It’s akward to give the user the option to choose between display quality or battery life.

It's actually quite common in the Android world. Samsung has that turned off by default and allows the user the choice in display quality and battery life and it makes perfect sense to do so.

If I'm playing some casual mobile game or reading some news, I'm good for saving battery.
If I'm watching video or playing a higher caliber game, having the choice to toggle on higher refresh and display quality is awesome sauce and takes 2 seconds.

Apple doesn't like to let the end user have such choice and micromanages the experience a bit too much to maintain the mantra of "it just works" (which is why the iPhone is also known as the dumb phone). It's a love/hate thing I have with the user experience of Apple products. This is an instance where user choice is not only a solution but in trusting their customer to not be too stupid to toggle a display setting, they offer choice sooner. By the time the 2021 models hit with that feature, the next best thing will be hitting phones leaving the iPhone still behind as everyone else is like "120hz who?"

Lmao I love how people actually seem to dislike 120hz like it makes the experience worse for them. It’s such a polarizing feature, but I definitely want it. All I’m saying is, for 1K+ devices, even if you don’t think you care about 120hz, you should still want it.

Apple hasn't told them they want it yet. They'll pretend they don't want/need it until Apple tells them they should lol

I'm talking about note 20 ultra

The one with LTPO it comes on as default
And there’s two reasons why the note ultra has it and Apple doesn’t.
1: the note 20 ultra starts at $1299. Even with the rumored price increase as of this year‘s iPhones, they will still be at least $150-$200 beneath 1300. The $999 note 20 doesn’t have it, and neither will the $999 12 pro.
2: Apple will produce way more iPhone 12 units then Samsung will note 20s and note 20 ultra ‘s. It’s a lot easier to ask a supply chain to produce 500,000 120 Hz panels then it is to ask them to produce 20,000,000 120 hz panels

Can’t believe after how many years of ProMotion on the iPad Pro, they still have not figured it out. Almost redic even if I don’t really need it

The difference is, the iPad Pro’s use LCD panels, not OLED. I think the only company who literally just launched a variable rate (not just 60/120Hz) OLED panel is Samsung, and they can’t produce enough of those panels at the quality and cost that Apple needs to put them into an iPhone, or so I believe.

iPhone 12 models will not support a 120Hz refresh rate due to battery life considerations, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today. Kuo expects the feature to debut on 2021 iPhones with lower-power LTPO display technology.

In a research note obtained by MacRumors, Kuo added that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 will feature a slightly narrower notch to adequately display information in the top-left and top-right corners like the time and signal strength. The rest of the lineup, including two 6.1-inch models and one 6.7-inch model, is said to have the same notch size as iPhone 11 models.

The entire iPhone 12 lineup will support 5G, according to Kuo, with two versions of each model set to be available. This will include both sub-6GHz-only and sub-6GHz-plus-mmWave versions of the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, with shipments of the sub-6GHz-only versions beginning first.

Kuo expects tomorrow's Apple event to be focused on new Apple Watch and iPad Air models. He expects the new Apple Watch models to have a similar form factor as the Series 5, with a key new feature being blood oxygen sensing. Kuo believes the Apple Watch will not receive a significant redesign until the second half of 2021 at the earliest.

In line with previous rumors, Kuo said that the new iPad Air will feature Touch ID integrated into a side power button, which will apparently pave the way for an "all-screen" design like the iPad Pro. Kuo expects more new iPad models to adopt this feature starting in 2021.

Okay, so Apple was one of the first (if not the first) companies to put a 120Hz display into a tablet. But Apple doesn’t include it in the iPhone 12 because:

A) They want people in forums to complain.
B) So that Samsung and Huawei can brag “we’re first”.
C) There are technical and/or economical compromises.

We’ve seen this movie many times before: facial recognition with plain images, ARM Windows, why do you remove the headphone jack...

No it's turned off by default, because it's such a huge battery drain. Even Samsung itself says "Standard Refresh Rate: 60 Hz, get longer battery life"

That's the reason Apple hasn't used it in its iPhones. Nobody will praise its screen, if the battery life is cut by 25%.
Also the battery is to be smaller in all 2020 iPhones.

I will not upgrade from my iPhone X until they bring back touch ID. Even before mandatory face masks, Face ID was a useless add-on making the phone impractical to use use since it is unable to read faces in common lighting conditions and situations. I have a lengthy password for security reasons. I would love to go back to a 5.4" phone if I could.

You Are using price as an argument? Are you kidding me?
they will always use price. That’s what they’ve used every single time since the original iPhone.
Apple users in 2007: how can they charge $600 but not have any 3G.
Apple users in 2008: how can they charge $400 but not have any video recording capability.
Apple users in 2010: how can they charge $700 but not have any 4G.
Apple users in 2011: how can they charge $700 but still have a 3.5 inch display.
Apple users in 2013: how can they charge $700 but still have a 4 inch screen where is every other phone is going past 5 inches.
Apple users in 2016: how can they charge $700 and not have wireless charging.
Apple users in 2018: how can they charge $750 and not even have a 1080P display.

i'm totally puzzled how the refresh-rate-fetishist folks survived this long... i mean almost none of their computers supports 120hz, but spec wars, here they come

High refresh rates have been around for years. If anything, it's taken the phone industry a lot longer than TVs, and before that, monitors. PC gamers have long enjoyed high refresh rates. People were even overclocking their CRT monitors to 75-90Hz back in the 90s. It just provides a much better visual experience.

It just blows my mind why people don't see (or don't want) the benefit of 120Hz, aside from some (IMO) minor drawbacks like some reduced battery life. Everyone here who has a newer iPhone can take (slo-mo) 120fps video. You literally aren't seeing that 120fps video properly since you don't have a 120Hz display; having a 60Hz screen defeats the purpose of capturing a 120fps video at all.

Ya know, they could just make it slightly thicker, like people have been asking for, and then put the killer 120hz display in it with a big battery.
The problem is Apple has this perverted obsession with making their products thinner, even at the expense of features and quality of the product.
Perverted? Phones have been getting thicker. Look up what the thinnest iPhone was. it was 7 years ago and they haven’t been getting thinner.

Yeah Apple also used to slow down older iphones in purpose to ''save the battery'' WITHOUT telling us...!Did you forget it honey?

Serious question. Why are people so bothered by 120Hz (or the lack of)? 99.9% of people would not notice the difference between a 60Hz display and a 120Hz one. It's like all of a sudden 60Hz isn't sufficient for people's needs.

Honestly, have you looked at an 11 Pro Max display and thought 'what this is really lacking is 120Hz'. Honestly the display is beautiful as it is. Even if some of you can notice the difference, it will be such a negligible difference that not including it really shouldn't be a disappointment or deal breaker.

Thats why the thinnest phone Apple ever made was designed all the way back in 2014, and has gotten steadily thicker ever since.
The latest iPhone 11 series from 2019 are all thicker than the iPhone 5 from 2012.
That’s why The iPad 3 was thicker than the iPad to, just to add a retina display.
That’s why the current 16 inch MacBook Pro is thicker than the previous 15 inch, to fit in better speakers, microphones, and keyboard.
But go off about how Apple only cares about thinness, despite the majority of their product lines actually getting thicker over the past eight years.
Beat me to it. Damnit

go get a 120 hz phone for 20 minutes and then come back to tell us what you think...

As I said, it’s good that there are phones out there with those options, but it’s not what the iPhone is like. About others saying ”iPhones don’t even have 120hz”, Apple has never cared about that, they’re used to it (screen size, bezels, OLED, NFC...) and has never affected their sales.

Guess I'll be skipping the 12! First model skipped since the 5.

Interesting. I presume you went from X to XS Max then?

Because the XR/XS had *way less* in the way of improvements.

At least the 12 will be bringing a new design, both a smaller size and larger size, more options in the way of 4 devices, purportedly thinner bezels on the Pro models, Lidar (usefulness of this remains to be seen), and camera improvements all around.

5G is useless for people who upgrade every year (as they’ll be getting it on the every future iPhone they buy) or those who don’t have 5G access, but it will be useful for those who hold on to phones for years as a future proofed feature.

And if rumours of the A14 performance prove true, it will be a bigger improvement over the impressive A13, than the A12 was over the A11.

Just curious what drives one person to opt out on upgrading annually when this year the phones have more upgrades, even if no 120hz, than previous generations have had

You don't think I'd have already seen a 120Hz phone before posting that?

I couldn't tell the difference and have very good eyesight.

Again, why all of a sudden in the past year or two has 120Hz suddenly become an issue for people and phones? Like when the iPhone 8 came out, I can't remember a single person complaining about refresh rate. It's like people think 60Hz is suddenly unusable or something.
