Exactly what benefits will you get from USB-C? The only thing I could think of is faster transfer speed but that would only apply if you’re using it a lot for video. I don’t so perhaps that’s why I don’t really see this as an issue
Mostly just the convenience of having one charger for all my devices.

IF they do switch to USB-C by end of 2023, they will be 3 years behind the curve. The iPhone should have been USB-C in 2020, 2021 at the latest. The fact that the iPhone 13's are not USB-C is dumb. Build a laptop with all USB-C Ports, an iPad with USB-C, but don't put USB-C on the thing that matters the most, the phone.

Technically Apple did introduce an entirely wireless iPhone in 2021 with magsafe charging, OTA software updates, eSim, and airpods. You would be surprised how many people never actually plug their phone into anything from the day they buy it.
This is me actually. Have the Belkin MagSafe stands for my desk and nightstand, MagSafe puck for travel. Only time I have to use Lightning is for my car as I don't have wireless CarPlay.

Well I personally don't like the type see they can get easily damaged with them having all the prongs in there I think every phone should personally runt the lightning charger from iPhone and it don't charger faster with type c if anything it's just now catching up because it usually take 3 hours for my friends to charger their androids and my phone when dead literally hr and half tops
Charging speed for the most part isn’t really affected by the port. I’m not sure what’s the limit is for USB-C but lightning will charge at 20 W. Maybe this will be more relevant when battery technology improves. Yes I realize there are android phones with 100 W chargers but most of this is just to make the spec sheet look good and isn’t practical because the battery cannot sustain 100 W.

If your friends are having problems charging their android phones perhaps they should consider getting a new adapter that plugs into the wall. Most newer android phones will handle fast charging.

I love Lightning and always have. It has that secure fit, it’s minimalistic and I’ve always had consistency with no charging infrequency with lightning, however; I do think there needs to be a stronger consistency across Apple’s product line with the iPad, iPhone, AirPods, etc. It just will make it consistent for the user in the ecosystem without having to mix & match cables. I’d say this rumor is completely accurate and right in line for 2023, likely with the iPhone 14 be the last year to support Lightning included in the box.
Do you love a lightning cable with the burnt out / black power connector that doesn't quite work? That's the typical end of life for the lightning cable

I already have this except for my iPad. People say this but they act like the one charger can only be USB-C.

You could have one charger for everything and it could be Lightning. If anything USB-C is going to take that away. Right now I have my AirPods, AirPods Max, Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Apple TV remote that charge with Lightning.

Until Apple started this transition everyone on the Apple ecosystem had one charger for everything except for the MacBook. That was MagSafe and thankfully someone in charge at Apple has some brains to bring it back.

I can understand if you’re using an iPad Air/ Pro a lot or perhaps an older MacBook that charges with USB-C. Neither one would work with lightning.

Could care less about 48mp cameras, pill shaped cut outs, 8k video, etc.

THIS (usb-c connector) would get me to upgrade from my 12 pro.

Just so tired of trashing dead lightning cables with the burnt/black power connector. Yes, I've been magsafing it when I can, but sometimes you need pedal to the metal charging. Here's to hoping for 25 or 30w charging when usb-c rolls into town. It's like when you need to turn charging up to 11, you know, for that little extra umph

How exactly are you burning out power connectors on your lightning cords? I’ve been using them since the iPhone 5 and have never had any lightning cable burn. This sounds like something is going seriously wrong with the AC adapter.

Perhaps you’re using cheap unsafe AC adapters? You need to be very careful because some of those can put mains voltage into your phone. That has caused people to be electrocuted. I use Belkin or Anker and never had an issue.

MagSafe addresses your first issue of proper placement/inconsistent charging. That said, the battery health of my 12 took the biggest hit out of any of my previous iPhones that used wireless charging, and I used the MagSafe charging every night. When I upgrade to the 13, I went back to charging via cable.
After charging problem (mostly lint in the connector and burnt out power pins on my lightning cables) I switched from cable charging to magsafe charging to preserve my lightning port. Every I use the lightning port I feel like I'm wearing it out, its a horrible feeling after years of lightning port non-connectivity for power issues

Obviously Apple will transition products from lightning to USB C over time. Apple invents proprietary stuff when the standard thing isn't good enough. Eventually, the standard catches up and Apple adopts the standard. In the meantime, the lightning connector has been a joy to use for the last decade instead of mini or micro USB.
Micro-usb makes me cringe. New products are still using it in 2022. The horror

It was bound to happen. I’d rather that than going cordless/wireless.

Does this mean other devices (Keyboards, Trackpads, Powerbeats Pro etc) will follow suit? If not, then the EU has just wasted everyones time.
EU is an expert in solve problems at 50% or creating more problems.
There is no EU law that solves anything.

USB chargers was something but you could release an adaptor.

Usb-c is only for phones (as is more expensive) but other devises uses mincro/ mini / usb B ETC…

Cookies alerts is just the biggest fail in tech ever

Apple will ditch its proprietary Lightning port and switch to USB-C on all or possibly some models of the iPhone 15 lineup destined to launch in the second half of 2023, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today.

USB-C-Over-Lightning-Feature.jpg

Since the iPhone 5, Apple has kept the Lightning port on the iPhone, despite much of the industry moving to USB-C. In a tweet today, Kuo said that the latest supply chain survey indicates that Apple will ditch Lightning in favor of USB-C in 2023. Kuo noted that USB-C would improve transfer speeds on the iPhone and improve charging speeds.

Kuo had previously said that Apple would be sticking with Lightning on the iPhone for the "foreseeable future," saying that switching to USB-C would be harmful to Apple's MiFi business and has lesser waterproof specification. Now, Apple has reportedly changed its tone. One possible reason for Apple's change in heart is pressure being placed upon it by the EU.

The EU continues to move forward with passing new legislation that would force Apple to adopt USB-C on all iPhones, iPads, and AirPods sold in Europe. Such legislation, if passed, would require Apple to either ship specially designed USB-C equipped models of its products to Europe while keeping the rest of the world stuck with Lightning or adopt USB-C for all of its products globally.

Most of Apple's iPad lineup already features USB-C for faster transfer speeds from accessories such as cameras. For photographers and cinematographers, a demographic Apple has been keen to target with its high-end iPhones, the Lightning port represents a bottleneck for transferring large video and photo files. A move to USB-C would ease that workflow, make it easier to transfer files and be supported by a broader ecosystem of USB-C accessories.

Initial speculation was that Apple would keep the Lightning port on the iPhone until it's ready to go entirely port-less, relying simply on MagSafe to charge and transfer files. MagSafe was first introduced on the iPhone with the iPhone 12 in 2020, so it's still a relatively new technology to the iPhone. The pressure being placed by the EU may have forced Apple to reconsider its timeline for moving entirely portless, requiring it to comply with possible upcoming regulations and move the iPhone to USB-C.

Right on target. When Apple launched the lightning port with the iPhone 5 back in 2012, Tim Cook said, "This is the port for the next 10 years". The ten years with end this September, we might even get basic iPads with usb-c in March 2023.

Can anyone innovate beyond USB-C ?

Legislation will simply follow. The core concept here is not to "force USB-C" but to standardize away from proprietary controlled by ONE corporation. I know we are Apple people and all of that but generally- all throughout history- letting one company have total control of just about anything is generally bad for consumers... especially if that company is huge and growing ever-larger.

So look beyond the specifics and see that the core concept is an attempt to serve all consumers. USB-C is likely to cost consumers less over time because as a more open standard, there is more competition for all things related to it. USB-D, E, F, G will all likely offer the same (broad competition driving down consumer costs)... as opposed to perhaps a hypothetical Lightning 2, 3, 4.

Contrary to our reflexive-but-consistent-as-death & taxes action of "anything/anyone vs. Apple on any matter must be wrong," in general, GOV is fundamentally trying to help their people. They can do terrible jobs of it at times- even make things much worse than before- but the general goal tends to drive such actions. If we could mentally remove Apple from this issue and sub in someone else- imagine Samsung has a proprietary "thunder" connector and the EU is "forcing" them to switch to a standard like USBc- would we feel as passionate about protecting Samsungs proprietary jack? If no, then we're letting our halo bias cloud our judgement on this issue.

The only loss in legislating away proprietary for a mostly superior standard that will generally cost less alternative is some licensing extra profit for Apple as things shift away from proprietary prod dev. In the grand scheme, this can't be much profit and Apple will probably barely miss it. In fact, Apple being Apple will probably just jack prices of the phone to cover the loss and then some for "complying with GOV mandates"

Eventually, we might get to a day where we consumers can carry ONE cable instead of 2 or 3 and it works with all of our stuff. If Lightning could have been that, Apple had many years to make Lightning THE jack on Macs too. Instead, even Apple themselves split on where to apply one vs. the other. Select iPads have since followed. It doesn't seem to be a huge burden on Apple to take iPhone there too.

As long as we argue for one thing with some stuff but are OK with another thing for other stuff, we all bear the burden of dongles/cables clutter to try to be ready for whatever we need. The sooner we embrace ONE standard, we might be able to finally get to "one cable to rule them all." Apparently, these GOV actions show at least some people are tired of waiting, either because their voters have told them so... or they think their voters will appreciate this action made on their behalf.

The faster speed is USB3 standard, NOT USB-C. USB-C is just the physical connector, and can still be used with USB2 cables and controllers (giving only USB2 speed obviously). So USB-C by itself != faster speed. Pretty much all mid-range Android phones or lower on USB-C are still USB2.

The benefit of USB-C connector is just compatibility. With Macs and iPads all are going USB-C, it would be nice to have one cable to charge all Apple devices. And it's even better if one has other devices where USB-C is becoming the universal port.

But Airpods is still lightning.... ?

You can still charge the new MBP via usb-c. I never use the MagSafe charger because my MBP is plugged into the display via usb-c most of the time anyway. I guess it depends on what you own ?

MBP = usb-c
iPad Air 4 = usb-c
Samsung Galaxy = usb-c
Nintendo Switch = usb-c
iPhone = lighting ?

Actually, my AirPod Pro are also lighting but for some reason my case only charges wireless now, even though the lighting port looks fine, so I forgot about that.

Thus, when I travel I need to take usb-c cable, lighting cable, Apple Watch charger and now a mat for my airpod that refuse to charge via lighting

Apple makes money off proprietary cables that don't last very long. They won't just let that income go. Expect something to be done on their end that will make their USB-C cable different than others. Maybe they will make the plastic that goes around it a different size that makes regular cables not work or maybe they will replace the income this makes with some other thing that will end up costing more on those models. They also have the option of introducing a technology that piggy backs on the USB-C standard to do something regular USB-C cables cannot. They could change things up and only allow connecting to monitors using their cables instead of everyone elses because it will require some chip that is only on their cables or anyone who pays them for the fee to use that. Nothing is beneath them at this point. They are not going to lose money on this switch. They won't allow it.

I don't think they will make it EU only, but you know if they did someone would spin up web store offering grey market Euro spec phones in the US.
The EU rules are... silly and misdirected. Its far less important what socket devices have, esp. with wireless/inductive charging emerging) c.f. ensuring that the adapter has a USB-A or USB-C port and follows standard charging protocols).

However, I think they are a bit of a side-show, and Apple will switch to USB-C when they want to.

There are plenty of other arguments for USB-C on iPhones. Not least, Apple is already using USB-C on Macs and some iPad models, so even if the lightning connector has a few mechanical advantages they're rapidly becoming outweighed by the pros of USB-C.

I suspect that the greatest impact of the EU is to scotch any prospect of a "Lightning 2" connector (maybe a 16-pin connector rather than Lightning's double-sided 8 pin) that could support USB4 emerging.

NB: I'm not a fan of only having USB-C on anything bigger than a MacBook Air - but it makes sense on phones and tablets where 'universal' ports. and a certain amount of dongleization, are inevitable.

USB-C is not faster. Pretty much all mid-range Android or lower with USB-C are also USB2.0 speed.

True, just using a USB-C port won't make anything faster - and many implementations are USB 2 only. However, whereas Lightning connectors and cables supports 2 data pairs, the USB-C connector can support up to 4 high speed data pairs plus a USB 2 pair - so the potential is there for faster connections and, indeed, the USB-C equipped M1 iPad Pro supports USB4/Thunderbolt. With an increasing emphasis on video and photography as the Unique Selling Point of the high-end iPhones, it would make sense to echo this (or at least USB 3.1 G2) in future high-end iPhones.

EU commissioner Margarethe Vestager knows how to play hardball, so Apple better ducks and covers. So sad that this takes until 2023 to happen. If intelligent people would lead Apple, at least the 2022 iPhone14 Pro would switch to USB-C and Apple would join the common charging standard without pressure.

I don't like an additional law for a charging standard, just because of Apple.

But even if Apple moves to USB-C, DMA will hit em hard. So you know, it would be better for Tim to be a first mover. iOS could be changed in a way that allows competition while Apple maybe earns even more money by monetizing its services.
But with Tim, everything Apple has become a bit long in the tooth. The structures are old and rotten, Apple build a monstrosity of an office, the "Circle" and teams have grown. Apple was always known for small teams, nowadays people like to work in home office and love flexibility.

But flexibility is nothing Apple has to offer, so it needs to be broken ...
