Am I misremembering or was Lightning not up for consideration as the USB-C spec ages ago, but did not get chosen?

With the upgrade, iPhone 15 Pro models will be able to transfer video files and other file types at quicker speeds, with Kuo predicting a significantly improved user experience.
... for those users who actually use a wired connection for data transfer (not just charging). I'd venture a guess that the vast majority of iPhone users that don't hang around places like MacRumors, don't do wired data transfers - they use WiFi.

This will be a boon to those (relatively few) shooting a ton of RAW photos on their iPhones, and to people using it to shoot large quantities of 4k video (like the occasional group shooting actual movies on the iPhone). Both of those groups are likely to opt for the Pro models anyway, for the better cameras, so they'll have fast USB3 transfers. The other use would be for migrating between phones, but that's not exactly an every day (or every week, or every month) occurrence. Other than those two cases, most average users will be served well enough by using WiFi.

The biggest complaint that I've heard consistently on this forum over the last few years regardiing cables/connectors has been, "Lightning means I have to carry an extra cable!" - I can't recall much in the way of "Lightning is too slow!" that wouldn't be solved by using a Pro-version phone (that is, most of those complaints were from people already using Pro versions of the iPhone - like people shooting large volumes of RAW photos or 4K video).

As long as I get thunderbolt speeds for a device I’m gonna splurge £1000+ on I’m fine with that.
It’s sad that they won’t even bother to go 3.1 on base models though, but that’s expected from the new Tim’s “nickel and dime every penny” Apple…

I skimmed the first page, then jumped ahead; sorry, not sorry...? ;^p

Apple wants folks shooting ProRes video on their iPhone 15 Pro Ultra with a 10x optical zoom and 60MP cameras; the full speed USB-C is for tranferring the footage to your 16" M3 Pro iPad Pro and editing on DaVinci Resolve Studio, because Apple cannot be bothered to bring their own edit suite to iPadOS; oh wait, we got macOS Lite for iPad Pro now, and FCP is still macOS only...

Thanks, Obama...

I can't imagine a portless iPhone complies with the new legislative requirements?

And now I'm wondering, what exact wording did they use... ugh.

Yeah the portless phone is the big question and the exact wording is probably for lawyers to argue but I saw the MKBHD video the other day which goes into his expectations and talks a bit about this. Spoiler alert, he recons that they'll hold onto lightning (at least according to his video editing) until the iPhone 17 when they'll go all portless.

He raises some good points but I disagree that they'll hold onto lightning for that long. By Jan 1st 2025 Apple cannot sell any iPhone with a lightning port (in the EU) which must include all legacy devices still on the menu. So no iPhone 14 on sale by Jan 1st 2025 unless they release an updated version with USB-C down the line.

Anyway, my long rambling take on the timelines aside, his video and the EU article mentions specifically devices "capable of being recharged via wired charging" (here on page 27/28) so the argument could be that there are already things in those specific categories like keyboards and mice with AA batteries, or earbuds with contact cradles that do not use a wired charging solution.

So if all that's true, does Qi wireless charging come under that same umbrella as a device that is not capable of wired charging? maybe.

Airdrop works fine, I shoot 4k 60 high res videos and it’s fine I wouldn’t ever use the port to transfer data, no one even uses ProRes
No one uses ProRes you say? Jee I wonder why? At the studio, we use it. The amount of detail added to video footage is absolutely perceptible. But wired transfer speeds are longer than a typical family dinner.

Airdrop is always acting flakey on me so I just connect my 12 Pro w/ a cable. I've never thought it was slow transferring 4K video. I'm sometimes sending like 30 5-10 sec clips over all at once.

What are you doing that requires the highest quality but you are only using an iPhone? or are you mixing footage with other cameras?

I mix iPhone w/ Canon R5 footage a lot at work. I'll probably upgrade to a 15 Pro next year, interested to see how much better the video will look.

On one hand, this stupid decision will never affect me since I would only ever get the Pro model anyway. On the other hand, this is still a stupid decision. Either way - VERY overdue. At least it will make the Pro device start to feel like an actual Pro device. Shuttling data back and forth at, you know, 2022 speeds and not 2002 speeds is going to feel like a real game changer for those who wisely continue to rely on wired connections.

If the Pro models are due to get some sort of enhanced USB controller, maybe they’ll get support for even faster high-wattage charging too. The pro phones would look weak in the company of Samsung phones that can do, say, 45w charging over USB-C when iPhones are limited to 20w and now they can no longer use the excuse that lightning can’t support anything higher

So what. You need differentiation between the tiers of phones. You pay extra for heated seats to be activated in a car even though in many cases the circuitry is already there.

The last time I plugged my phone into my computer with a cable was to Jailbreak it I think.
This is something basic in 2022.

If they do that then it’s bollocks, USB 3 speeds aren’t special and neither is high refresh variable rate displays, these are basic features and have been for years now.

USB 2 by next year will be 23 years old ffs, using that in a premium products is beyond embarrassing, hell even USB 3 next year will be 15 years old!

If Tim had his way years ago he would have kept the lightning connector to the pro models and left the regular ones using the 30 pin and probably kept retina screens a premium feature.

Most of us in this forum are "Ming Chi Kuo".
Apple has become too predictable. What happened to that "One more thing"?
Where is the feeling that yes, technology has developed a lot this year? Now a days they're comparing performance with 3 years old product and selling them with old chips. Let people have the latest technology even in baseline, because you are selling them at premium price. Actually Apple could skip baseline entirely as they themselves prefer that people buy pro versions. I miss the days when iPhone has just an iPhone in the lineup. I would prefer a lineup like;

iPhone SE ( 5.4 inch OLED with face ID or touch ID on the button)

Last years iPhone pro at lower price

6.1 and 6.7 inches iPhone Pro and Pro Max

And a 6.7" or 6.9" iPhone Ultra ( prefer other name than copying Samsung) with Titanium case and enough power to pull the Moon! Maybe capable like Samsung Dex and run MacOs when you dock it!

That is very cheesy of apple to do.
This is a company worth almost 2.5 TRILLION dollars....what a bunch of greedy jokesters.

USB 2.0 in 2023? Definitely feels like a Tim Cook decision.

Yes, if he can save $0.01 per phone by putting in a USB2.0 controller, he will. Decisions like these have reduced the respect I have for Apple.

I recently picked up an old apple charger, it was a nice delight to see how you can pull those 2 tabs and wrap your wires around it, I liked how small the plastic thing on the cable was used for managing the length of the cable. All those small things are gone.

$1600 Studio Display comes with 1m cable, not even 2m.

This all sounds very sane, very logical and something within expectation. But how many times have they done something as expected?
No it doesn't. Whom do you "survey" on Apple's secret hardware plans? Not any supplier, who signed an NDA and wants to stay in business. He's just making stuff up.

So far the iPhone Pro models differentiated by screen size, display technology and camera. The chip was the same in all iPhones, even down to the iPhone SE of the same year. Maybe packed with less RAM and a graphics core switched off, but nobody put in the effort to design and build an extra chip with a slower I/O controller for the cheaper phones. They didn't even put last year's chip in a new phone, for that you have to buy last years phone with last year's name.

There's no incentive for Apple to deny any new iPhone Thunderbolt speeds, if the SoC supports it at next to no additional costs.

People who don’t buy a pro won’t notice about USB 2.0. I literally never connect my phone to a computer. Literally the only people that care are people that do a lot of digital video editing and those people will buy the pro model.

I really don’t get why people get so upset over inconsequential stuff. Want fast speeds? Buy a Pro. Want a feature Apple doesn’t offer? Don’t buy an iPhone. I’ve never been like “Oh no, this company won’t do what I want them to do.” So what? Don’t buy it if you don’t like it.

It’s still sad a company like Apple releases products with so many compromises especially now the non-Pro models aren’t exactly cheap. I think you’re right though, if you don’t like it then don’t buy an iPhone and that’s becoming a popular tactic recently amongst people I know. I’m starting to think myself that maybe my future smartphones probably won’t be iPhones eventually.

It would not surprise me in the least if a USB standard released fourteen years ago was limited to Apple’s Pro models in 2023.

You obviously don’t understand analyst lingo. Do you think he calls up suppliers like a Gallup poll? Of course not. Kuo surveys individual employees working for Apple suppliers. Not every employee will adhere 100% to an NDA. Money, drinks, and steak dinners buy a lot of loose lips.

Every year, he’s proven to be accurate. This spring, he predicted A15 for iPhone 14. Some people swore up and down it would never happen and now they’re all eating crow.
