with that we have now on the iPhone?

Yes. If you haven't used a higher refresh display (on a laptop for instance) you should. 144Hz is common now and Dell has a 300Hz display option for their Alienware 15. The 300Hz is unreal!

Pretty sure they will announce the new iPhones tomorrow, it doesn't seem like there is enough about a new iPhone to devote to its own event. We already know what's in the iOS14 release and we know what the LiDAR sensor does. There is a new design, but it just doesn't seem to be enough to justify the iPhone having it's own event. I would love to think there is a nice "one more thing" we don't already know, but without 120Hz, seems like that is one less thing that would have been exciting. Makes more sense to announce tomorrow and know that when it's going to be available for pre-order.

The answer is in the article if you bother reading it.
Ugh

In a research note obtained by MacRumors, Kuo added that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 will feature a slightly narrower notch to adequately display information in the top-left and top-right corners like the time and signal strength.

Wait if they’re capable of making a narrower notch, why not put it on the other models as well?

I didn’t ask why they’re making a smaller notch on the 5.4 inch iPhone. I asked why they’re not using that smaller notch on the bigger phones. Now, point to me where that question is answered smart guy.

It's no surprise. Apple has almost always been behind in terms of features like fast charging, wireless charging, to name a few. The only reason most people are still buying iphone is for the iOS. Features like imessage, icloud, etc makes it hard for people already hooked to leave the apple ecosystem.
Pretty much spot on. They've been behind...old tech with today's prices... imessages reminds me of BBM back in the days... holding on the the only reason why you haven't jumped ship.

Embarrassing? 120hz adds nothing other than a checkbox in the marketing material. I have an iPad Pro and it’s not a very big deal. There are more important things that can be implemented.
Yeah for £1099 starting price it's embarrassing not to have it. It's standard on all other flagship phones. It's about a far smoother UI experience which 120hz provides.

It took them 13 years to give us a dark mode. You really mean to tell me Apple couldn’t figure out white vs dark for 13 years? Really?

I’m saying that now that they have it the 120 is what people are fixated on now that they have the dark mode. Whether the 120 refresh rate would be make the phone better or worse functionally
