It’s great to have an entry level iPhone for low income people. Not everyone needs an iPhone 11 Pro.
Let me tell you something, I know quite a few rich/very well off people and with a couple exceptions they don’t have the best, latest greatest anything. Wealthy people don’t get wealthy by spending indiscriminately. They are all smart folks who spend wisely. It is very unfair to say that the SE is for poor people.

The SE was popular because it was small. I have a XS and the only reason I gave up my SE was because it was getting long in the tooth and I didn’t think Apple was going to release another SE in the same size and form factor.

I don't want an 8-sized phone like everyone else here but a large percentage of us will begrudgingly buy it because it's all Apple will give us.

Cue Timmy Cook's smug face at the next event when Apple in all their hubris will then go on to tout how successful it's been like they gave us what we want.

There is 0 small powerful phones in the market. Small phones = cheap phones today.

Only the SE was a small and premium phone.

Its remaining stock was sold in less than 24 hours, so it seems there is actually some market demand.
If there's actually real demand for it, there will be an Android OEM catering to it. But in reality, even $100 Android phones are now having 6" or lager screen. Sony has given up, and only have their "small" Xperia 5 as a 6.1" phone (albeit at a much taller aspect ratio), and Samsung S10e is actually 5.8" large.

I believe what people want is not smaller screens, but a phone with better grip. Ie. the physical width of the phone is what matters, not the actual screen size. Sony is testing this with their Xperia 5, but we will see how long Sony mobile will last.

Imo, the replacement for small phones will be wearables. We're just in a vacuum right now where wearables are still developing technology wise.

WOW! If they can get it that price point, this will likely be their best seller.

$399 - iPhone SE2
$699 - iPhone 11

DAMN!

Well, the iPhone 8 is already $449 and 64 GB. This would remove 3D Touch, upgrade the CPU by two generations*, and cut the price by $50. Good deal, but the current iPhone 8 is already a pretty good deal, actually.

*) which probably adds ~2 years to the longevity

This is a fantastic price point! But it really does nothing for existing SE users. I don't carry a purse so my phone goes in a pocket and girls get smaller pockets than guys. It won't fit in my cycling jerseys unless I put it in sticking straight up (and possibly hanging out). It would never fit in a saddle bag.

I would give up features to get a true smaller form factor. Really, an updated processor would be nice.

Yup. For better or worse, market demand for what used to be common phone sizes (~4 inch and below) just isn't there.

Yup. Give it a few more generations, and something like an Apple Watch, Apple Glasses, AirPods, whatever will fulfill the traditional phone use case of communication. Meanwhile, the "phone" will really be for interacting with a screen.

(One might even predict that by 2025, what we call a "smartphone" now won't really need its own cellular data at all. Instead, your wearable provides the hotspot.)

What we need is an 5/5S/SE-sized device with an edge-to-edge display...

Also - no way the SE2 will have the same processor as the iPhone 11 (A13). That seems ludicrous.

I don’t see the fuss about one handed use. How often and what kind of situations would require you to use your phone single handedly so often that it becomes a necessity. For those that may have a disability I can see why it would be a key feature.

The majority of situations when you use your phone properly you will have the other hand free to use it two handed. You cannot use it while driving, you’re not going to cook holding your phone etc.

I use my phone one handed the majority of the time, its how I like and have always liked to use my phones. Again people do things differently.

Ignoring that the original SE had the same processor as the iPhone 6S (A9).

Controversial fact, apple made the iphone SE for people who want to spend less money, NOT for people who want a smaller form factor.
Actually, Tim said something like 60% of existing iPhone owners were sticking with this form factor at the time, and they realised the larger phones were mostly being sold to people who had never had an iPhone before.

I agree it would be nice to have an SE2 in the smaller size because I know some people want it, but the point of the SE2 at $399 is one, and only one thing:

Services

They want more devices to sell more services, easy as that. Adding a small SE2 would be smart for them, but the lower price point is critical.

Enough with that "small hands" b*******t. Are you a dwarf? NO? Then your hands aren't ****ing small ...

I have average sized hands and the 4.7 inch iPhone size is too big.

Thats what I've been saying. It brings people into the ecosystem so they can spend on iCloud/AppleTV/Apple Music/Apple Arcade + buy an Apple Watch.

Apple would probably make more off drawing 3 people in at the cheap price and then have them spend on services then drawing one person into the 11 Pro range for example.

Apple is going create a smaller phone in 2020, it just won't be as small as what most people in this thread are asking for.

iPhone 12 Pro 5.4'
iPhone 12 Pro 6.7'

Personally, I am looking forward to going from my 5.8' Xs to a smaller phone. I'll bet you a signed dollar that it will still be $999 though for 64GB ;). It will have 5G, but to be honest, I could care less about 5G.

128GB standard will probably come with 2021 iPhone 13 Pro.

Wouldn't a Pro 5.4 be smaller than a 6/6S/7/8 series iPhone? Somewhere between an SE and an 8... That would probably suit me.

This will definitely test the nationalistic attitude of the Chinese customers when it comes to buying phones in 2019... big time!
Misguided post. Chinese people ≠ communist party propaganda. But anyway, this model won’t be for them as they are the primary market for phablets since they need to watch videos etc. on a smaller device while on the train, for example. Their higher wealth and materialism is another main driver of larger sizes and high prices.

looking good!

- i love the iPhone 6/6s/7/8 form factor (and weight!)
- i hate the notch. dont need Face ID. therefore a button (and bezel) for Touch ID is no problem.
- dont need 5G for a few years.
- love the rounded corners (probably the last of this for a while as trend is towards more squarish shape)
- Haptic touch is just as good as 3D Touch. (i have the 6s right now, and it has 3D touch, but Haptic Touch is just as good in every practical way)
- i only need a basic, single lens camera

but i am hoping it has a U-1 chip that can be used with Find My app. really want this!

- max storage of only 128GB is low for me, but doable.
- i hope it does not have a headphone jack, but as the base model in the iPhone line it likely will have one.
- looking forward to having one last new iPhone with Lightning to get the max use of my Lightning-USB-C cables.

iOS 13 has decidedly killed even 5 hours of battery on my current iPhone 6s.
considering that i bought this iPhone 6s exactly 4 years ago (four !), it has been a really great phone !!!
but i appreciate the possibility of a new model launching within Q1 2020.
I’m sure Apple would custom make a iphone to your specifics if you ask them nicely.
A little “I “ heavy.

I don't see the point when you can just buy the iPhone 8. I highly doubt they'll make a smaller version of iphone 11. On a side note, an iPhone 11 Max with a 6.5 to 6.8 inch LCD 1080p 400 ppi display for say 799 would be quite welcome.

This makes ZERO sense... especially if they continue to sell the 8 for $50 more.

For them to lower the price by $50, then update the inside to the same CPU specs as the 11 is strange.

If SE owners (like me) wanted a bigger phone, we'd get an 8. I gave up my Plus sized phone specifically because I want something SMALL.

Not sure. I know there are people with cardboard cutouts on YouTube that have the 5.4 size but I've yet to see it compared in the same video against a iPhone 8/7/6S.

Nice. At that price, I may just buy one to use as a backup phone and for runs/workouts.

I can see a lot of people going for this. It’s a great price for those who get devices for their kids as well.

EDIT: I hope people realize SE references a throw back to the previous form factor, not size. The first SE called forth the previous form factor which just happened to be smaller than the newly introduced 6 at the time. The 6/6s/7/8 form factor has been superceded by the X/XS/11 (8 probably won’t be produced as an 8 after the ‘SE2‘ is introduced) so using the 8 form factor makes sense.

No way Apple will put the current front screen on the new SE for $399. You’d basically be getting a slightly smaller 11.

I saw a mock-up comparison on Forbes - looks like a good compromise.
