This is going to be the ugliest iPhone ever made. Too many cameras going on phones lately. It’s a smartphone. If you want a super duper camera, buy a camera. This is getting ridiculous.

Form follows function. And the battery isn’t lacking.

Oh, really? The only way to survive a full work day with the phone these days is to drag a 27000mAh battery around with me. I bought a smaller one earlier but it ran out of juice way too fast. Sure, that one has more than enough reserve to charge my Macbook, too, but anything smaller than that and it wasn't enough even for the phone. Having to charge that damned thing 3-4 times a day is getting tiresome. According to ScreenTime I spend around 7-8h using the phone on a daily basis. It's a tool. I work with it.

My wife uses her iPhone 8 a lot less than I do and she runs out of battery only once every day. But even that one forced charge during the day is a bit too much. Should be enough to charge it to full every night. But that's the reason why I don't even consider the other new toy products, like airpods, watch etc. I've got enough useless toys with way too small batteries already.

Too bad they just make ToiPhones for ToiBois.

You can have it. I’m happy with my iPhone with one camera that works just fine.

Ahhhh. I vote for a bit thinker phone with no bump. Not sure why this drives me crazy since I have a case at all times but just knowing it. I guess does it for me.
poor design because it promotes scratching (on the bump) where the lens is.

So while you're at it, bevel the edges. Speaking of improvements, have the alerts banner only take up 2/3-3/4 the screen width left justified so some top edge actions can be done on a timely bases like return to phone or maps for example. No more waiting for messages to time out!

Sure, but it's about the balance of quality vs. convenience. That's how 35mm film started in the first place, as it was "good enough" for most people who didn't want to lug around medium or large format cameras. I don't think many medium format digital users complain about DSLR progress, despite it not equalling medium format digital.

Phone tech has reached a plateau, for the most part, so camera improvements make sense.

Just like car manufacturers, smartphone manufacturers have to introduce new features every year, as well as at least tweak the physical design somewhat. Otherwise there is no reason for the consumer to upgrade to the newer model - which would be a nightmare for the manufacturer!

Right now, photography (stills and video) are areas where noticeable improvements can be introduced annually, so the manufacturers are all over it.

And of course the compliant media spend so much of their reviews pixel peeping photos from these devices to support the "need" to upgrade. When was the last time you saw a review that went into great detail about core competency such as call quality?

Every render just reinforces my thoughts on jumping over to Samsung... I'll get out of this Apple ecosystem soon enough.

Why wait and prolong your agony? You know Apple isn’t ever going to make what you want.

Switch now and you’ll be further along, happier, and much better off. Courage going forward.

Well, that might be the case with grades in the states.
But if you could choose between the Mercedes A - Class or S-Class? What would be the superior model? Just saying..
I don’t follow Mercedes, but intuitively I’d say A class (based on your question that’s obviously wrong). If you asked me A class vs B class, I’d choose A class.

I suppose it’s a regional thing. In the US, Grade A components are better than B-stock. An A-list celebrity is much better than being on the D-list.

But really all that is beside the point. OP was of the opinion Apple named the 6.1” LCD iPhone to be “XR” so customers would know it was not as good as “XS”. As I mentioned in my original reply, R coming first before S was not Apple’s reasoning for their model naming.

Geez. Just make the phone a tiny bit thicker and lose the bump. Added bonus: more room for battery!

But then there'd be a hole when you put it in your $50 Apple case

The upcoming smartphone is said to feature a "new and unique" rear panel that is made from a single piece of glass that includes the camera bump, a design that could minimize the obtrusiveness of the large rear camera.

Translation: back glass repairs just went up in price by $100

The X and XS camera bump depth is a 1.2mm.

If the phone was as thick as the camera bump, it would only be slightly thicker than the XR.
And people already complain about how thick and heavy the XR is. Despite what some think, people really don’t want thicker/heavier phones. For Apple to do that just to get rid of the camera bump is the very definition of putting form over function.

Despite the “Ive is obsessed with thinness” meme, the iPhone has been getting thicker every year since the iPhone 6. Every single year. It’s now finally gotten to the point where people are actually saying the XR is too thick.

Apple could get rid of the bump by using a less complicated lens arrangement, but again that would be putting form over function. Apple’s ok with the bump since it allows them to use higher quality optics. A couple hundred million customers agree with them that it’s an acceptable trade off. Not much different from the notch; an acceptable trade off for FaceID/smaller bezels and a display that goes all the way out to the corners. Function trumps form.

Funny how a slightly different render makes it look not nearly as bad. Still not great but most people put their phone in a case which also helps to make the camera bump not look as bad.

They don’t?

I must have been hallucinating then while reading/watching all the positive reviews of the Samsung Fold. That thing is basically a brick when closed, and folks are seemingly fine with it.

A 1mm increase in thickness to make the camera flush isn’t a lot.

You do realize that no phone is going to give you the 3 to 4 times more battery life you need, nor the twice as long run time your wife needs, right? Even the awesome Samsung Galaxy 10 series... but I suppose you know that.

Batteries are heavy, and they take up a lot of space. Very few people would want a phone as thick and heavy as it would have to be to last 3-4 times longer. Or twice as long, for that matter. Most people end the day with battery to spare, because their capacity is sufficient for most people.

But I doubt facts are anything you’re interested in, so by all means keep up the insults and the ranting if it makes you feel better.

Notch in da front, block in da back.

Weird to look at, but will wait for the actual phone to be released. So weird.
