Kuo: 'iPhone SE 2' to Feature Improved Antenna Design, Production Will Begin in Early 2020

Price was not important. I bought it for the size.

In that respect, you’re saying price ‘was not important’, but in emerging markets/other third-party countries, price is crucial. That’s great that you bought it for the size, but Apple intended this phone to be as entry-level as possible in terms of the price, because they wanted it to be an affordable-global phone.

Makes sense to use older, more cost-effective LCP technology on SE2 along with probably an Intel modem.
Should go with iPhone 9 on this, make sure the camera is upgraded as well (just like they did with the SE update back at the time). It'll probably use the 11's Intel (now Apple) modem (which I have to say has given me my bar back at work that was lost with the original Intel modems - 8 & Xr).

They'll sell a ton of these.

Apple got some of Intel's Modem IP, so the Intel Modem doesn't actually belongs to Apple. Not to mention Intel doesn't want to continue Fabbing Modem for Apple, and its design can not be ported to TSMC.

It makes much more sense to use the old and well tested Qualcomm X16.

It doesn't make sense for 2020. A dinosaur: a tiny screen with huge bezels.

Why can't they make a small cheap bezel-free phone (with the notch)?

Next year Apple should release four iPhone 12 models, four screen sizes:
  • iPhone 12-4 (the cheap one with LCD and older components)
  • iPhone 12-5
  • iPhone 12-6
  • iPhone 12-7
The last digit stands for screen size in inches. All the same bezel free design. It would be clean product lineup.

It makes no sense to use the more expensive 3-year old Qualcomm X16 as it doesn’t support dual-SIM. Emerging countries want dual-SIM. Apple also wants to implement eSIM to collect carrier royalties. For example, about 60% of the Indian carrier market supports eSIM.

Intel continues to earn money selling to Apple. The XMM 7560 and 7660 has no other customer other than Apple. Every modem Intel sells helps recover their NRE costs.

1) It's not a "SE 2" if it's the size of the iPhone 8. If anything It's a iPhone "9" or 8S. An iPhone SE has to be diminutive.

2) If it's actually $399 that's a real big **** you to the folks that bought an iPhone 8 between the September 2019 launch and whenever these are release.

I would like a 4" phone with the newest components, thanks. Just because I want a small phone doesn't mean I want it running years-old tech.

Well, that's not new for Apple. They did things like this many times. Eg. the price drop of the original iPhone, the iPad4 replacing the iPad 3, and heck, the SE, having better hardware than the more expensive iPhone 6 when it was released.

But that's the nature of many product cycles. Eg. are car manufacturers screwing those who bought their cars mere months before a release of a new model? OTOH, the lay people probably won't really care that much (that's probably also why Apple keeping the same "old" look of this upcoming SE, so those who bought the iPhone 8 don't feel as bad).

The 3 year old Qualcomm X16 is still in many ways better than even the latest Intel Modem. And it certainly support Dual Sim.

The modem price would certainly have dropped since the iPhone 8 era, not to mention it is the IPR price that matters. Difference features set will have different pricing, and we dont know how is that going to work under the new Qualcomm deal.

And eSim has nothing to do with Modem. You can use eSIM with Qualcomm X16. ( That is assuming Apple put Dual Sim features into iPhone SE 2, I do hope that is the case )

Intel doesn't really earn much money from selling modem, it any at all. Their Fab capacity could be much better used for selling everything else which they are severely constrained at the moment.

4.7” would be the perfect size for me. I love the se but a tad bigger would be nice.

my prev phone was the samsung ativ s (windows phone).

dunno why a se HAS to be small to be a se. If you prefer a small phone, get a small phone. Suckz thats rhe se2 might not suit you but well thats life.
for me 4,7” is stilleasily handle/managable with 1 hand.

A 40mm screen is getting a bit small:

but I do like the overall size of my SE and wish that Apple had kept a compact phone in their line up. I don't see much chance of an SE2 fulfilling this need.

Well that's the trick ain't it? I've never designed a phone, but I expect that fitting all of the highest performance components (along with the appropriately sized battery) inside the smallest possible body is likely the hard part.

Substitute 'small' for 'fast' & I think you're about there.

Whatever happened to the premium edge to edge iPhone that Apple was rumored to be releasing in 2020. It's supposed to be about the same size as the SE, is that not happening?

Still happening according to Kuo. The 5.8 Pro becomes 5.4, and the 6.5 Pro Max becomes 6.7.

But the 5.4 will be about the size of the 6/7/8 (a little less wide and a little less tall, though thicker). It won’t be the size of the 5/5s/SE.

That’s part of it, but the engineering triangle isn’t the main reason we’re not seeing 4-inch phones. The market clearly is. Various vendors have tried selling such variants, and they were never that successful.

So, it’s an economies of scale issue.

(Yes, some wanted the SE for its size. But most because it was a good deal — it had the then-current A9.)

It’s odd everyone here is complaining about size. I know quite a few people with the se, and they all bought it for price.
And I know quite a few people who bought the SE pretty much exclusively for the size.

What now? Does our anecdotal evidence cancel out or is one of it of more importance because someone says so?

Forget the name. Not important. What is important are the features and price.

Some of you keep harping about the name. Give it a rest already and focus on something meaningful.
Like on preferring a smaller phone which actually can be used with one hand and better fits in someone's pockets?

The market does not have a need of the smallest iPhone Apple can make.
...according to your extensive and sound research?

I still doubt whether there will a real SE2, is it possible that Apple might just announce the hardware upgrade of the current iPhone 8 on the keynote? just guess......

This is clearly a iPhone from the 11 family, a lower end version but still a A13 product.

They should call it iPhone 11 Mini. That is one of the most usual Apple names for lower end vesrions and the phone is supposed to be actually smaller than the iPhone 11.
