the bump necessitates a case that covers the phone itself - what's the point of the expensive metalwork and colorizing if it has to be covered?
EVen without the bump, most of us use a case because it just takes one drop to crack/chip/scratch the very slippery phone and a case helps prevent that from happening and makes it less “impactful” when it does.

Awesome! I say bring on the far better camera. Big whup as far as the "bump" & weight. The 13 Pro's camera is killer and I can't imagine how good the 48 MP would be. Bring it Apple because my wallet is ready.

More mp doesn’t equal better. I know it’s like beating a dead horse and all.

Yeah, it's just getting comical now. I simply can't see the point in getting an iPhone with Pro Res 4K/8K film ability if it takes longer to download the film off my iPhone, then it does to process it on my new MBP, with it's fancy fast built-in AS SoC Pro Res processor. Come on Apple, you kicked USB-A off the MBPs due to it being "old tech", even though USB-A peripherals are still as common as mud, and will continue to be for a long long time (due to the simplicity and lower cost of implementing USB-A vs USB-C, particularly for the myriad of for use cases where USB-A is plenty fast enough); but hang onto the proprietary, slow as a snail, Lightning cable, just so you can continue charging your Apple Tax fee to 3rd party cable manufactures. This is where greed gets in the way of killer products, and starts to impact good will and sales. And no, a completely portless iPhone most definitely is NOT the solution, obviously, again, for speed of download reasons.
They aren’t still on Lightening for cost reasons. Do you remember when they moved from the original to Lightening? Since then, there are a lot more iPhone users, so consequently the potential for more uproar.

I’m sure they’ve planned the change from Lightening to USB-C years in advance — probably at a time when they feel there is enough ubiquity in the standard.

I don’t care either way. I still use an older charging brick for my 13PM.

Gah. Ridiculous. The industrial design team has lost all credibility to me. Once the pinnacle, now just rubbish. So many alternative options they can do to the back:
Teardrop shape
Even/equal height across the top ridge (at least it won't wobble!)
Taper from the top towards the middle
Wedge shape from top to bottom

Slightest bit of effort of the brains will produce a far more reasonable and effective design.

They're just being lazy at this point.

Well, even the Otterbox commuter case has to have a slight bump around that... ?

Remember: case manufacturers use psychological and emotional tricks to make you feel stupid/careless. You aren't. Do you put a case on your car? Your computer? Your S.O.? Of course not, and you handle them with care. You're not an idiot like these manufacturers think you are.

I'm just happy that Apple will apparently keep selling the iPhone 8 indefinitely.

Because..... they can't walk back on camera specs. Imagine Tim Apple standing on stage telling people how the new iPhone 15 is better because the camera has less megapixels and a smaller aperture. Nah, won't happen. And you can't just "shrink" optics. I'm rather confident that we've come as far as we'll reasonably get in terms of lens miniaturization. So this is it. Either bump forever or they will commit to the iBrick eventually to get that sweet whole week battery life as well. Since .... yeah, apparently the only two metrics people consider when buying their phones are camera and battery life. ?‍♂️ I'm old, I guess.

Why not make the phone thicker to compensate for the larger camera system? It seems like the iPhone camera will intentionally never be flush again.
Personally, and this is just my opinion, but idc about the bump anymore. I like, 95% of users, always put my phone in a case and it sits flush anyway.

Additional, I always put my phone face down, so it also sits flush that way. At this point, I just want the because quality video/pictures I can get. ESPECIALLY, in low light.

All the cases I’ve seen (that I would actually ever consider buying) including the Apple cases have a camera bump for the iPhone 13 pro. So I don’t understand this “just put it in a case” response.

I don’t really mind the camera bump on my iPhone 13 PM but I do think it would be nice if Apple could get creative in their solution instead of just continuing to increase the same square camera array in the corner. Look at the pixel 6/6 pro. Love or hate it you have to admit they found a new approach to the ever increasing camera size problem and it has some benefits (no rocking).

I find this logic very strange. Those are very different items and one is a living breathing human with their own will and life.

My computer, even my laptop isn’t moved around in one week as much as my phone is in one day. I am not taking my laptop every where I go. Additionally is easier to hold and not drop because of its size, but still maybe people do put full cases on their laptops.

You car does have a case in a way: will it’s bumpers and it’s removable / replaceable parts, but you could argue that a garage is essentially a case for a car. (Once we go full EV and have batteries / solar to charge them…the garage will be like a docking station in a way)

Until phones come with a grippy rear and sides…. The case will live on!

so the selling point will be 8k video? will the iPhone pro screen be in 8k too? why is the Studio display only 5k? and my home TV only 4k?
I do know that Pro's move over to 8k, but what's the point for the iPhone?
Better tele zoom capabilities would be a selling point for me, but 8k is not ...
8k is mostly for content creators that can crop in afterwards. 5K displays are so you can edit 4k at native resolution and still have editing controls on the screen. Also a lot of 8k cameras have displays that are no where near 8k, the iPhone doesn’t need that kind of resolution for shooting video.

Great, then the phone will wobble even more. ?
On the other hand:
The car? Yes, I would totally drop my car from the table to the ground without the tires to absorb the impact and then perhaps perform a few barrel roll on the way.
The computer? Yes, I would also pull the iMac from my pocket and drop to the ground while exiting the vehicle at table height as well.
My S.O.? Well, not sure I even want to know what you were imagining about putting the S.O. on the table. ?

I have 3 dSLRs and whole bunch of lenses. I also have a bunch of other cameras too. By far the camera I use the most is the iPhone.
And I regret it bc I have some nice shots that can never be blown up bc of the low mp. A higher mp camera really would be quite an upgrade to me, how about yourself?

Apple sticks to lightning people complain that they should use USB C because everything else does. On the other hand, if Apple switch to USB there will be an uproar of users complaining about "needlessly changing from lightning" and "Apple making users buy new cables".

Even/equal height across the top ridge (at least it won't wobble!)

Isn't this something a few Android devices have tried? I presume there must be a practical reason for all the lenses being in the corner, rather than across the top.

I was actually looking for thin case without bumps around the lenses (I usually go caseless, but for the first few months I use one.) Struggled to find anything as they call have bumps to protect the lenses... I used to just stick glass/film protectors on the back which helped a little bit.

Higher MP is probably for cropping/zoom. e.g. Effectively take a photo @48MP and crop down to 12MP for a 'free' x4 zoom. I believe that's how the Samsung devices used it.
