I have a 6s and have been reluctant to update as the 6s keeps getting iOS updates. I'm running the iOS 14 beta and it's still very smooth. The battery is bad, but I have a battery case that helps me get through the day. I haven't been tempted by a new iPhone in years but think it's time to update. I'm trying to figure out what exactly has improved since the 6s that has radically changed the iPhone experience. I understand there have been improvements to speed and the camera and the home button has been removed in favor of a new unlocking method, but what else is new that makes the iPhone fundamentally an improved and more modern experience?

I’m curious how you arrived at that judgment.

Barely any true 120fps content exists at the moment except for maybe on YouTube. And I can think of only one or two movies filmed at HD 120fps (Billy Lynn and Gemini Man). HDMI 2.1 isn’t on any devices yet for 4K 120fps.

I have a 120Hz TV too. But what you’re seeing right now on your TV is largely frame duplication using 3:2 pull down based on 24fps content. The result is “fake” 120fps, and isn’t indicative of what real 120fps is.

Regarding the iPad Pro, it’s 120Hz but also LCD. LCD doesn’t hold a candle to OLED response times (or micro LED, if we’re talking the future).

Trust the pro-120Hz crowd here. Once people start recording and watching actual 120fps content using 120Hz OLED screens, people will never want to go back to 60Hz (on the iPhone) or LCD (on the iPad).
He's trying to convince himself its OK not to have to have it. This is a typical response from people so they don't feel bad about it. Next year when it comes out, all the people that said "not missing much" will then tout, "wow amazing." Lots of bias here giving apple a pass when really they shouldn't. Pretty laughable if you ask me.

You all seem Apple brain washed.
I was given an Oppo find x2 pro 120hz 3k screen 65watt charging 5G and lasts all day with edge to edge display and wifi 6 so it’s possible. Apple only just got rid of John I’ve so they need to catch up as he was blocking the way. Apple just know people will still buy there outdated phone because there Apple and stuck in there bubble. Android software is terrible but I like the apps a go along with it as it more interactive then apples. But I too am stuck in the bubble but in Australia you can sell your phone to a 3rd party and pay out what you owe and upgrade every 12 months easy. Just wish Apple would come out with an oppo like screen ide be happy.

Biggest screen ever on an iPhone and better cameras... So that's it, Apple? That's all you got? Useless.
Same notch you had 3 years ago. That's lazy.
So basically there will have been 3 S years in a row. That's pathetic.

In saying that, I thought the iPhone 11 wouldn't sell well. It did. So even though I'm coloured beige, I'm guessing plenty of 7, 8 and OG Notch owners will be excited to upgrade.

After my initial disappointment I came to realize that I don’t even notice it on my iPad Pro and therefore I am kind of okay with it by now
I use my 11 Pro and 12.9 iPad Pro back and forth all day, and I don’t notice the 120Hz refresh. Where I notice it is going between my older iPad Pro 12.9 and my 10.5 or 2018 12.9 iPad Pro. I think the smaller displays of phones make it harder to notice.

With that said, disappointing Apple can’t make that work this year. I imagine Apple faces HUGE economies of scale issues when introducing features that most other manufacturers simply don’t have. How many iPhones are sold per year next to the next single model Android device?

So, basically the iPhone 12 is really the iPhone 11S all along. I guess the 120Hz + narrow notch will be the highlight of the redesign for the iPhone 13/“true iPhone 12” phones next year.

In other words, the only reason, it seems, that Apple is going to be calling this year’s phones the iPhone 12 is because of the 5G radios and 5G capability. I think that if 5G wasn’t the headlining feature, Apple would’ve touted these phones as the iPhone 11S, don’t you think so too?
While I agree, nothing groundbreaking here, the phones will have a nicer iPad Pro/iPhone 5/5s aesthetic. I personally really like the stainless steel frame on my 11 Pro but would rather it be squared off/chamfered like the iPad Pro. The 2018/2020 iPad Pro design is a work of art considering what it’s packing (bend issues aside).

I'm taking the risk of sounding like a total idiot but...

I don't see any lag at all in the animations on my XR.
Would 120 Hz really make that much of a difference? I believe I never tried it.

Yes, design and visual features are important for me. I'm the kind to notice the details.

You could have Apple replace your battery for $69. and keep your phone for another 2 years. What you are missing out on though is Face ID and OLED Screens. If you like to take photos, the camera has jumped up nicely as well.

Would this really mean bad battery life or Apple keeping in pocket for next years big thing. Seems like once again if Apple wanted to deliver the best featured hardware, it would have happen. Not the bread crumbs.
The other phones, this year, that have 120hz have to reduce the resolution to show that mode and there is significant battery draw. There is supposed to be a new type of display (LTPO) available next year that can display 120hz at full resolution. Apple seems to have decided that it was not worth doing a half-assed job of it this year.

Yes, absolutely. Why would anyone not? The washing machine I chose came from the manufacturer I preferred with the exact feature set I wanted that paired with the matching dryer. I made a conscious choice to get the exact hot water tank/heater I wanted from my plumber, too. Same as buying a computer or a car. That's a lot of money to spend to commit to using something every day for years that you're not completely satisfied with.

Unless someone is independently wealthy, with the free cash to throw around at endless upgrades and new models every year despite a lack of need, I can't imagine how anybody could spend $700+ on a smartphone that they intend to keep for 2, 3, or more years; and not make a conscious effort to understand exactly what the options on the market are and exactly what they're buying.

The average person doesn’t get into granular tech specs when buying appliances or smart phones. You said your washer had the feature set you wanted from the manufacturer you preferred. The analogy with smartphones is that some people prefer Apple and the feature set they want is iOS (the “ecosystem”). I seriously doubt you compared the type of motor in your washer to the type in other models that maybe were quieter, or of newer design or whatnot. You likely focused on reliability, customer support, and features that actually impacted its function in washing your clothes. The non-tech enthusiast buyer (I.e. the vast majority) could care less about 120 Hz refresh rates and probably wouldn’t notice the difference. That doesn’t mean they don’t know what they are buying, they just judge the product on other factors that actually impact their own personal experience in using the product.

Oh you will, next year when Apple finally bring it. But until then, you won’t.
Okay? I just always thought faster refresh rates really only benefitted larger displays.

Look if Apple missed the boat on bringing it then its an oversight for sure.. not defending it.. I am just asking a general question. Doesn't a fast refresh rate only benefit larger screens?

Why does Apple have so many excuses and problems fitting in technology that none of the other phone manufacturers seem to have.

OLED display came late, edgeless design came late, wireless charging came late. Samsung didn’t have an issue putting 120Hz OLED display in the S20, why does Apple need to wait another year? It’s all BS

It used to be they waited and then implemented those new features the best way possible, but that’s no longer the case.

As for the iPad Air with Touch ID, that actually interests me. I would have preferred under the screen but have to see how it feels in practice. The only thing now is to see if it includes 4 speakers like the Pro, that’s a deal breaker for me.

The price of the iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard is basically the Macboor Air. I would rather go for the laptop at those prices. My iPad these days is purely for content consumption like couch browsing and the odd movie.
One big reason is volume. Apple sells huge numbers of phones at the same time using the same parts. Often, new tech cannot be produced reliably in that volume in the first year or two of availability.

As for the 120hz displays, current phones with it have to use a lower resolution when in 120hz mode. The new LTPO displays that can do full resolution at the faster refresh rates are supposed to be available next year. It appears that Apple does not want to do a half-assed promotion display this year.

your 6s doesn't have the full marketing hype of the latest iPhones. So you should feel inadequate.

🍿🍿🍿 It’s fantastic how many posts there have been on this article / thread.

I’ll admit that ProMotion is nice— but it’s not too jarring for me when I use my first gen iPad Pro that lacks said screen technology as it appears to be for others. As for my phone... I really think the smaller screen is the reason why I don’t notice a noticeable difference in the smoothness of my 2018 iPad Pro and my iPhone— that and perhaps I’m just not using anything that would take suitable advantage of it (games, etc).

Yesterday’s luxury becomes today’s necessity, right? I also love how many have made up their mind on a product that hasn’t even been announced. These analysts with supply chain intel take so much fun out of these new product announcements, but then at least people can either be pleasantly surprised by a keynote or at least lower their expectations and be less disappointed in the actual announcement ;)

As for myself... I’m clearly hard up for some Apple product announcement excitement based on the number of pages of this thread I read when I don’t have a major opinion on this subject :D

Is it just me or is there nothing interesting coming in 2020? Probably due to COVID. I finally have money to buy some new gadgets and there's innovative worth buying.

Just depends on what tickles your fancy.

Apple possibly has a lot in the pipeline for this year— some rumored items are new (AirPods Studio, Tags) and others are incremental updates (iPhone, non-pro iPads, maybe Apple TV, maybe smaller HomePod); I’m also really interested to see Apple Silicon Macs. Some things I’m looking forward to aren’t rumored to be updated till next year— iPad Pro, iPad Mini, etc.

I think a lot of technology is just maturing and we’re not seeing the leaps and bounds we had previously become accustomed to.

I’m on the iUP train so it’s only a question of which iPhone 12 I get. Aside from that it’s likely I’ll buy at least 1 or 2 of the other releases this fall!

This gets said every year. I think MircoLED is coming in 2022, NOW that’s the phone to get. Although in 2023 the phone will support wireless charging using an air-based approach, allowing you to charge as you roam the house, NOW that’s the phone to buy. However, the 2024 phone is also looking good, it’s going to support 1000hz refresh rates and a camera that matches studio quality, NOW that’s the phone you want.

Here we go.. Apple dont include a feature everyone else has... Apple fanboys declare it as unnecessary despite never having tried it or seen it... wait 12 months for Apple to call it "Magic Scroll" (or similar stupid name) and all the same people on here will declare that "its magical" etc etc. Around and around every year.

A faster refresh rate is noticeable. It does make the whole UI feel smoother - try an iPad Pro or any recent Android phone. It also opens up high refresh rate gaming.

It not a gimmick, it does work, its very available, and for the insane prices Apple charge, everyone in the market for an iPhone should be p**sed off that the 2012 iPhones dont have it.
