This is going way too far. If they really were concerned with the batteries being in good health then they might as well ban all cell phones too because the Note 7 is more dangerous than any laptop made in the last decade. It's not even safety at this point, it's paranoia from people who have no idea how the world works. If I'm in a plane for 10+ hours, I better have something to do in the meantime. Well, whatever. Let's hope that this ban doesn't apply to flights within Canada, or else I'll be really pissed.

US Homeland security has no jurisdiction over flights within other countries so I think you're safe.

Your denial of the reality surrounding current issues is what's wrong with this world.

Asserting that global terrorism is not primarily a phenomenon of Muslim fundamentalism is rather delusional.

Ahem... is that what he wrote? Nope... He used his big Whitewashing Decorators brush and slapped it over an entire religion... like many uninformed people do.

I know a Bunch of Muslims and guess what they think ISIS are complete Tossbags. And ironically would deal much swifter justice than we would if they found one in the community.

You could say the same about Right wing Fundamentalists in the USA ( who really LIKE murdering people ) ... Does Little old 90 year old Ma Baker from some Christian church in Wisconsin deserve to associated with them?

In the UK during 60-80s 3700 people died due to IRA terrorists - Did we kick out all Irish and Ban them? Nope we understood it was a small bunch of M'f'kers.

Fear is the key and the American people have given into it. People are actually sitting in Idaho thinking that 'Bad People' will come for them.

Excellent post.

Being overcautious is better than not being cautious enough.
You beat terrorists by killing terrorists, not my torturing your own citizens under the guise of safety. Every new flight regulation is a win for terrorists. Every bomb dropped on a suspected terrorist hide out is a win for the West.

Loving all these stupid comments hating on President Trump, as if he's to blame for terrorism, or is puppeteering the DHS. The Euros in here decrying the right to own firearms in the US as a security concern is downright laughable.

Not to blame just the fear and hate he's generated in people whilst blindsiding people with Tax reforms to Help his family and Billionaire buddies.

The point about Firearms is he's now made it EASIER for people to buy guns. Even actual mentally sick people...

And The NRA bang on about The Right to Bear Arms and the 2nd Amendment which was written in 1789 when weapons were single shot minute to reload Muskets and Pitchforks. And then wonder why Mass shooting occur with Assault Rifles.

And what's funny is you are being played by the NRA and the Gun Lobbyists / Companies like a Fiddle.

That's why in the EU we laugh at certain Americans attitudes to Guns.

There is actually an easy solution to this.. sell as many guns as you want - Severely restrict Ammo sales.

Or Bring back the Musket.

The real problem is not the laptop, because I can travel with a burner laptop, but cameras and lenses. If we have to check them in, we had better pack them in several layers of bubble wrap. I might not bring my full equipment, just lighter, less expensive stuff.

Have you heard about books?

First, believe it or not, books do not get my work done. No book is going to write my research article, or the slides I need for my talks. No book is going to write the programs I need to write. From other replies, I seem not to be alone in that case.

Second, if we just follow your logic, we will just wait a year or two before some report emerges, that someone may know how to hide an explosive device in a book. And then, what will you say ? "Just bring playing cards" ?

Here is the problem with that argument about weapons only needing to be single shot. The entire reason we have the 2nd Amendment is so that we can protect ourselves against a corrupt government, so the reality is that we need to be able to have the guns and ammo that are equal to or greater than what the government has, at least to a point, so that we can protect ourselves.

4 more years of this idiocracy. This administration is a complete joke. Can't believe Americans elected Trump. Sad.

I can assure you that this idiocracy started long before the current administration or the last administration for that matter.

If you were looking for a starting point, I think I would use the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 which the U.S. used as justification to enter the war in Europe.

If they do this, and the size restriction of the devices allowed on the plane is defined, who will build that device first?

If it were Samsung and it exploded in flight, that would be the ultimate irony.
[doublepost=1494522220][/doublepost]Also, the world didn't seem to mind us running into our neighbors yard and putting out their fires not once, but twice.

Nice how things change and even 20/20 hindsight doesn't give some the intelligence to see that history WILL repeat itself without diligence.

But hey, what can I expect? Uneducated people the world over don't care what's going on outside their own country until some crazy fascist invades and is sipping coffee along their equivalent of the Champs-Élysées.

The US did a very poor job in regards to the IRA which was and still is a terrorist group. The IRA received huge financial support from citizens in the United States. In a similar vain, Hamas with its track record of targetting and killing civilians, including many of their fellow arabs does active fund raising in the United States.
You are correct in your sentiments that there are a large number of right-wing individuals and groups that are advocating (and preaching under the guise of religion) that violent acts be committed in the United States. And yes violent acts have occurred, some quit recently.

Not such a keen insight to only focus on bombs. What short memories Americans have. Let's see, the 9/11 attackers who didn't have any bombs or explosives, but used other weapons to kill thousands of Americans, let's not worry about stopping similar attackers so a minority of travelers won't have to put up with the RUMORED inconvenience of a having to do without a laptop for a few hours????

Honestly, no one's taking over another plane with knives, they even give us knives with our dinners again (real metal ones although not very long or sharp). The reinforced cockpit doors work fine. Passenger awareness of the fact a flight won't just be diverted to Cuba but instead crashed into a building won't allow that again. No more peaceful cooperation. TSA does not work. They routinely let dangerous items through when tested. They have an enormous cost both directly and in the time loss to all of us. TSA is designed around a 16 year old attack (leveraging an airliner into a large area weapon), it's nearly pointless today.

The threat has changed. It's now to passengers directly and an industry and economy indirectly (the nature of terrorism). I would much rather we provide more air marshals to help if someone brings a small weapon aboard (or for, you know, fights breaking out on planes between ordinary citizens) and bomb sniffing dogs to help prevent someone taking a plane down mid-flight. I say this as someone with a much higher than average chance of being affected by these things as I'm a regular flyer for both business and pleasure. I have no fear of removing TSA and increasing bomb detection and air marshals.

Actually, you cannot beat terrorists to the point there is no terrorism. Terrorism has been with us for ages and it will continue to do so because there will always be extremists who believe that violence is justified, even if it means costing them their life.

you are correct that there will always be terrorists. Many thugs join terrorist groups for the opportunity to commit violence because they like it and receive benefit from it. To many of them, they don't even care about the 'cause'.
I was listening to NPR about the Farc dissidents that continue to attack and terrorize the innocent. I recall reading about IRA thugs switching to drug dealing after peace treaties were signed.

This is definitely to allow the US government and associated interests to confiscate and snoop international business laptops.

What were they supposed to do, ban trucks? In any city, someone can easily kill hundreds.
If they were more careful with who they let into their country, the person who did this may not have been there to do it. Don't blame the truck, blame the person.

The thing is that 16 years ago it was impossible to put a bomb in a laptop or camera, and still make it turn on. This has changed. Laptops are now 95% battery and 5% circuit board. You can take 90% of the battery out, and it will still turn on and function 100% perfectly, and the rest can be filled with explosives. They just don't know how to deal with it.

Traveling is becoming a nightmare now. And it's even worse for businessmen, because most tourists can survive with just a phone for a few days, or not travel at all. It'll hurt the economy and the tourist industry.

Technically we could make tablets with no batteries so thin that it's impossible to hide any explosives there, and they could be powered by USB from the seat. But the paranoia is just getting worse and worse.

If you are talking about the attack in London, you may want to know that the perpetrator was a UK citizen, born in the UK:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Westminster_attack#Attacker

So, at which point should him not have been let into the country ? On the day of his birth ?

A little bit of research shows that many of the people who committed terrorists acts in Europe were essentially lame thugs.

Look the guy up. He was a legitimate citizen for a long time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_Lahouaiej-Bouhlel Honestly, the safest they can be right now is if they do something horrible like exile or imprison (like Japanese-Americans in WWII) all Muslims, but I would never support that or anything similar.
