Hong Kong securities analyst Dong Yu Choo has revealed that
the iPhone 8 will feature Apple's iPencil for taking notes 20 times
faster than typing. Innovation no one else can do.

A DigiTimes rumor shared this morning pointed towards the possibility of a future 5.8-inch display in an iPhone, a significant size increase over the existing 5.5-inch display of the iPhone 6s Plus.

Rumor sites have expressed some skepticism over the idea of a 5.8-inch iPhone, but when looking at Apple's rumored work on flexible OLED displays and patents the company has filed, there is at least one plausible explanation for a 5.8-inch display -- it wraps around the sides of the device.

DisplayMate's Ray Soneira speculates that Apple could be planning to implement "folded edge side screens" on a future iOS device using a flexible OLED display. Such a display would fully eliminate side bezels on the iPhone and would also perhaps implement special buttons or gestures that could be used to control functions on the iPhone using the sides of the device.

Samsung offers phones that have a distinctly curved display with a side bar and its most recent device in that vein is the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The S7 Edge curves downward at one side, providing users with a toolbar of apps. Soneira believes Apple's implementation wouldn't mimic Samsung's, perhaps using square sides as outlined in a 2011 patent.

The patent outlines an edge display that's an extension of the main front display, offering virtual buttons, virtual switches, or informational displays that supplement the main display. It consists of a touch-sensitive layer underneath a flexible display layer and in the patent, virtual side buttons have purposes like adjusting volume, or snapping a photo.

In a second patent, Apple has outlined multiple possible shapes for an iPhone that would have a wraparound display, ranging from squared off to cylindrical, suggesting there are many possible directions Apple could go in should it decide to implement wraparound features like these.

Multiple rumors have suggested Apple is working on flexible OLED displays for future devices, with the goal of debuting the first OLED iPhones in 2017 or 2018. In addition to enabling features like dramatic curves, flexible OLED display panels have other benefits, as outlined by Soneira in a recent display shootout covering the Galaxy S7. OLED displays are thinner, lighter, offer better viewing angles, and have the potential to be used with a much smaller bezel.

OLED displays also offer better color accuracy, image contrast, and screen uniformity, and Soneira believes in the near future, OLED products will be foldable and flexible for applications described in Apple's patents.Apple's patents are not typically a useful way to predict the features we'll see in future products, but they do offer a look at the technologies and ideas Apple is exploring. Combined with the rumors that Apple has an intense interest in developing a flexible OLED display for future iOS devices, we can speculate that Apple is at least considering wraparound displays as a future iPhone feature, and today's 5.8-inch iPhone rumor is perhaps one more clue hinting at Apple's OLED plans.

According to Ray Soneira, side screens would be an ideal way for Apple to continue to iterate on future iPhones. "If Apple wants to be leading display innovation with a new OLED iPhone the side screens would really be the best way to do so," he said.

If true I guess it would be the size of the Note 5, which is a great size for a larger phone. As long as the footprint is as small as the Note 5 and not preposterously humongous like the 6 series, then it could be a great device and offer a far better pen experience than the s-pen. And maybe that's what it's about, to have an iPhone to bring the iPad Pro capabilities to.

So - wrap around screens are VERY sexy looking.

They are? Yuck!

A larger screen size in a much smaller form factor.

Bingo... you probably figured out the 'why'... spec-wars. Wrap around so you can include some useless space in the 'screen size' figure.

I like how many of these comments are condemning the idea... but when (if) Apple releases, they will overwhelmingly likely praise it and go out and buy one.

No friggin' chance. And, if so, I'll officially say Apple's finished. What I'll absolutely NOT be doing is buying one.

Square-sided wrap around display could be a nice thing ... Could be even greater if the screen has small bulges at the volume buttons locations ...

Or, they could just have - I don't know - BUTTONS! (roll-eyes)

I predict a screen and camera on each side with the opposite side's camera providing the wallpaper. The transparent phone illusion.

Apple's jump the shark moment, for sure! Then again, I do remember watching them demo the Apple Watch heart drawing thingy... Hmm.

The iPhone 6 display is slightly curved on the sides...

As someone already said: that's the 'case' essentially, even though made out of glass, not the actual display. It makes sense given the general design of the 6 and 6s, but IMO, they don't look nearly as nice anymore as the 5s did. IMO, that was, so far, the pinnacle of ID for the iPhone line. That looked classy and expensive.... now it looks cheap.

As for the curved display, just like the curved TV, summary: GIMMICK!

truly hoping all this rumors are unconfirmed

Just get the S7 Edge, faster, wireless charging, micro SD storage, better battery life. Why wait on a ripoff?
Faster ? No way.
Micro SD storage ? Who cares ?
Better battery life ? Let see in one year...

and .... Android

Are they really running out of ideas?
actually not, but those "analyst" probably are....

Not a big fan of wraparound display. Another weak point in the structure for cracks. Also, don't see the point in how it could be useful.
Hope apple don't copies Samsung and instead, come up some innovative solution.
Are you sure about that? Curves are often stronger than straight lines.
[doublepost=1457502823][/doublepost]
They did file for the patent in 2013. Samsung didn't release a product with one until 2015 so umm yeah.
Lemme get this straight. Apple filed for a patent and Samsung release a product with those features and we’re not seeing a story about a court case here?
[doublepost=1457502858][/doublepost]
Ugh, why? Samsung only did that because they ran out of things to add.
That’s the best you can come up with - seriously?

Don't worry, if Apple does it they will be magical.
If Apple does this it will be really usable as usual ...

IF.

Square-sided wrap around display could be a nice thing since it will totally eliminate the bezel around the screen. There's no other way to do it.

Even if the screen sides aren't used except for volume buttons/gestures, it still will be a nice thing. Could be even greater if the screen has small bulges at the volume buttons locations, so you can easily locate it.

And maybe add some more similar bulged programmable buttons on the edge. Photo and video camera modes, mute switch, stock apps/settings from control center...

iphone-6-concept-wraparound-display-2.jpg

what about shock protection on a similar device ?
what about the use of a cover ?

So is 3D Touch.

actually NOT.
3D Touch is truly improving using experience, in some way. Quick actions on apps are my favorite example.

You're kidding, right?

The iPhone 6 display is slightly curved on the sides, which allow a nice experience when swiping back within sections in apps. If anything, a curved display would work better on iPhone than on a Galaxy because iOS already has some things that would take advantage of it and, additionally, Apple can take advantage of it quickly with software updates.

But you'll say that the slightly curved iPhone 6 display isn't a gimmick, right? Because it's made by Apple?

apple-iphone-6_large.png

oh my .... you are kidding, right ?
That's not the display. That's the glass OUTSIDE of the screen curved for ergonomical reasons....

Believe me, I have thought of that. But the issue is, it is a Samsung product and regardless of the good look, I will never get the experience I get with Apple's iPhone. I always end up selling Galaxy phones on eBay few months after I get them because of troubles with them.

It would be a blatant copy of Samsung but it can't help because more we see of late, resembles Sammy....

In my list of desires for my next phone a wrap around or even a display on the side are about 1,000 down from the top. Having spent a few hours with a Galaxy Edge, I became convinced that this is nothing more than a marketing gimick. Useless to most people but hey, with one you can go and shout, 'Hey look at my shiny-shiny' (Pos).

So - wrap around screens are VERY sexy looking. However when I had to decide between the Note 5 and the S6 Edge - I chose the Note. First - the S6 Edge didn't feel right in my hand because the curve was counter-intuitive to what I was used to. Also - I felt that a stylus and features of the Note outweighed the usefulness of some tickers/side display features. But it does make for a slick looking phone.
Exactly for the same reasons I went for Note 5 Duos instead of Edge Plus Duos.....

Curved/wraparound displays are a gimmick and have no place in an Apple product.

NFC payment sucks
Who wants a larger display?
Water proof? what a gimmick
Zoe Capture, who wants that (You know it as live photos)...

I can't see Apple releasing curved glass for the 7S in 2017 as that would differentiate it too much from the 7. The S models are about enhancements and not design changes

It isn't that NFC sucks, just that it's kind of old-hat for most of the rest of the world (besides the USA). But, until we can actually leave our wallets behind (if that will ever happen) it's just as easy to wave a card as a phone. But, maybe I missed the point on that one. Did someone say NFC was bad or a gimmick? I'd just say it's something I could take or leave when I get my iPhone.

Larger displays also don't suck. For some people they are a great thing. They are a UI tradeoff (which, BTW, was Apple's original point... btw, let me know if you don't get the Apple Pencil thing as well, and I'll explain), but for many, worth it (kind of like iPad minis as well). Especially if your mobile device is your primary (or only!) computing device, you want screen real-estate more than pocket-ability, one-handed efficiency, or phone-sized-phone-ness. (BTW, I'm hoping the rumored 4" is good so I can buy one.... *I* don't want the larger screen.)

Why would waterproof be a gimmick? That said, I think water-resistant is probably more realistic and what really counts. Full water-proof could be seen as a bit gimmicky, as most phone users aren't going to head out snorkeling with their phones any time soon. (And, I'll not bring up the Sony fiasco! Let's just say it's easier said than done, and few need it/want it that much. Is that gimmick?)

Live photos, I suppose is kinda cute now and then, but I think that falls pretty squarely in the gimmick category. It's maybe slightly more useful than drawing hearts on Apple Watch screens and such, IMO. But, again, I suppose there are a few people who really love it.

Because the iPhone already has too many gimmicks? Like 3D touch? Or Live Photos? lol

Honestly, I'm not sure about the other 6s users, but I personally use it a lot. Especially to launch the app switcher by applying pressure to the left side of the screen. It helps me lessen the usage of the home button without having to turn on the STUPID assistive touch function.
