That said, Face ID seems unlikely to go away. I frankly don’t care for it, but with my Apple Watch, they’ve finally gotten the Unlock with AW working really well to the point it’s not a major concern.

Is it possible to turn off Face ID and use the watch to unlock, or will it default to the passcode only in such circumstances?
Do you know if apps which accept Touch/Face ID will permit the watch to unlock them?

I thought this said under-screen Face ID at first glance.

Wonder which will happen first, the return of Touch ID, or USB C? :p
Well, I have no real need for Touch ID anymore but if it came back under screen for those who need it, cool. As for USB C. I hope that happens about the same time that the sun expands to overtake the earth during its final death throws, so a few billion years from now. Lightning >USB C.

At this point I prefer Face ID anyway. As soon as I raise it to my face and it’s already unlocked. Very seamless, it’s not perfect of course but it’s almost like there is no security with how fast it is.

Yeah that would be great for things like financial apps. I'm actually surprised that this isn't an option in settings for any app that you might want to extra secure access too, like if you just hand someone your phone to look something up, they shouldnt be able to open your email or messenger apps, etc... It would be nice to have either FaceID or TouchID pop up.
Just use “guided access” to lock them to the browser.

Can’t wait for Apple to add this

It would be great to have both Touch ID and Face ID to use as a two-factor biometric authentication for users who want added security on certain apps or to even unlock their iPhone as well
That makes no sense. They’re both essentially the same thing. You’d be doing the same thing twice.

The best touch unlocking is on the back of the phone, not interfering with other buttons and functions, just pure simplicity. You unlock with your index finger that has no other function at that time, on the way out of pocket or wherever, no delay, no nothing - sometimes the best is/was already here :)
Through a hole in the case?

I would argue that it's not an issue, but a benefit. I hate how Face ID tries to authenticate when I'm just holding my phone in my hand and walking around. It keeps retrying until it runs out of attempts, then I am forced to enter my passcode when I go to actually use my phone.

The benefit of Touch ID is that it only tried to unlock when you wanted to unlock. I never had false attempts because I controlled whether my finger was on the home button.
This is a misleading comment as FaceID will not authenticate unless it detects a face. Now if it did not read one’s face due to poor angle it will attempt to re-authenticate similar to TouchID if someone had a wet finger or something else. At the end of the day FaceID is faster and more convenient. I have had very few misreads with it and it was due to a narrow field of view compared to my iPad. When is iPhone going to get the same FaceID wide view as the 2018 iPad Pro, it’s 2022 already what is going on at Apple.

You already have two factor - you have physical possession of the phone. You have to both provide your PIN (or a biometric scan) and surrender your phone for someone else to get access.

The next step is three factor - which would be mandating PIN _and_ the biometric. This is pretty rare, because there are such trade-offs with both which make for an occasionally user-hostile system. PIN or biometric is more accessible, and people can understand the implicit requirement that you have the phone in your possession in order to use information within it.

Financial apps typically do their own manual 'ask' for FaceID/TouchID or ask for the remote account password on use. Somewhat frustrating, as I have no intention to ever surrender my device (I'll just google search for that information you wanted myself, thanks) and don't want the hit of FaceID as I have lower positive matches.

Computers might have a 'guest mode' for people to use devices without surrendering your account security, but phones and tablets typically do not.

I really hope USB-C makes its introduction on iPhone 14/Pro as it’s due time. With 512GB and 1TB+ in future iPhone’s sticking with lightening connector does not make sense from a bandwidth and capabilities perspective.

Yep, works like a charm, even more sure thanks to the "hole".
The issue with TouchID at the back of the phone is that if it’s resting on the table the mechanism is inaccessible and if it’s in the power bottom it’s at an awkward angle. One could use FaceID but at that point what was the purpose of have TouchID.

The issue with TouchID is that is require interaction and is not automatic like FaceID. As one is already staring at the screen to authenticate is quick even while wearing gloves in certain conditions whereas with TouchID one has to reach their thumb or finger to initiate an action and with gloves is just another added step.

Of course, the obvious solution is to include both FaceID and TouchID options on a single phone. Seems like that shouldn't be too hard to do. I prefer Face ID as well, but this could make everyone happy.

Meh. Just put a TouchID button on the back of the phone. They've got so much unused real estate on the back of the phone. No need to turn the front of the phone into a digital version of the Kowloon Walled City.?
