The thing that gets me with describing the "all-in-one" lightning connector situation here is that it can only do one thing at a time in normal use. Charge and use wired headphones? nope

Source for this claim? Because I can think of half a dozen simple ways right now ...

People use their phone for much more than simply listening to music. They also use their phone for more than just personal needs. Try going to a construction site and setting up a speaker phone so everyone can hear what the design changes are going to be. A single speaker even on max has a hard time overcoming even just wind nose.

I will guarantee adding a second speaker, even comperbale to the existing speaker (which is unlikely due to space) will not change anything in that scenario.

The additional screenshots in the original nowhereelse.fr article clearly show that the extra holes for the "second speaker" don't go through the case. They are purely ornamental for symmetry. Only a single mic hole actually goes clear through the case. This clearly indicates there is no second speaker.

Well that's a blessing and a curse if true. On the one hand, it makes sense that there's no second speaker. On the other, sad that Apple would create crud collectors out of some warped sense of aesthetic symmetry, when there's an asymmetrical camera budging out of the back, not to mention symmetrical front sensors, and the bottom has always been asymmetrical with the headphone jack. It's purely ornamental, and that's not been a typical trait of Apple's in the past ... Form usually follows function.

OTOH -- Why are there dimples on the inside of the case? Inductive charging? Smart connector? Or is it just a fake?

Note there's also a suspicious divot on the bottom center near where the smart connector has been shown in previous links.

boring boring boring. i had huge expectations for this phone.

What's boring is reading all the comments from people who are easily sold on a phone purely because it has a new design. It's what's inside the phone that counts and the software, in this case iOS 10, and how the two work together.

If you take off the casing of every iPhone to date and set aside the increase in screen size over the years you'll see that every generation has been an "incremental" upgrade over the previous model. Not that much changes dramatically in tech over the course of a year.

The sooner people stop moaning about this being an incremental or boring upgrade, the better. I swear that if Apple kept the exact same components as the 6S but changed the external design of the phone people would go mad for it.

They're going to sound like **** anyway; I don't really see the point in eliminating the headphone jack in favour of a second speaker.

Points:
  • "thinner"
  • Lightning licensing profits
  • Lightning retail profits
  • Perhaps/probably closing the "analog hole"
If you mean you don't see the point for us consumers, I'm with you on that.

Perhaps if we all gained access to the (Dr. Henry "Hank") Pym particles so there could be some tangible separation between those speakers? ;)

But then talk about needing pants with bigger pockets.

That dual lens camera cutout... Kill it with fire. SO terrible. If that makes it to production, it is officially the ugliest feature to ever be on an iPhone. It's just atrocious.

Wait until they roll out the quad camera.;)

if i wanted function over form i'd get an android. Apple is suppose to toe the line between function and form, usually a nod to form. But clear as day that Ive is being held back or non-involved.

Diving up the 5.5 and 4.7 with camera functions now? The butter of the iphone? eeeeekkkkkkk. At least the S7 is absolutely gorgeous. Iphone has become uninspiring.

Im obviously in the doom camp, but i dont see Apple as cream of the crop in 10 years. It will be google vs microsoft.

Note the dimples on the inside of the case.

Why do that if the outside is merely an aesthetic effort to retain symmetry?

Could this be a new inductive charging method?

It reminds me an awfully lot of the Watch diagnostic port.

I agree with you, in theory. Unfortunately, we haven't heard anything exciting about what's inside the phone, either. I'm sure the A10 will be super awesome and all that... But the A9 is already stupid-fast, so who really cares. I'm sure the new camera will be the most amazing camera ever on a phone... But the current camera is already pretty darn amazing, so again, yawn. Other than camera and A10, what has been leaked? Usually, even the s models have at least one new "killer feature" as a selling point (Siri, Touch ID, 3D Touch). This time, we may not even see that.

And iOS 10 is itself a monumental snooze-fest. Half that damn keynote was explaining how you'll be able to send more colorful iMessages for god's sake. Not a single new killer feature there either.

I'm sure the iPhone 7 running iOS 10 will be the best iPhone experience ever. But as of now, it seems like the most incremental update ever, a year after another incredibly incremental update.

Another lame iPhone with the removal of items a lot of people will be disgruntled about, but yet they will sell like hotcakes due to people "having to have the latest and greatest".

Except more and more the (terrible) trend seems to be to use ipads/iphones with audio in restaurants and bars. Particularly parents giving these to children to occupy them in those locations. I fear the disappearance of the 3.5 mm headphone jack will exacerbate this noise pollution.
Interesting. Personally I haven't experienced this or seen the trend of poor manners and poor public etiquette regarding device use. Or maybe I'm just not getting outdoors enough! :D

If so, that would represent a dramatic departure from Jony Ive's design philosophy. There should be no no non-functional ornaments other than the Apple logo.

Good find! This is pretty stupid, it is like they don't want this phone to sell (and it will, like hot-cakes).
Unfortunately, the 4.7" is also thinner than the 5.5" model which requires a less deep (and thus inferior) camera module.

Have you seen actual real cameras? They all have a protruding lens.
Ummm, just because something has been a certain form in the past doesn't mean it needs to mimic it in the future. We wouldn't have the iPhone today if Apple followed that philosophy -- "Have you seen actual real cell phones? They all have real keyboards."

Protruding camera lens is a design disgrace! Eliminate the protruding camera lens -- NOW!

iPhone sized stereo speakers? :) I would be much happier if they kept the standard audio-jack in, so people could still connect their quality ear/headphones to get some decent sound.

I know! I'm hoping it will take atrociously great pictures, even in low light. DSLR-quality photos! (Better, because I'm not lugging a DSLR to most places I take pictures.) That will be enough to make me love it.

Except Apple did exactly this with the original iPhone. It actually had multiple rows of holes on either side of the dock connector, of which one side was just a microphone.

Intersting theory, but it still doesn't explain why those holes would be left undrilled. Any sort of charging will require electrical isolation from the metal of the case.

So apple went from "4inches is the best" to buy the 5.5 inch it has the best features?
Why the heck is apple making the Plus model the best one, the only difference should be the screen size and battery.

Agreed 100%. All iphones carry a premium price, so depriving one size of features that another has is just another way of Apple nickle and diming customers ... and very possibly, ultimately alienating them.

Bose finally released wireless sport headphones. This is something they said they would never do b/c the battery life and sound quality wasn't there. I guess they are expecting phone manufactures to start dropping headphone jacks in the near future. Or they are just moving with the industry....

Those saying they had huge expectations for this iPhone clearly haven't been following rumors.

True. Apple has been sitting around so long with their thumbs up their ...es all across their products lines collectively for much longer than I can ever remember.
I'm not asking for groundbreaking innovation either, just more timely feature upgrades (wireless charging iphone where are you?) and more timely processor upgrades (skylake macbook pros where are you?)

Dude just get a mirrorless camera. Unless you have a Canon 5D mark iii and are a wedding photographer, there's no reason to lug around a DSLR. That's old school.
