That back is just ugly. It should be integrated flat into the glass. Invisble.

Thing is, the moment you make it "thinner by making it part of the glass, you then come the issues of "What happens what you need it replaced?" Suddenly your not talking replacing a component, your talking of replacing the entire glass.

Forgive me, but that doesn't sound like simple physics. It sounds like you postulating. Admittedly, I am out of my depth when discussing photography, especially computational photography. But even my cursory googling of computational photography throws doubt on your theory. In fact there are so many elements involved, it's a bit overwhelming, but consistently, none of that info supports your assertions. I'm not casting aspersions, I'm genuinely curious. I'd like to know some actual facts... so that I can steal them at a later point in time and claim them as my own.:D Most of what I've seen thus far seem to be based on IFTTT logic. As in, this is what I think because of this, then that must also be true.

With all these companies including all these camera's in all these different configurations... let's just say I have doubts that Huawei stumbled upon a superior solution with the squircle config.

I’m sorry, which fact that I stated do you doubt? It is indeed simple physics (optics). You haven’t said which thing I said that you disagreed with. While my specialty isn’t optics, I do have multiple engineering degrees with a specialization in physics, so I’m not making this stuff up.

iPhone XSS

Yeah I'm thinking the extra 'S' stands for 'Sucks' ?

Seriously though, I cant believe how they could settle for this ugly design. First the notch compromise now this.
The design team has really dropped the ball and let the interns oversee the product design.

I have an engineering degree as well. So your education is not in question. Nor is it relevant. What is relevant is the connections you're making without factual back up. You're trying to conflate the physics of optics and computational photography as if what's applicable to one is applicable to both. From your original quote:
A triangle is better from a computational photography perspective, as each pair of lenses is as close together as possible, reducing problems due to perspective.
That quote didn't ring true when I first read it and the more I research, the less accurate your quote becomes. So you ask what have you said that I disagree with? It's your triangle theory as it relates to computation photography. One of the keys of computational photography is digital image capture and processing that uses computation instead of optical processes. It's one of the reasons Google, Apple, and others can do it with lenses in pretty much any config... even a single lens. As I stated in my earlier quote, there are so many dimensions to the field that I freely admit to being out of my depth. But I know enough now to say your triangle theory isn't right as it relates to the computational photography. It may be right regarding the physics of optics, but not what we're discussing. Anyway, thanks for taking the time. It lead me to do more research about the topic. I'm still a neophyte regarding the subject, but it is an interesting one. Again, thanks for the convo.

The upcoming smartphone is said to feature a "new and unique" rear panel that is made from a single piece of glass that includes the camera bump, a design that could minimize the obtrusiveness of the large rear camera.

Nah. What would minimize the obtrusiveness of the camera is not having a freaking bump in the first place.

I don’t know what the industrial-design solution is, but it isn’t the material or color or any other purely aesthetic issue I have with the back of this phone - it’s the fact that I either have to spring for a case or use my camera lens as one of the legs of a tripod. Asinine.

Why do you still get one? You are on XS what could possibly new phone give you?

Anyway, the camera setup either be super amazing or I have no clue why Apple is going downhill like this.

Because I'm on the Apple yearly replacement program. I always get a new phone. This way I never have to be one of those people who are always trying to decide if they want to upgrade this year or wait. I just always get the new one. Stress free living. :)

Waiting for the 20 more threads on this until we decide the render is real.

I’m just annoyed that the camera is getting all the focus.

What material is the outside band going to be ... steel again or aluminum or magnesium?

Why nothing about cpu performance or any increases in ram and it’s speed therein?

Lightning port will it get much faster data speeds? Faster charging? More data protocols?

Screen and 3D Touch will it remain?

Ugh, I was really hoping for iPad Pro-like redesign

You and me both along with many others. 2019 iPad Pro design is just so damn clean and fresh!

Apple has decided to keep the same round design and not squared for no reason , I’m not buying it and hopefully they sells go to **** so they finally learn the lesson

3D renders are just fancy looking illustrations based on guesses. They look so real though that people may think that that's what it'll look like. But it won't. Renders based on fantasy are deceptive
So true. We'll just have to wait for the day before the announcement when an image of the actual phone is leaked while going through rehearsals for the presentation!

Every render just reinforces my thoughts on jumping over to Samsung... I'll get out of this Apple ecosystem soon enough.

Samsung really knows their stuff! The folding phone is looking great. As long as airports aren’t banning their devices for exploding, again, I guess it’s all good. :p

Everyone is going to call this ugly and buy it anyway. Just like you did with the iPhone 5's ugly glass panels, the iPhone 6's ugly antenna lines, and the iPhone X's ugly notch.

nope am not buying - only have the jet black 7 which is a beauty.
will not buy anything from apple again which is not totally convincing - they need to be punished as hard as possible. next notebook is a suface book which is way superior by any means to a macbook pro - which has become a piece of crap!

you are refering to products which are not in the market to buy!
would be like referring to your high school grades and maybe deducting you are an inferior person!

OK, not beautiful but...
Iphone 4 camera (or rather the protective window over the les system) was in level with the back. Mine ended up very scratched which showed up in pictures. My iPhone 6 lens i still starch free. Perhaps the bump works as a protective mechanism for the lens/window when placing the phone on tables due to the angle it creates? Perhaps the iPhone 6 window is of another material which may explain its resistance but I doubt it.

I rather take the bump, get better optics and scratch free images than a beautiful, but clumsy phone with camera that is levelled with the back plate.

They don’t?

I must have been hallucinating then while reading/watching all the positive reviews of the Samsung Fold. That thing is basically a brick when closed, and folks are seemingly fine with it.

A 1mm increase in thickness to make the camera flush isn’t a lot.
“Whatabout the Samsung Fold” doesn’t address any of the points I made in my post. Would you like to try again?

1) There are already complaints about the XR being too heavy, too big, too thick, bulky, etc. including complaints Apple is trying to make it less appealing in order to “force” customers to buy the significantly higher-priced XS (by driving them away from the XR). Actually forget the 8.3mm XR; people complain about the 7.7mm XS/XS Max being too big/heavy! (Of course that was before the S10 was released—at 7.8mm.)

The XS changed to eliminate the camera bump would be even thicker at 8.9mm than the XR. Do you think that’s what a majority of XS/XS Max buyer’s want? An iPhone XS that’s thicker than the XR?

2) Apple thinks its customers would like an XS at 7.7mm thickness, and that the battery life is fine with the current battery size. Wouldn’t Apple making a thicker/heavier iPhone XS and XS Max so they could get rid of the camera bump be the very definition of putting form over function?

3) Apple’s ok with the bump since it allows them to use higher quality optics. Sure, no doubt they could get rid of the bump by using a less complicated lens arrangement, but again that would be putting form over function, right?

4) Isn’t the camera bump not all that different from the notch... an acceptable trade off for FaceID, smaller bezels and a display that goes out to all four corners? With Ive, function again trumps form. Obviously he’d rather not have any notch at all, but there are always trade offs between engineering realities and optimal design. He’d rather have the extra display area from the ears rather than replacing the ears with non-functional bezel.

If they use the cluster of three close lenses for technical reasons then its a good decision. eg for more light intake, more detail, etc.

RE: "With the exception of the camera design, no other design or display changes are expected."

I think the XR will be bumped-up from "pseudo" 3 GB to "pseudo" 4 GB.

For comparison purposes, the 7+ is a "true" 3 GB device !

Plus, AAPL better fix the Perf Controller bug(s) in the A12, OR ... major Recall at some point !!!

They still need to deal with the existing A12 units that have the bug(s).

Pseudo? What are you referring to regarding the RAM?
