I think many will be waiting for 2020 before upgrading.
2019 might turn out to be one of the leanest years.

Definitely feeling some schadenfreude toward those complaining about the 2020 XS potentially going smaller to 5.4" after seeing people constantly say "boo hoo people don't like small phones anymore" or "just get the SE." It's still bigger than I'd like, 5" would be just about perfect, but I'll take it. If people want a monstrosity of a phone, get the 2020 XS Max. This news definitely solidifies my plan of holding onto my 8 for a third year.

And that rumoured iPhone 8 refresh in 2020 for people liking smaller screens is still on?

Yes to the 5.4"!

Yes to anything with the iPhone body dimensions not exceeding those of iPhones 6-8! I guess they could fit 5” in them by removing the bezels?

Let’s hope smaller than 5.8 is a rumor.

I can’t imagine going down in screen size.

I can’t imagine it going up in screen size but down to an XR version.

I can’t imagine a bigger plus size when plus is already too big, it’d be a silly phablet.

This, where's the middle ground when I'm already used to my X's size? Would be really stupid to make me go up an entire inch or down almost half.

I'm sold on the camera upgrade and the possibility of USB-C. Anything else will be gravy.

Can't really see USB-C happening on the iPhone. There's just no reason other than compatibility with chargers for iPadPros and MacBooks, which is a very tiny portion of the iPhone customer base.

Getting so close to that iPhone SE size. Hopefully 2020 will have a "iPhone Nano" ready to go.

No a long way to go to get it down to a 4.7" display that would fit inside an SE-sized case per the below graphic.

It would be the size as the current Iphone X since the Actual Screen Area on that phone is 5.4"

Sounds like by 2020-21, Apple would have figure out how to put all their FaceID under the screen or it will take a very little room

Yes, and the iPhone X is about the size of the iPhone 7.

If the screen is smaller and faceID goes under the screen, the device's physical dimension will be smaller then, no?

If they use PWM in these displays, I will look at alternatives.

STOP USING PWM!!!
I’ve not caught up on this thread yet so my apologies if this has already been pointed out but it may still be possible for you to use an OLED display that uses pwm if Apple stops doing their little patented process that slows burn in. I think that’s what may be making us sick. To my surprise I find I can use OLED displays just fine. But whenever a manufacturer like Samsung, does some tweaks, I run into difficulty with looking at the display. I’m not able to get more specific about what these tweaks are and what they do because the few rare mentions I’ve come across aren’t very informative. I just wanted to say whatever it is that is extremely problematic with the Apple OLED displays is not likely standard pwm alone.

There's are times where I would love an XS like when its docked for driving and other times like sitting on a train but I don't know if I could ever deal with that thing in my front pants pocket. Im currently using iPhone 8 without a case and it's glorious for size in my pocket.
The iPhone 8 and the X/XS are essentially the same physical size with a much bigger screen...

Does anyone care about next years iPhones? We’re still 3 months away from this years yet!
I do. Pretty much this years is that square camera and a spec bump. My XS is still going strong and this years iPhone doesn’t wow me enough to upgrade. I’m looking to Next year for sure though.

That was perhaps my plan, getting a new iPhone in 2020 to replace my 2016 iPhone 7 Plus, but my considerations were the XR replacement vs the Max replacement.

Because none of the 2019 iPhones will likely have 5G, I probably won't be buying.
If the 2020 XR replacement doesn't have 5G, I probably won't be buying.
If the 2020 Max replacement doesn't have a decent price structure, I probably won't be buying.

However, my 7 Plus is getting long in the tooth. Here's hoping the 2020 iPhone Max is more decently priced, or else gets 128 GB at the entry level (although I doubt it).

Not really. The XS has a bigger footprint than the iPhone 8 both in terms of width and height. The hypothetical 5.4" iPhone would be closer in size to the iPhone 8, but a bit smaller than the iPhone 8 in height with a similar width.
With the same screen aspect ratio as the XS/XR/Max, a 5.4" screen would measure about 2.26" x 4.90" or about 57.4 x 124.5 mm.

Assuming a screen bezel/frame size of about 8.5 mm, that means the phone dimensions would be about 66 x 133 mm.

iPhone 5: 58.6 x 123.8 mm
iPhone 6: 67.0 x 138.1 mm
iPhone XS: 70.9 x 143.6 mm
iPhone 5.4: ~66 x 133 mm

IOW, this hypothetical iPhone 5.4" wouldn't be anywhere near the iPhone 5/SE size. Not even close. It would be quite close to the iPhone 6/7/8 size though.

Amen. I’d rather Apple used the higher ppi count screen of the 8 plus screen upgraded to a ‘Super Retina 2’ than a OLED with PWM.

I think everyone's feeling that the 2019 iPhones are going to be the same iterative spec bumps to the iPhone lineup as the past few years have been. And while there are most likely going to 3 cameras on the back that ship has long sailed past from other manufacturers. Exactly what is there to be excited about?

Apple needs to not only catch up again but to also surpass a lot of great phones out there that come in at smaller price points. Not only that, they need to start competing in the mid-range price point as opposed to solely at the top end of the flagships. All their work in the services areas will come to naught of they lose their device sales.

I wonder if the current XR will stick around to compete at the (high) mid-end?

Unfortunately Apple has a track record competing at the mid-end by simply price cutting older models.

Fortunately the XR is pretty great and it still will be later this year.

5.4" screen on a smaller iPhone would mean that the notch size (or at least the width) will be reduced.

6.7" is just too big. The 6.5" is more than sufficient.
At that size may as well be holding a Mini up to your face.
Not happy about that at all.
Do not want to upgrade in September but might now so I can keep the current Max size.

I struggle to understand why this phone is so desirable in this community. I don't think anyone cares about it outside these forum boards. If that thing was popular, Apple would had to make sure it is produced.
I could see the appeal of a small/cheaper phone but the last time tried it, it was a total struggle. I had a loaner SE from my employer and the small screen its a real struggle (keyboard, mail/messages app, safari, etc)

Welcome to a starting price of:

5.4" = $1099 (128gb), $1249 (512gb), $1399 (1TB)
6.7" = $1299 (128gb), $1449 (512gb), $1599 (1TB)
6.1 = $899 (64gb), $999 (256gb)

That's the reality we live in...

I guess if I work hard and show ambition I might make it up the ladder to assistant night time manager and be able to off set this premium. One can only hope that they aren't still stuck in todays reality that far down the line.

I'd like USB-C, but OLED tech is still dealing with burn-in.

I'm starting to see it on my Note8, and I do not leave that thing on for extended periods.

The burn in relates to how Waze displays on my screen, and I only use that for daily commute.

LCDs do not have this problem, so hopefully Apple will continue to offer the Xr in LCD form.

He already told us last year and earlier this year.
I'm talking about Kuo giving us more details such as any leaked colors, battery capacity, possible resolution increase, higher refresh rate, etc.. etc.. I am aware that a triple camera iPhone is on its way.
