When did under screen touch ID rumors first start? like 2 years before the iPhone X? Which was then released in 2017 without it...

And the rumors just keep coming back ever since... but never materialize...

2024 feels like a long time to wait for a foldable phone. I understand that Apple likes to wait and see how technologies work for other companies and then swoop in and make it work better, but I feel like foldable phones will be pretty mainstream by then.

Pandemic asides, I think a faster Face ID that also works at larger angles is a better overhaul solution than Touch ID.
How about while yawning? Laughing? In the dark on my nightstand? In my pocket? Laying flat on my desk 2 feet away? While angled toward a checkstand paypoint reader?
FaceID is just a failure. It works in so many fewer situations than TouchID. Just because a tech is cool and impressive, doesn't mean it's practical or an improvement.

I don’t understand all this hype about TouchID coming back. I just sold my 12 Pro and currently using a 7 Plus, and TouchID just seems such a step backwards compared to FaceID. Also I don’t understand why they’d implement TouchID with FaceID, it’s redundant

Please, no foldable phones. We've spent years getting rid of troublesome fragile mechanical components in smartphones. The last thing I want is for phones to go back to that.
Where do people get this stuff from? We've spent years getting rid of fragile components?
We've spent even longer looking for new use cases and new materials to cover those use cases.
Let them research and experiment - that's how we ended up where we are now anyway.

Owning an 11 Pro Max, and an iPad Pro 12.9, I'd go back to TouchID in a heartbeat. I'm getting a bit hacked of with having to position my face in the right position for the iPad, and getting "Camera Covered" messages. I liked being able to unlock my devices without even having to look at them.

All that I want is a foldable iPhone. The good news is to know that as I have anticipated, Apple is on the right path on this. The bad news is that we have to wait 3 years for that to happen.

Not content with epic fails predicting what would come out this year, the Rumoratti are hard at work predicting two years from now. Just quit clicking on links about predictions. Maybe they will go away.

I am very skeptical about Touch ID coming back to high end iPhones.

A foldable phone seems like a throw back to the clamshell vs. candy bar phone days. Now if you are talking about a phone that folds or rolls up like a piece of paper ok, let's hear more.

You can really claim anything is “going to happen” if you also also claim “Apple changed their plans” after it never materializes.

This just in: In 2023, Apple will introduce a phone with Sound ID that unlocks when it recognizes a user cutting a fart.

Given what Kuo predicted for last week, I'm stocking up on grains of salt for this latest.

Please, no touchID anymore, inscreen ir wherever, it’s dead
Touch ID is so dead that Apple put it in the iPad Pro and Air, and the MacBook Pro and Air, and the Magic Keyboards

I don’t think Touch ID is coming back to iPhones.

If Apple putting Touch ID on a bunch of new devices is any indication, it will be back on the iPhone at some point.

Instead of investing millions of dollars on under Screen tech they could just take the power button TouchID part from the iPad Air and iPad mini. Cost: $5. Time to implement: 2 weeks.
Rewrite the authentication algorithm:

If (face visible) use FaceID
Else if (mask on) use TouchID
Else fail login
This should definitely have been at least the interim solution. I am frankly flabbergasted that Apple has not addresses the issue of masks at all this year. They had more than a year to do something about it. They have done NOTHING (I don't want to hear about unlocking with Apple Watch - haven't got one, don't want one). Face ID was not even mentioned during the keynote and it is barely mantioned in the promo materials for iphone 13. It's absolutely clear now that masks are not going away any time soon. There needs to be a method to quickly authenticate with masks on. Apple not doing anything about it for 2 more years is a major fail.
