Battery is in the front.

I don't know if anybody has noticed this, but the notch for the hinge can be seen in the bottom of the picture. That means the battery is in the front of the laptop, not the back.

coming in japan ?

I am not an english spoken person, so my english is bad.
So here is the think : I usualy buy things in a internet store in japan, and when there are some new apple products coming on they put a 10 % point on the price.
It's usally at 5 %, but now the mac book pro are at 10 % wich means that there is something new coming on.
Maybe 3 or 4 weeks, I cant tell, but that means that there is really something new coming on.
thanks and sorry for my bad english

Relocating the battery to the rear means no more toasty legs while using the MBP on the lap and lower operating temperatures (battery is closer to the vents at the rear) :)

Yay! No more sterility!

Oh I know !!! all that over a bloomin TELEPHONE

Give a rest Apple , we want computers and we want em now :D

If you think the iPhone is just a telephone, you obviously haven't used one. I think I spend more time surfing than I do talking.

Good luck to everyone who is waiting... hopefully it won't drag on til MWSF '09!

I am glad i pulled the trigger a few weeks ago cause this news definitely would have made me think about waiting... which would suck cause this MBP is sooooo sweet.

(not sure if anyone pointed this out yet, but the apple website is still advertising the 'New Macbook Pro' ... which makes me think an update is not as imminent as one might hope...)

Screen...

I haven't read through all 12 pages of this thread but if the screen is in the back of the notebook then how will the screen be attched??? I certianely wouldn't attach in the same way especially if the battery is to be removeable!!!

Sorry for the bad spelling...I'm tired and just had that thought to add!

this is the first time that i have seen the apple refurb store without any 15" mbp for sale

Looking at the image, you can tell where the screen attaches to the case. There is a notch on the bottom of the case at the bottom of the picture, where the screen and the hinge attaches. The battery is on the opposite side of this, and is therefore in the front of the laptop and not in the way of the screen.

I think your dreaming if you think you can see a notch where the hinge attaches. The image I'm looking at doesn't have a notch.

I had though that too and it seems very plausible but we will not of course not know until it is actually released!!! I keep forgetting that this is not a "complete" prototype...sadly

It's sooo hard waiting

If you view the large version of the picture from the post, on the bottom of the picture you can see that there is an opening cut out for the hinge in the aluminum case, like in the current macbook pro case. That means that that part is the back of the laptop, and the battery is in the front.

I annotated the hinge opening in the attached pdf.

update sooner maybe?

this is the first time that i have seen the apple refurb store without any 15" mbp for sale

there are no refurbished 15" mbp's on the US or Canadian apple site! i've been checking daily to see if there has been price drops (a possible indication of new models) but nothing and then now -- none available. there's a 17". there were at least 6 or 7 models of 15" listed in Canada yesterday so it seems doubtful those all sold in 24hrs. maybe there's a new problem that's being fixed OR something is about to happen... i can only hope.

ok, back to being annoyed with Rogers Wireless in Canada -- ie, no iphone for me until the price is dropped on those plans (the new $30/6gb plan does not seem like a deal since my current voice/txt/voice mail plan with rogers -- after tax and surcharges -- already costs $44/month for only 200 mins).

Regarding the release date

The last time when apple released a spruced up macbook pro around this time, was in September (16th to be exact), the last day of the present BTS promotion.

I hope you're right, but now that I think about it, wouldn't it make sense for apple to wait until Nehalem and Snow Leopard during Macworld '09, to make it a huge step-up?

I want to see macbooks!

so i should forget the new mbp and just buy the penryn now with the b2s promotion? :(

It doesn't look like that it will be smaller or thinner. Steve, thanks for user upgradeable HD! If someone could measure current macbook pro's screws, with great accuracy (screw heads are just a little bit bigger than a millimeter) then we could calculate how big it is- just measure screws and you will get approximate scale of everything else!

Anyone is up to this task?:apple:

Also to add to more rumors that new models will come soon is that macmall had big sale and I think it still continues. Personally I would be OK with current model too if someone offers brand new and at good price. I even put price points- macbook for $1k and macbook pro for $1.5K, warranty included. Lets see if prices WILL go so low, hopefully they will put something mind blowing, so prices will considerably drop.

I personally think the upgrade is impending, just read yesterday that all of the G84/G86 cards are defective that means the 8600GT is defective, obviously I wasnt suprised as the temperature of the 8600GT in the MBP has never really been normal in my opinion.

And you can clearly get the feeling about that the stock is swindling everywhere when it comes to the current components, and more and more resellers are stopping to order the 8600GT which has been replaced by the 9600GT in the most midrange up and coming laptops.

All in all new laptops is a must for Apple to even have a chance to keep its current marketshare the coming months, the competition is stiff and basically every major vendor has announced their new lineups, and I personally have always considered this current model a joke when it comes to term of value, using a budget crap card for a model which is branded PRO for two years is just pure swindlery in my opinion.

Besides that, I dont know the exact pricings for the MBP in the states, but over here in Sweden, the MBP with the same processor/memory/hdd/gpu etc etc costs twice the dell XPS 1530 with the exact same specs, so its a tad funny, you get a 2,5ghz, 4gig ram, 2x160gig, dual 8800M GTX dell xps 1730 cheaper than the midrange MBP over here.

Obviously they have to update to keep up with competition, not even offering bluray in the PRO branded products is a joke when competitors offer it in theyre budget lappies.

I feel kind of cheated, because I love the Mac OSX, and I work with programs which only function in mac so I am forced to use a overpriced mac, thats why I have been keeping off buying a new MBP, if I am gonna spend 4k $ on a MBP I'll spend it on the day the new model surfaces, because thats the only way I can somehow justify the purchase, not by much but a little atleast.

if that is actually an accurate prototype than yes, the battery would definitely be on the front of the case. nice call.

Apple has been to be working on new aluminum MacBook Pro designs that will adopt features of the current iMac and MacBook Air.

If the new MBP casing is made of aluminum -- I wonder if Apple’s thermal engineers might have worked out a plan to use an all aluminum body as a massive heat sink.

If they did, seems to me that would be nothing short of brilliant. Replacing the need for energy hungry cooling fans with a casing that serves as a heat sink is very unique!

Of course, I wouldn’t want to place that “heat sink” laptop on my lap if I still want to have kids.

Wow, I didn't notice that and I'm sure a heck of a lot of others didn't either. The person who took the picture made it look like the battery would be at the back but after looking at it closer you can clearly see where the screen would go. Bravo, this should definitely be pointed out to everyone, maybe put as an update on the main article =p.

In fact, there is no way to know if this shell is even going to stay silver or if it is later to be anodized black or some other color.
Yes there is. That picture does not show raw aluminium (aluminum for you guys over there) – it has already been anodised.

Now, I'm not saying a black version might ALSO be available, but that shell we look at is already anodised.

Using a metal casing as a heat sink is not new, nor brilliant, and certainly not unique.

why make the bottom part so ugly? i love the current bottom with the battery check light,
ram1.jpg

so they are making it look just like all the other laptops with that latch and the battery covering the back end.

HP_Notebook_dv6500t_SE_Bottom.jpg

PLEASE NOOO!! i hate that battery style

p.s why doesnt Engadget show these pics? maybe apple doesnt want them too?
