That was my thought when they announced the 5S couldn't be pre-ordered. In reality I think we can agree that with the 5S being released in so many countries on the same day, there has been too little inventory to go around.

You won't sell many accessories to someone who has stood in line for hours and not been able to buy the phone they came for. They're just fed up at that point.

True, but how many people ordering online add a case/speaker dock etc to their order. When live, most people are rushing to get phone into their cart and checkout as soon as possible.

Yup. Pretty much the same story here, except I wanted the 32GB Gold AT&T and I settled for the Space Grey.

I mean, at least if you were in my shoes, you technically could have gotten the one gold one they had at my store. I didn't even have a chance.

----------

Imagine what you could accomplish if all this time was spent on something constructive.

Like studying for my Chemistry test that I had at 930AM this morning?

I'm not usually a black helicopter / tin foil hat guy, but I won't be surprised if the Gold isn't widely available until after that date for that reason.

Don't you dare say that! But I got it covered, the Apple employees said that technically, I can return this one that I bought October 19th. Wait 5 minutes, and then buy another one and then I have a new return date of November 19th. I paid for this phone full retail price, I should be able to get the one I want.

I went to the Verizon store in Wichita, ks and they told me that NO stores in the Midwest got any! This is the biggest store around here and they didn't get a single gold phone! Not one! I didn't want one anyways but I would have liked to at least seen it. But something is weird with the gold units. Maybe they underestimated the sales it would receive. Who knows!

This was 100% to cause hype. I was reading on the forum last night that some stores had 30 or so gold phones and silver ones as well. I thought I would be able to grab one for my girlfriend given that I was the 15th person in line at the Santa Monica Promenade Apple Store. The employees communicated that they had white ones, but confirmed at 7:30AM that they only had black for AT&T.

I told them how pathetic it was that Apple didn't have at least a handful of every color at launch given that people who are most passionate about the brand have been waiting for over 12 hours. They simply replied "the white ones are extremely popular". I then asked them what demand had to do in this case given that they didn't accept pre-orders until today and we are the first people in line on the West Coast. The employee gave me a dirty look and just walked right past me. I grabbed a black phone for myself, but I felt terrible that my girlfriend waited with me and ended up coming back with nothing. They employees just laughed it off like it was some big joke.

I work right by the promenade, so I walked by the Apple Store during my lunch break and asked whether they happened to get any white AT&T phones in stock. They employee laughed and said that they were super popular and the people waiting in line overnight snagged them. I was like, that's interesting, I was the 15th person in line and they communicated that they had 0 white phones for AT&T to begin with. Again, this employee's attitude changed and proceeded to ignore me.

Based off of how the apple employees were acting (and what they were saying), they wanted to make it seem like people were gobbling up the white phones. I know everyone on here is saying that you aren't entitled to a particular color, but it is so pathetic that the same colors that are getting shipped in 1-3 days via online orders were not available at the store. Way to screw over your loyal customers. Additionally, the lack of communication surrounding stock much earlier in the night/morning is unacceptable.

Extremely dissatisfied with Apple right now and especially the attitude of the "SS" employees standing outside of the Apple Store.

New from Apple...Space Gray...the color you settle for...:D

I was going to get a silver AT&T 32GB, but none were available. During hour 2 in line the Apple employees came through with cards saying that they now had some silver AT&T but in only 16GB. I was sad.

Now, I am okay with Space Gray...it had grown on me. However, I am still worried that the black ring around the home button will look awful in a few months. At least with the silver home button there is nothing to rub off.

What does SS employees mean?

Don't blame the apple store workers. They are just doing their jobs. It's not their fault that 40 people line up for 5 phones. It's not their fault that apple announces a product a week before launch and is not ready to satisfy demand.

I'm pretty sure the apple store employees are very stressed right now. They have no control over their stock and yet have to answer probably 500 phone calls a day to "no sir/ma'am sorry but we are out of stock" and angry in-person customers.

Meaning they had the attitude of german SS officers.

Hmm. Have you ever seen Apple retail store workers? Have you seen retail workers everywhere else? I'd say they're probably the best attitude wise.

I can just imagine how awful it is to be a Apple retail employee. They get paid very low wages and have to deal with the crowds/traffic that many others don't..

They should have been trained how to reply given the supply constraints. The part that bothered me most is how they made it seem like they didn't have it due to high demand which is 100% BS.

Don't say a phone is coming out on specific date and not have all the models out for it.

Why didn't Apple just delay it two weeks ? Let the 5C have its moment.

So nobody should get any because you can't get the exact model and color combo you want. When Ford releases a new car and announces 14 color combinations, there is a safe bet your dealer will only have 2 or 3 of those in stock.

People are being pretty childish about this. Either you want to have it in your hand 5 or 6 days before everyone else, or you want the exact phone you want. Delaying the launch because they were short on a color would be absurd.

Seems like online is the way to go....but is that also a marketing ploy? Like a push for e-commerce SPECIFICALLY from the Apple website? Getting people to buy directly from Apple seemed like a focus of their business model lately.

Gold was a gamble from Apple. It's great in theory, but I wouldn't have over produced it either considering the long tradition of black and white iPhones. They did see the demand today and announced publicly that they are upping production for the Gold model. I'm not sure what else we can ask for.

It's not even that. You simply can't launch a new product when you have retail stores all over the country, and then tell people "we won't have it in these massive beautiful stores you're all familiar with."

People come specifically for the experience of looking at the product in person, holding it in their hands. It would be ludicrous to put out displays of the new product on launch day, and then say: "Sorry you stopped in, but we're not actually selling anything unless you want a 4S"

Apple can do whatever they want. SJ announced the white iPhone 4 months before one was available for sale. If you wanted it, black was it. How soon we forget?

As for anyone else who is whining about not getting the color they wanted... seriously, if you're on this forum, you know about the supply shortages. If you saw that there was no pre-order for the 5S, you should have known it was probably going to be a bit tighter than you had originally guessed. If you waited in line, you obviously gambled, and probably lost. That's on you.

If you wanted a specific model and color, you should have ordered online. It makes sense right? The pool reserved for online orders is for the entire country. Surely that pool would have been way larger than the much smaller droplets that were allocated for your particular store. Either way, it is what it is. You guys can sit on here and whine all week/month/rest of 2013, but eventually this will be forgiven, and forgotten, and it'll repeat when iPhone 6's come out in about a year.

It's pathetic that things that are shipping from China 3 days later are not actually in the US today? Seems like it is just reality.

I totally understand the tactic of limiting supply to create the illusion of demand but Apple has gone to far on this one. I am a very disappointed loyal apple customer.

They've 'gone to [sic] far', eh? Strong letter to follow?

Hilarious thread.:D

#2 in line at my best buy this morning. Was looking to get a Gold 32 GB ATT and felt pretty confident given i was #2. 8AM rolls around for them to come out and tells us all they have is black 16gb and black 64 gb. I had no phone so I had to choose something so not only did I not get my color option, I also didnt get my GB option

You really think if they pushed the launch out by 3 days that it would be different. Hype. They made the gold iPhone feel like finding a Shredder ninja turtles toy in the 90s.

So. You got a black 64GB?

I mean...I don't get why so many people are up in arms about this. The iPhone 5 was impossible to find for a bit around launch too (SoCal native at the time)

Apple should really trust their own marketing, the front page of the 5S website is gold, the intro commercial for the 5S is gold, and they mentioned the "gold standard" during the keynote. So of course most hardcore Apple fans are going to want......Gold. I was thinking of buying some shares today but come. Monday, I think the share price is going to plummet due to lack of initial week/month sales. Supposedly their weekend sales report on target from last year citing more sales overall but sales per store I think will be lower. I was 19th on my line and they only had 2 gold phones. Their total stock was about 150 phones or so with almost all in Space Grey. They had about 6 silver phones which were gone after the 3rd person. I enjoyed hanging out in line but I think Apple will have made a lot of their fans somewhat peeved at the lack of stock and lack of color specific stock.

Unacceptable? Shut up entitled whittle baby!

+1...some of you whiners on this thread are really amusing. You b!tch and complain as if Apple murdered your firstborn child, YET YOU'RE STILL GOING TO BUY AN IPHONE 5S SOONER OR LATER.

Way to send a message to Apple that what they're doing is "unacceptable".

I waited since 3am at my local AT&T store for them to tell me at 7:30am that they only had space grey 5S's. My brother proceeded with a space grey but I did not. Drove to my local Apple store for them to tell me the same thing. There was a minimal line.

It makes absolutely no sense why they would release the 5S without supply to back it up. I knew we were in for trouble when they didn't have pre orders for 5S. Obvious that they couldn't make them fast enough.

You must be new to the iPhone launches...

There's no tactic, they're just extremely popular phones.

I got my 2 gold from best buy but I agree with everyone. I love apple and all but this was Ridiculous. You been shoving the white front with iOS 7 for how long now and both the white phones are short??

This is how nike does business. Make certain colorways limited and watch die hards go nuts. At least they are up front about how limited stuff is.

If you didn't have such bad taste in colour in the first place then this wouldn't be a problem.
