Apple did not do this on purpose. There isn't a bunker in Arizona with 5 million iPhones in it. If they had them, they would sell them. They already have a buzz and they didn't need to create more.

This is definitely the worst stock scenario I can remember for an iPhone launch though. Pretty sad overall.

Then you don't remember the 3G. It was worse than this. Apple created a website to show what stores had what in stock because so many were totally out of everything.

when you put it in a case it doesn't really matter I have space grey and it sweet looking. I will have a case on it soon and never see it again. Like when I got the white 4s. The outer box case made it look black :)

Not surprised considering how many different iPhone models available. Not just with the 5S, but the 5C. We've never had this many different iPhone models at launch before.

Imagine how many different colors, with different storage capacitys, on different carriers. There's only so many Apple can make!

Seriously...

Personally, I get why it bugs people that they didn't get the color they wanted. I would never put my 5 in a case, I like the look too much and i'm very, very careful with my phones (never damaged my 3G, never damaged my 4, haven't damaged my 5 in 365 days...knock on wood).

That being said, if you're commenting in MacRumors I have zero sympathy for you thinking you'd get a gold iPhone if you showed up and were anything other than the first in line.

It was all over the Internet that gold especially was in really short supply, and that the 5S in general was in short supply, that's why they didn't allow pre-orders on the 13th, if they had, they'd have 0 to sell in stores and that looks even worse from a marketing perspective.

So you know what, if you're 85 and you only know how to use Internet Explorer and you've never had an apple device before, fine, you had no way of knowing every retailer wouldn't be overflowing with the 64 GB Gold Sprint iPhone your 12 year old grandson told you to buy.

If you're an adult, and one who's invested enough to come post on here, that you chose to wait in line without doing your homework is totally on you.

Waited at Apple since 2 am then was told around 6 that they don't have the gold and silver ones, only space grey, went to AT&T and they said the same, went to BestBuy and they didn't even have AT&T models at all, went to RadioShack and Target, and they didn't even have the phones period lmaoooo just got worse and worse, so I settled for a space grey from AT&T:eek:

I don't understand why anyone would want to buy silver today. It's just like the white iPhone 5, nothing new or exciting.

Space gray and gold, on the other hand, is something to moan about.

Since my local store in NYC had only 20 golds in stock, and I was 25th in line, I went with space gray. Big deal.

Apparently we are wrong and this is acceptable...

Dear god, you're not entitled to anything. Just order online and wait for your gold colored iPhone that's what I did.

When did we suddenly become this mob of hipsters that's "entitled" to the color they want on lauch day? You're not. You're entitled to what they currently have available, and if you don't like what they have available then you just wait.

Thats the price you pay for wanting to be "FIRST". High risk / low reward.

I got one of each color coming to me Sept 27. Sure, I had to wake up at 3am to do it, but it took 2 minutes, and did it while in bed. I laughed at people on line when I went to work.

Lesson learned. Skip the lines especially if you want color.

Why do you need 8 iPhones? (okay, maybe you just meant the 5s, in which case...Why do you need 3 iPhones?)

And i'd disagree, in the mind of someone who truly, madly, deeply NEEDS a GOLD iPhone, then it's high risk/high reward.

If Apple doesn't have that specific color means AT&T/BestBuy/RadioShack/Target won't have it either, lesson learned.

I think they just misjudged the gold demand. I don't understand how silver supplies were so limited. Maybe they split the white faces between the two.

So 50/50 white/black phones. Then something like 35/15 silver/gold between the white faces.

Demand for gold was high, then when they ran out silver was most gold buyer's second choice, leaving the higher stock of space grey.

I meant that going to a store and rolling the dice on what stock they have is high risk with the only reward being getting it a week earlier. Ordering online guaranteed you gold. Someone I work with ordered all gold for his family (no idea why personally. Too matchy match). The first 2 were 1-3 days and the last 7-10 days. Sure beats the uncertainty as to when a local store will get stock.

Plus now that gold phones are known to be the hot commodity, scalpers with way too much time on their hands will be all over this.

Frankly, Apple needs to do away with waiting at the store BS (it's so 2007) and allow people to order what they want on line and go pick up. But I know they like the free marketing buzz they get from people camping outside.

Alight I'm tired of seeing this thread on the top. Can we stop bumping this pile of steaming sheet? Unacceptable? Shut up entitled whittle baby!

I will be going to the store EVERY single day until October 20th (The day my return period is over) at opening so I can try to get my gold one.

I'm not usually a black helicopter / tin foil hat guy, but I won't be surprised if the Gold isn't widely available until after that date for that reason.

Getting a customer in the store highly increases the chance that they buy an accessory and other items they sell in store.

It's not even that. You simply can't launch a new product when you have retail stores all over the country, and then tell people "we won't have it in these massive beautiful stores you're all familiar with."

People come specifically for the experience of looking at the product in person, holding it in their hands. It would be ludicrous to put out displays of the new product on launch day, and then say: "Sorry you stopped in, but we're not actually selling anything unless you want a 4S"

I'm confused. For what reason?

I bet it had to do with the white TouchID sensors being hard to manufacture. Remember how much problems they had with the white iPhone 4 due to consistency? I bet it's the same problem.

Please remember that Apple started to sell the 5s and 5c in China on day one. China is a huge market and they know that they'll sell a lot in the US. They probably focused on China.

Space Grey was my first and only choice so I'm hoping the "excess supply" of that colour means my order will arrive soon. Order was completed online by 12:05 AM PDT this morning (via the Canada store).

My gut feel is they'll come up with silver and gold sooner than estimated.

That was my thought when they announced the 5S couldn't be pre-ordered. In reality I think we can agree that with the 5S being released in so many countries on the same day, there has been too little inventory to go around.

You won't sell many accessories to someone who has stood in line for hours and not been able to buy the phone they came for. They're just fed up at that point.

With respect, anybody with a brain knew gold was going to be in "short supply", but for large Apple stores to have 1 or 0 at launch is something that I understand people being upset about.
