I just left the Best Buy in Auburn Hills, MI and he said they still have grey and silver in several combinations of sizes and carriers. I ordered a Gold or I probably would have taken a silver 64 if they had one for AT&T.

For those of you that want gold or silver and bought gray instead with intention of returning it later. That terrible. There are plenty ppl that want gray and you are "stealing" a phone from them.
There was plenty of word there would be little to no stock and I hope your returns are denied.

That being said. I wonder if the lack of stock is due to the white ID button

Yes, they did.

Creating the impression of scarcity, desirability on the feeble minded. It's smart. It'll work for ~month.

I just don't see them holding back sales to drum up attention. They have plenty of attention and they need to keep share holders happy. More sales = more profit.

AT&T. It doesn't matter where it was at regardless. Licensed apple carriers, especially AT&T/Verizon/sprints should have FULL variety at launch. How can you be such a profitable company and FAIL to deliver on DAY1!!!! I can understand 10 of each color, maybe even 5 of each color, but ZERO of 2 out of the 3 colors???.....

Lol. ^ questioning a multi billion dollar company.

I have your answer. Because you and everyone else will still buy the iPhone 5s.

Their returns won't be denied within 14 days.

And personally, I don't blame them for purchasing space gray when the other colors aren't available.

I wonder if you'd order online using the "Apple Store" app and chose the 'pickup at your Apple Store' option, if the one you'd get from the store would be one the store just normally would have gotten. Instead of extra being sent to the store.

Would this be a better option than just cold-trying in back at the store every so often, do you think?

In store pick up was and still in unavailable for the iPhone 5S. It's not "cold-trying". I've done it every year with no problems.

Don't say a phone is coming out on specific date and not have all the models out for it.

Why didn't Apple just delay it two weeks ? Let the 5C have its moment.

Bingo. I don't mind limited quantities but when both the AT&T and Apple store don't have Gold or White stock to begin the day that is unacceptable. You cannot "RELEASE" a product and not have it on release day.

Fine, they didn't provide enough for the demand and apparently it's wrong to be upset about that. But in reality, Apple should have either delayed the launch or only launched space grey with gold and silver coming a bit later. The part I find crappy is that they severely under-deliver and then act cryptic about it until the store opens in many situations, leaving people screwed. At the store I went to, they wouldn't even tell people until 7:30 AM when they started handing out tickets, that there were only 2 gold phones and 3 silver ones. When there are 300 people lining up for these things, selling 2 and 3 is just a complete joke.

Of course, I'll wait for the devil's advocate who says you can avoid the issue by ordering online haha.

Not mad at the carrier stores. Mad at apple. Not even mad really, more disappointed then anything. Apple needed to allot the proper number of phones out to every store, and if they wasn't ready for launch, they should have pushed the date back, better yet if they didn't think they could have fulfilled stores on launch, they should have never announced a date of release....

I had friends stand in line early morning at our local apple stores and they were told when the store opens only space grey is available.

I am well aware apple creates the allotments for carrier stores but when the brick and mortar store that is supposed to sell a product on a specific release date doesn't have any in stock that's unacceptable.

What I find annoying is that they obviously knew about the lack of gold iPhones. They could have came out and said look, we have a a handful of gold iPhones, chances are you won't get one. The bestbuy where I waited had 1 gold 64 GB Verizon iPhone. The only gold phone. Could they have no just come out and said there's only 1 gold phone?

This location is where I got my previous iPhones and they've always had plenty stock.

I waited since 3am at my local AT&T store for them to tell me at 7:30am that they only had space grey 5S's. My brother proceeded with a space grey but I did not. Drove to my local Apple store for them to tell me the same thing. There was a minimal line.

It makes absolutely no sense why they would release the 5S without supply to back it up. I knew we were in for trouble when they didn't have pre orders for 5S. Obvious that they couldn't make them fast enough.

I totally understand the tactic of limiting supply to create the illusion of demand but Apple has gone to far on this one. I am a very disappointed loyal apple customer.

I really understand your frustration. I truly expected a limited supply of silver and gold phones, but I was NOT expecting the complete scarcity of 'em! My local Apple Store received NO gold phones and only 3 silver. My local AT&T, Best Buy and Target only received Space Gray.

Just goes to show how much the sales reps know because when I called AT&T yesterday, a lady told me she "believes" they were getting all 3 color options. This morning the manager confirmed that there was only one color available (space grey) and that all stores nationwide only got that one color.

Apple Stores don't have sufficient stock either

So your little AT&T store didn't have the one you wanted. Do you really think every single AT&T store is going to have every color and capacity on launch for a very limited item?

If you are so set on a certain color/size, then go to an Apple store for launch. It's well known that Apple stores get more volume and variety than the carrier stores.

That's what I thought until I got there. The Apple Store in Cincinnati only had 7 gold or silver iPhones the rest were all space grey. Even, the folks (minus the lucky 7) in the front of the line could choose space grey or space grey  I should have just stayed at home, instead of driving to Cincy, and picked up the space grey here at the AT&T Store instead.

I was at the Stanford Shopping Center apple store in Palo Alto, ca.

They pretty quickly announced that they were OUT of the GOLD. duh, so is ROW.. but by the time they got to me (#50ish) they also had no SILVER at all, but had made NO ANNOUNCEMENT.. I said, you might want to tell people that there are ALSO no longer ANY SILVER, since there were about another 250 people in line behind me, but they said "they would take that under advisement".. meaning we're not going to say anything because we're pretty sure anyone who can't get GOLD or SILVER is going to take GREY.

I'm sure enough people will just take the space grey when told they can't have anything, else, but I did notice several people stepping out of line just behind me - who most likely wanted A COLOR.

Why? They'd miss an opportunity to sell you a different color that way.

This theory always makes me laugh because Apple's Wall Street performance after an iPhone launch is often closely linked the # of million devices sold, not any illusory demand. They wouldn't intentionally depress their potential sales number for the sake of creating hype/demand.

I agree. There were hundreds of people in line at the Apple Store today and they only had 7 gold or silver iphones.

If they came out and said all we have are black (space grey) iPhones, I would still have the opportunity to get a black phone. My point is, I do not want a black phone, thus me waiting for no good reason in my opinion is dumb. Some people were leaving earlier because of a long line. They assumed they had no chance and tried their luck at another retailer.

Tons of people left once they heard there were no gold, sucks for the people that left earlier. They might have wanted the black and could have got one.

Yeah, I think people would have saved a lot of aggravation and sleep to order online instead of gambling at the stores.

Given the demand for new iPhones on the day of release, ordering online is the best option to get what you really want.

Seems like online is the way to go....but is that also a marketing ploy? Like a push for e-commerce SPECIFICALLY from the Apple website? Getting people to buy directly from Apple seemed like a focus of their business model lately.

I wanted gold the moment I saw Apple's official pictures and renderings. I know if I got another color I would always think, "Well next time I'm getting gold," so I don't mind waiting for it.

I was told you have 30 days to exchange for a different color - I too wanted gold or silver, but both were gone by the time I got to the front of the line. That's fine, I just need to keep the gray one in good condition until they get stock rolling on the gold and/or silver.

Um, yeah, I waited for 14 hours (from 6PM last night), was first in line, and was at the Apple Store, and I didn't get the one I wanted. Out of the 200-300 iPhones they had, they only had ONE gold model. 64GB for AT&T. Of course what I wanted was 32GB Gold for Verizon. I wasn't going to wait there all that time and not get anything, so I decided to get the Space Grey (I was coming from the Silver 5, so I wanted a change-up). I will be going to the store EVERY single day until October 20th (The day my return period is over) at opening so I can try to get my gold one.

Imagine what you could accomplish if all this time was spent on something constructive.
