Night Mode is software driven yes, but it’s only on new devices with A13 chips.
I’m sure it’ll be on the new SE since it has the A13 in it according to this rumor.
The XR have A12 Bionic, and Dark Mode.

genuine question...what was amazing?

Moving from a 6 to an 8 the amazing part was the usability. The 6 is just dog slow (it's barely faster than a 5S and has a higher res screen) and has only 1GB of RAM. Not to mention it still has Touch ID 1, which just pales in comparison to Touch ID 2. Everything just works so blazing fast and it's a joy to use, where the 6 was a chore to use.

Now would of moving from a 6 to even just a 6S or 7 also been amazing? Probably, but the A11 chip just made it even more amazing.

The other improvements like better screen, cameras, speakers and wireless charging were also nice but it really comes down to that CPU/GPU/RAM upgrade.

Why does everyone think an "iPhone 8 form factor" means the size of an iphone 8? It can be the size of the SE, but using the shape and curves on the 8

Sounds underwhelming and disappointing.

This is just Apple re-using the iPhone 8 shells that they probably have a crap ton of.

Ugh.
If I wanted an iPhone 8 shaped phone I could go buy one right now
You can buy the 2 years-old 8 today, with its A11 processor and shorter lifespan of iOS updates, or get the SE2 in 3-6 months for $50 less and gain an A13 processor in the process.

What's not to love?

Clearly those who don't get this aren't the target audience, we're the buyers who refuse to shell out $1k+ for an iPhone 11 Pro but who are not buying the 8 due to its relative age because it's just not a great deal nowadays (there are better options on the Android side in that price range). So Apple is making a move, the entry-level iPhone sells like hot cakes and they'd be dumb to not renew the great SE adventure.

We just want a solid iPhone that does everything well-enough, that isn't on that fattening diet devices are on these days, AND that doesn't cost a kidney to acquire.

Correction: The iPhone 8 has an A11 chip rather than an A10

I don’t see the fuss about one handed use. How often and what kind of situations would require you to use your phone single handedly so often that it becomes a necessity. For those that may have a disability I can see why it would be a key feature.

The majority of situations when you use your phone properly you will have the other hand free to use it two handed. You cannot use it while driving, you’re not going to cook holding your phone etc.
What!!! This is the craziest thing I’ve read in awhile! How about people who have a life? Who have kids? Who carry groceries? Who are laying on their back under their car or under their house? People who have a drink in one hand? The only way to accomplish this, outside of being able to grip and use the phone at the same time, is to use a pop socket or ring. C’mon I know you can think of situations where it would be useful to have a completely one-handed phone.

These cheapy phones are getting so powerful, I can't see much reason for most to buy the flagship models except for show and bragging rights. I have the iPhone 8 at the moment. I'm looking very closely at the SE rather than the 11, as it appears the SE will do just about everything I would use it for.

And I don't give a crap about bling.

iPhone 8 has the A11 though, and it will be good for 2 more years, i am sure. I have the 8 Plus with the same chip and i have zero worries about the chip being too slow one day. It's different with the A10 chip though, glad i do not have the 7 Plus.

This makes ZERO sense... especially if they continue to sell the 8 for $50 more.

For them to lower the price by $50, then update the inside to the same CPU specs as the 11 is strange.

If SE owners (like me) wanted a bigger phone, we'd get an 8. I gave up my Plus sized phone specifically because I want something SMALL.
SE2 will, most probably, replace the 8 and become the cheapest gateway to Apple AR glasses experience.

- i hope it does not have a headphone jack, but as the base model in the iPhone line it likely will have one.
I’m curious why? Like your desire for some continued use of your lightning cables collection you’ve had for less than a decade, I’d love continued dongle-free convenient access to the myriad of audio components with a 1/8” jack that I’ve had for 4+ decades (and will continue to use for another few decades). Especially if Apple hires a real genius designer capable of making a watertight headphone jack, why not retain this universal port that’s not going away outside of the Apple world anytime soon?

Too bad it's only going to be 128GB, but that would probably cannibalize existing 11 sales. That would be a great successor to my 7, but I'm going to go big and get an 11 Pro 512GB. My son will get my 7.

Will they really call it the SE2? Or the "New SE"? I'm thinking they might go with "iPhone 11 Air".

Many people misunderstand the reason for the existence of iPhone SE in the first place. The fact that it was small was never the point, the low cost was. The iPhone 5S chassis was the most cost effective way of achieving the desired cost at the desired profit margin. Sure, this was very welcome by the people who wanted up-to-date spec in a small form factor, but this was a coincidence.

In the same way, iPhone 8 chassis will be the most cost effective way of achieving a similar brief currently, which is why MCK's supply chain intelligence reflects this.

I realize that this is quite disappointing to users who want a small phone, however judging by the portfolio of the top manufacturers there doesn't seem to be a case for small phones with premium specs currently.

Im sure they are much happier than people paying high price for the junk.

It is probably the time to upgrade my 6S+ when the SE is available.

I saw a mock-up comparison on Forbes - looks like a good compromise.

That rumored 5.4” might work for me...we’ll have to see what it actually ends up being.

I hope next gen iPhones are taking the flat sides and aesthetic from the latest iPads that harkens back to the iPhone 4/5/SE lineage. That’s my favorite design look and feel by far.

I also echo other concerns on weight. The newer iPhones continue to march in the wrong direction here. They all seem to be heavy thick “bricks”. I really dislike heavy handheld devices.

I updated my daughters SE to iOS 13 the other day. How any adult would want that to be their main phone is beyond me. Now we'll transition from the tiny phone gang bemoaning no SE2 to bemoaning that SE2 is too big.

You guys are H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S!!! 🤣🤣🤣

You assume everyone has the same priorities as you, and uses their phone in the same way. For some (perhaps many) a phone that's very easy to use one-handed and very easy to stow in a pocket trumps sheer size. Not your choice? Great. But there's no reason to crap on others' preferences.

That sounds horrific.
The slippery bar of soap 6/7/8 forms were the worst iPhone shapes of all time if you ask me.

My bad, you're right - still, an A13 device has a longer life ahead than an A11 device.

In those scenarios the use of the phone should be the last thing on your mind, you should be focusing on the task at hand. If you’re carrying a child or groceries I’m sure that one text or phonecall can wait until you have both hands free. A mobile phone is for your convenience not the people trying to contact you.

As you’ve mentioned you can get a pop socket and that aids one handed use. The Reachability feature and the option to slide the keyboard from left to right all aid one handed use on bigger screens. Majority of the public want the bigger screens now which is why they sell better.

Even before iPhone screens began to get larger I used two hands for the phone. Typing is just slower and less efficient one handed. The only one handed use of the phone I ever do is browse Safari.
