What if Apple made a $200 phone made out of plastic? iPhone Air?? It would feel light like air. The iPhone 14 Pro is a bit too heavy too!
I'm starting to think that the clashes in objectives of annual rear camera improvements vs. cell phone form factor are feeding this problem(?). A better camera basically needs more depth (thicker phone) and bigger lenses to let more light in (growing bump and multiple lenses). I wonder how much the cost of the rear cameras are vs. total cost of iPhone? It seems much innovation is poured into those and that may be a LOT of what drives up the costs of iPhone.
I wonder if there would be a market for an iPhone without the rear cameras at all. Conceptually, that would be a MUCH cheaper, fully functional iPhone that still has the front-facing camera for FaceTime, etc. Think about old iPod Touch or those earlier iPhones with good (enough but much less onerous) cameras.
Those seeking exceptional photography could overcome all of the limitations of trying to cram a great camera into a tiny, thin package and return to buying dedicated cameras as a
separate device. Because that option doesn't have design limitations (like thin & light), they can maximize photography physics.
There is no way to EVER get the best quality of dedicated cameras built into a thin slab phone form factor. Yes, it's quite convenient to have both in one but maybe there is a market to split them back out again. Personally, I prefer to take photos with an actual camera myself. Right tool for the job! Yes, I still take some photos with the camera that is with me... but when I know I'm going to be taking more important photos, I bring the camera (too).
This is not saying that ALL iPhones should go this way. But what if ONE iPhone jettisoned and/or retro'ed the camera to get back to those much lower priced iPhones we used to enthusiastically buy? That would still deliver all apps and all of the "iPhone" benefits EXCEPT the very best iPhone camera packs. Some could then take their pictures with the more modest camera, (awkwardly with the) front facing camera and/or with a dedicated and much more capable, dedicated camera.
Just a "think different" idea vs. the apparent future where phones will have to keep expanding as they try to deliver ever-better camera functionality. Physics being physics, there is only one way to keep making meaningful progress in that part of things.
Or maybe Apple should take a crack at creating a great camera that also has touch-screen phone functions? Once a phone is too big for even "pants with bigger pockets" and "two-handed use", maybe hanging the camera around our neck/shoulders like photographers have always done... and that new device also being able to cover phone & text (& app) functions becomes a new possibility?
